The secret golf mission continues… and things are getting real. 😬⛳️

In Part 2 of this 3-part mini-series, I’m on the course with the amazing Chessie King as she pushes past the basics and starts building confidence with her swing. There’s laughter, a few mis-hits, and some seriously impressive progress – all with her husband still totally in the dark.

We’re halfway to the big surprise in Part 3… and Chessie is on track to absolutely nail it.

Welcome back to On the Road with Iona with Jesse King. Jesse, thanks for coming back. How are you doing? What’s been happening? I am wonderful. I I just gave myself a pep talk in the car cuz I was a bit early and I was like, I deserve to be on the course cuz I am a golfer in progress. Loving that. And I kept on repeating it. So that’s my mantra at the moment. Golfer in progress. What do you think the P is? Put no guess again. Performance. Power. Yes. All of these things. Yes. Oh my god. What does that mean? That’s good. Really good. That fourth one saved me. Thank you. So, this is episode two of a top secret series because we don’t want husband Matt to find out. Has he had any sort of inclin? What’s happened? Just a few little like he knows me so well. And it’s funny cuz he reads my mind and he was like, “Oh my god, do you know what you should do with Iuna? You should do a series where like she trains you up.” And I was like, “Why would I want to do that?” No, not me. When people have asked like, “Oh, like what are you doing?” I’m like, “Well, on Friday I’m training with my coach. I’m just I’m I’m very excited.” And I actually get to go on the course today, don’t I? You do. We’re going out there. We’re going to play three holes of golf and we’re going to have a little discussion about what happens on the golf course and how we take the skills that we’ve learned here on the driving range onto the course cuz it’s very different. We’re dealing a lot with mother nature and that’s part of the beauty and the fun of it. Are you ready? I’m so ready. I can’t wait. Let’s go. Here we go. Come on. Episode two, baby. What we do often before we go onto the course is we just loosen up, okay? And we try to find a feeling that we can take to the course. Doesn’t matter what the feeling is. It could be anything. Whatever it is for you is just perfect. Okay? So, we go drop halfway through the halfway to the thigh. Then we’ve got the left over wrapping it around. Then I’ve got this little pinky going around there and then lining up. Loosey goosey. Let the arms hang cuz they were a bit intense before, weren’t they? Nice. They were a bit um strong. And then we’re going down into the tea. Three, two, one. Here we go. First one. Yes. Brilliant. Hair’s up today. Yeah. Can’t blame the hair, Peach. Beautiful. Beautiful golf shot, Peach. And did you see how you moved the tea? And what happens there, Jesse? I need to explain this to you because it’s really really important. In golf, we think one thing and so very often it’s the the opposite is actually the truth. So, we want to hit the ball up in the air, don’t we? Yeah. So, our brain goes, “All right, I’m going to I’m going to try and hit it up in the air like I would anything I was trying to get up in the air, but in actual fact is if we try and get the ball up in the air, we’re in big trouble.” So, in golf, what we have to do is we have to hit down on the ball and the ball will go up. Brilliant. Brilliant. Little bit better. I want you to show me this sound. Okay. Oh, yeah. Okay. Nice. Yeah, that. Uh-huh. Let’s get that. Okay. Now, brilliant. Now, make it more of a full swing and show me that sound. Brilliant. Again. Yes. Yes. Okay, we’re going to finish the range now. Well done. Thrill that. Brilliant. Okay, are you ready? I’m so ready. We’re going to go. Is everyone else ready though? Cuz I’m coming in hot. I’m scared. We got you. Let’s go. What are these guys? Canaries? No, no, they’re goose. Geese. Oh, this is such an honor. What an amazing experience. I get to do this with you. So, listen. So cool. This is the tea. These are the tea boxes. And we cannot put the ball in front of them. Ah, it’s like bowling. So, we just make sure that we’re behind them. And then we’re just going to try and hit it kind of forward. And then we’re going to find it again and hit it forward again. Couldn’t tell you where that went. We want when the ball goes on the tea, when we put the club behind it um to be in the middle of the club face. So, let’s check if you put the club behind that. Oh, in the middle. So, you’re going to probably hit it about there cuz we don’t touch the ground with this club. Okay. So, that looks about perfect. Wow. So, my legs were more uh open cuz it’s bigger. Wider. Sorry, not open. My legs were wider. Sorry. My legs are spread open. Oh, so you gave me the analogy of the b baseball. Baseball. Yeah, baseball. So, what I want you to do is because some of that was accurate, some of it less. So, I want you to feel like the club’s going around your body like a baseballer. Yeah, that’s it. So, nice wide swing instead of the iron where I asked you to hit down. We’re not actually doing that with this club. We’re just we’re just clipping off the tea. Just clipping. All right. Nice. Just beautiful rhythmical swing. Good good practice swing. Get that tea. Yes. Oh. Oh. Oh. In the trees. Into the trees. But beautiful shot. Well done. Thank you. Your first shot on the course. Brilliant. So then we just put our we put our clubs back and we put the little hat on. Put his little hat on. Yeah. And then we’re just going to go and find our ball and we’re going to hit it again. Amazing. So Chess’s actually had a beautiful drive just down the left hand side here. When you’re out there and you’re brand new to the game of golf and you’ve you’ve kind of got a swing and you’re getting into things, I’d really suggest a great way to get onto