I started golfing about 7 months ago, but I’ve only teed off twice and have been to the driving range around 4 times, so I’m still very new. The video you’ll see was taken on December 8th, which was the last time I went to the range.
This swing is with a 9-iron. Right now I can only hit 6–9 irons and for some reason I really struggle with anything longer than that.
My main goal at the moment is consistent contact. I’m looking for feedback on fundamentals (grip, stance, posture, takeaway, etc.) and what I should focus on early before building bad habits.
Please feel free to be critical — I’m here to learn and improve.
Any advice or drills would be appreciated. Thanks!

Get a damn class nearly everything is wrong
Your athleticism is doing the heavy living here. You will want to get a lesson to learn the fundamentals of the swing.
honestly, it’s trash.
I wouldn’t say it’s Tom DeLonge worthy, but I also wouldn’t downvote anyone who posted Tom DeLonge
The long clubs are more technique-dependent. Most of the technique to be developed is in the hips, after you master your grip. 6 – 9 irons can survive on power but the closer you get to the green, you’ll need more technique to get your ball to go safely where it needs to be. It is easy and fun to be drunk on power, especially with your youth and athleticism. I invite you to abandon your power in pursuit of accuracy. 10 – 25% strength-only range days where you hit one target 10/25/50 times. *Feel* the swing, *understand* what the wrong club face delivery does when it is too much opened or closed. And when you learn a little bit more off the range, take that same effort to the putting green. Not 30 minutes; the *same exact effort you had on the range*.
It looks like a rookie swing for sure but I don’t think it’s that bad. Good finish, decent hip action.
I’d recommend standing a little close to the ball so you’re not hunched as much and try to rotate your hips without lifting that front foot, for starters.
You look like a baseball player lol
Don’t choke down on the club so much
You’ve got a baseball grip, not a bad start but try experimenting with an interlock grip for better control. Your left knee tends to pop forward instead of leaning in, which makes it tough to stay balanced throughout the swing.
Overall, you’re clearly athletic. Schedule a swing evaluation with a local pro & it’ll help you lock in some solid fundamentals fast.
Let’s see a swing update in a few weeks 😎
What types of instruction and coaching have you had so far? Listening to tips from a buddy, YouTube vids, or just rolling with the vibes?
Positives:
Good swing speed and range of motion, you can make contact, decent athleticism.
You’re in a spot where you know the very basics of what to do, but need to have someone teach you how to do it. Guarantee a few lessons will go miles for you.
Work on grip, posture and alignment. Try not to let that lead heal come up like that.
Don’t lift that front heel. While Bryson and some old timers do it, and it can feel natural and you can generate more power doing it, it’ll usually reduce consistency which is why very few pro players still do it or they only do it with driver. Stand slightly taller with grip less choked down.
Posture grip alignment and extension stand out
Don’t skip leg day
Honestly its nowhere near as bad as some people have said. The swing itself is mostly okay, the issues are in the parts before the swinging happens. Once you fix your grip and setup you should re evaluate.
Grip first. Then how you address the address the ball. Then takeaway. Then back swing. Prolly wanna address the top of the swing. Oh yeah then look into downswing and how it affects impact. Gotta get that right. Then how you release and close the swing out.
Check the swing plane, the angles of impact, routine, tempo, stiff vs loose, flippy or not, feet placement, alignment, hips…
You know just a couple things.
You will get lessons and see some amazing dividends, a lot is wrong but once you get it right I think you have a lot working for you, best of luck.
There’s a lot of good stuff going on here that more experienced players struggle with—lots of athleticism. The area of need is basic fundamentals like grip, stance, etc. take some lessons and you’ll improve quickly.
Your hips are WAY too flexed at address and you predictably goat hump your way toward the ball throughout the entire swing.
Why you in a power crouch? Go look at how Max Homa addresses the ball.
