Brackenwood Golf Course in Bebington closed in 2022, and there has been a long ongoing battle to reopen it since.

It was closed in March 2022 by Wirral Council as part of sweeping budget cuts that year, as well as an “oversupply” of golf courses in Wirral.

An original bid was knocked back after a firm supporting the course’s golf club pulled out but plans still moved forward in 2024.

On Wednesday (December 17) councillors decided at a policy and resources committee that the course would reopen as a commercial venture.

Elected members unanimously approved transferring Brackenwood Golf Course to Link Golf Ltd, a move supported by the course’s golf club. The decision was greeted with cheers from relieved campaigners

Keith Marsh, secretary at Brackenwood Golf Club, said: “Tonight’s result is just simply amazing.

“Myself and Robin Clarke from Brackenwood Golf Club have worked tirelessly on this project for four years trying to get a final approval to reopen our golf course and protect the greenspace in Bebington.

“We want to pay a heartfelt thanks to our community, they have backed us all the way for years now and gave us the strength to carry on when the times seemed so bleak in this process.

“We also want to pay tribute to all councillors we have worked with over the years, each and every one of them have supported us time and time again.

“We couldn’t possibly single any councillor out, but tonight they showed true leadership and stood by the community once again.

“We would also like to thank Link Golf UK, it was this golf operator that showed us their vision for Brackenwood that aligned with our own and we are so pleased we were able to get this across the line for them.

“We are excited to continue to work with them and bring Brackenwood back to life for our community and future generations.”