the golf course is to take a tea with you and to just help yourself while you’re learning to actually allow yourself to tee up the ball. This is not normally what we do, Chess. Okay? But I want us to play the first hole, teeing it up. By the time we get to the third, I’m going to take the tea away. But for now, I want you to get out an eight iron. Yeah. Okay. Brilliant. Thank you. How would one gauge the wind? Do you just put your finger out and normally what we do is we rip a little bit of grass out. Oh, yes. I’ve seen Matt do this and we go like that. Ah, but then I wouldn’t know what to do with that. Like where Well, we’re hitting that straight into it now. But we don’t mind about that. We’re just trying to get closer to the green. So, let me see a nice smooth swing here. Really show the tea. Brilliant. Seeing you do it just made me think, “Yeah, I could I I’d love to try that.” Isn’t it amazing how that’s why, you know, representation and being visible is so important? Oh, so important, especially for the younger generation. Totally. For young girls, like the stat of when young girls drop out of sports is remarkable, isn’t it? It’s like those teenage years that they they develop, they obviously go hit puberty and then they think, well, it’s probably cooler being out on my phone and with my mates on Snapchat. Yeah. But the fact that they can come out and do this. So, there’s really no barrier to entry in golf and there’s so many ways that you can actually enjoy golf, whether it’s at driving range, whether it’s Top Golf, you name it. So many things you can do. Yeah. Right, Jesse? That was a lovely second shot. Didn’t quite reach the trees, which is the good news. Yay. And once again, just cuz we’re getting familiar with what’s happening out here in the wild. In the wild. We’re just going to tee it up a little bit. Thank you. Thread the needle. Oh. Oh. Straight in the bunker. No, no, it’s okay. No, we haven’t. We haven’t. At least we kind of got the right I got the right way, didn’t I? I saw that flag waving at me. And this is now just off the green. And this part of the game we call the short game. This is the game within the game. Yes. So this is the short game. So what do you think that bit of the game was called? Long game. Perfect. She’s nailed it. So when it comes to the short game, it’s not about power and explosion anymore. It’s about touch and feel, finesse, and creativity. Yeah. All right. We’ve got to create shots to try and get it close to the pin. So I’m just going to show you generally how this goes. My stance is much narrower because I’m quietening the lower body and I’m gonna put the ball on the back of my stance and I’m just gonna play off the back foot. Oh, what we call a kind of chip and run. So, it’s it’s landing and releasing. Chip and run. Did you see how gentle that was? It’s just lovely. Just a little chip. Yeah. Keep your weight on the left side. Yeah. Just rotate the arms back and through. Oh, nice. Really nice. So, hang on a second. Within one, two, within four shots, you’re on the green. I’m on the green. Perfect. Let’s go. Thank you. Wow. Oh, stop. Sorry, that doesn’t go on there. That good. Really good point. So, what we do is we don’t take the trolley on the green cuz the green is like the sacred sacred. So, we don’t just leave it randomly in over there because that’s going to slow everything down. We are going to go over here next. So, we’re going to leave our bags in the direction of where we’re going. But it feels nice on your feet, doesn’t it? It does, doesn’t it? Really nice. Oh, I’m on the green. Okay, so I’m going to bring my ball up to where yours is. Thank you. And we’re going to we’re going to play a little game of closest to the hole. Nice. So this is amazingly your first ever hole on the golf course. Your fifth shot, which is quite remarkable. Didn’t quite break. Oh, it’s a great putt. It’s a brilliant putt. I’m going to give you that. I’m going to give you that. We’re equal. We’re equal. We call this good. Good. Quick, quick, quick. In the hole. Yeah. Nicely done. What a ledge. Okay. Six shots. Thanks, boys. Sorry for holding you up. It would be great time to just tell as we walk to the next E. Yes. The gang at home and everyone on the channel who are getting to know you. Brilliant. You what what it what you do and what your background is and how we, you know, came to meet. Well, before I became a pro golfer, I no I um so I started in presenting when I was younger and did a lot of women’s sports. Um did a lot of Wimbledon and Evian and I just love just women in sport, hence why I’m here. Um and then I started sharing those interviews on social media. Um and it was before Instagram was quote unquote cool. Everyone was like, “What? what are you doing sharing Instagram feeds, posts, whatever. And back then it was literally just the square, the classic square. Um, and I yeah, just started working with different brands and different people. And actually the the way I did it was the female influencers that I I followed. I basically contacted them and I said, “Do you want to do a day in the life of you?” Um, when 15-second videos came out. Cool. So, I’d follow them around and do that. They would be like weightlifting. One of them was um a parolympian and I basically get to know them through these 50 15 seconds. Yeah. Um so chopped it all up and then interviewed them and then and edited it all, sent it to them and then they put it on their Instagram. Amazing. And it’s just a really fun way to get to know the industry a bit more and yeah, it was it was great. And then it’s kind of evolved since being a mom and like be able to just do things like this is incredible. It’s like the best part of the job. I’m setting up to this ball with it towards my left heel and I’m going to feel like the club comes around like a baseball and I’m just going to gently clip the ball off this tea. I’m going to show you how effortless this can be. I’m not going to try and put too much power into this at all. I’m just going to turn and swing. What? You didn’t put any power in that. No power. And look what the technology has done for me. to get our alignment. What I sometimes like to do and I’d suggest to do is just be come behind the ball, Jesse. Yeah. And then pick something in the distance that you’re aiming at. So, you see that man? Oh, yeah. And you see this bunker left of it. Let’s aim at that bunker cuz we can feel the wind’s going to push it from left to right. And then you draw an imaginary line all the way back to the ball and find something about a foot in front that’s in line with that. See that? You see that little guy? So that when you step in here, you can line your club face up with that and then you can get your feet, your knees, your hips, and your shoulders in line. Oh no. Where did that go? Right. It It was a bit of a top off the tea, but it really doesn’t matter. One thing I wanted to say to you is that this is a huge point. Most people find golf, in fact, sorry, everybody finds golf really hard. And when I have helped other women to get into golf, I think a lot of them have been quite surprised that most people are not very good at golf. And I’m not meaning that in a negative way. It’s just because it’s so hard. And even the best players in the world hit bad shots. So women that I’ve coached have be come to golf courses with me. They’ve seen the players hitting bad shots. They’ve gone, I didn’t realize golfers hit bad shots. Going, everybody hits bad shots. And it’s totally fine. Yeah. Oh, that is marvelous. That was lovelier the driver. Brilliant. Really good. I think that’s a really nice shot. We are seeing this consistent kind of right to left. Yeah. What’s the best golf course you’ve ever played off played? Uh oh, there’s so many. Yes. A couple of years ago, I played Augusta National. Did you? That was pretty cool. Oh, that’s so cool. Oh, yes. I was That’s so naughty of me. I just picked it up like, “Oh, take that. Take that with me.” Yeah. Going to drop that in the hole. So, as soon as we try and get it in the air, we’re in big trouble. Okay. What we have to do is we have to brush the grass just like we’ve been going over and over. Okay. So, from this position, I’m just going to turn. I’m going to brush the grass. And you see how beautifully high that ball went? Yeah. So, don’t even worry about the ball. Brush the grass all the way through. Oh, no. Whoa. That’s actually a ball machine. It’s going to work really well. So, we’re going to play the game again. I’m going to try and show you what’s happening roughly here. Easy ball. Easy. Lovely. All right. Oh, this is so good. Oh, brilliant pot. It looks like you can aim this one just straight at the hole, chassis. How do you celebrate in golf? On your knees? Just anything. You just with the flag. The flag. I mean, you can you can you got to create your own unique celebration. I’ll come to that. I’m going to give myself that. Wow. Thank you. That’s going to be a key part of golf is um finding your signature celebration. Yes. Yes. We’ll come to that. Well, well, that can be my next homework. Just like to say if you’ve been enjoying this series with Chesse, then please head across to her Instagram where you can give her some love. And we’d love it if you could take a moment to subscribe to this channel. We can’t do anything without your subscriptions. We can’t do anything without you hitting that subscribe button. It’s totally free. Means the world to us and allows us to keep creating content. Thank you. Right. Look at this cracking final hole on the lovely. Wait, so we put it in that big flag one? No. Not that. That would be a nice That would be a nice plot twist though. I thought the final one you get the big flag. Okay, so this is the driver and I’m going to do this the smooth one again for you just to show you how effortless it can be. Wow. Really not putting any power into that at all. What a shot. Wow. Come on. Needed you to tell me that. Come on, the golfer. I want the best out of you and I want this I want you to have these mini breakthroughs. Yeah, that was that was a milestone, wasn’t it? It was a milestone. That was just this beautiful soft draw. Oh, it’s so good. What a golf shot over the road. Thank you. Can’t wait for our sausage and bacon bap after this. Me either. Now, we’re going to learn here this shot that is called the chip and run. The chip and run is a brilliant shot to have around the green. We’re going to use it a lot in our career. And it’s where we basically play the ball like a putt, but we’re using the pitching wedge, right? Okay. We do exactly what we do with a putt. We create this triangle with our arms and we rock it back and forward. Only difference is we’re going to keep our weight on our left leg. So, my weight’s on my left leg. I’m going to rock the triangle. And you see how that’s this kind of low running. Yeah. Beautiful. It’s just going to run all the way onto the green for me. Nice. And now I’ve got a lovely little putt. So, weight on the left leg. That’s it. Triangle. Triangle. Oh goodness. So, that was actually a really nice little pitch shot, but Thank you. Just went a bit too far. Just a bit too far. Setting the triangle. Having a little look at the ground. It’s going to break a bit from left to right this one. Oh, I’ve absolutely smacked it. I hit the pin. I’ve raced it. So, let’s see if you can get closer than that. Oh, I like this. Get in the hole. Oh, a little hop, skip a jump. Yay. Lovely putt that was. Thank you. You done so well. Oh my god, that was my first three holes. I loved that. Thank you so much. Best golf partner ever. Thank you so much for watching episode two of this wonderful episode with Jesse. We’ll see you next time.

  1. Loving this took up golf when I was 60 and just love you can play it as you get older Chessie is doing brilliantly you are a fab coach Iona! 🏌️‍♀️⛳️

  2. Loving watching Chessie get into the game.
She is a very quick study – I suspect she has had a fair bit more instruction, and practice, than we have seen, but very well done!!
Look forward to Episode 3 ….. and then follow ups.

  3. I don't have an Instagram account, but here's my shout out to Chessie: Great job Chessie! You are way ahead of most beginners, in no small part because you have Iona. But, you do appear to have loads of natural ability. GO!

  4. Loving this series. As a beginner myself next time out I'm going to put some of these things in action. Thank you both GREAT VIDEO

  5. I already wish I could putt as well as Chessie! With all the clubs she is already better than I was when I started.

  6. Love this series. Reminds me golf is meant to be fun which is easy to forget mid round when things aren't going to plan

  7. Iona, you told her all golfers hit bad shots. What you haven’t told her yet is that almost no one hits so many good shots their first time out as she has.

  8. I really enjoyed this, I lost my swing a while back and wanted to quit but watching this made me think of just getting back to the basics. Thank you! Hopefully play better today for my second round of the year.

  9. Well done Iona,, fab teacher, Chessie you are a breath of fresh air, you enthusiasm is infectious . Hope you stick at it, its the most amazing game (when its going well) hahahah!!!!!!

  10. Golf is a great sport, and it would be amazing if more young people had the chance to get into it—especially if it was introduced in schools in some way. The reality, though, is that driving ranges and courses are still pretty expensive, which makes it hard for people to practise regularly. There are lots of programmes aimed at encouraging new players, but I think the overall cost, especially for young people, really needs to be looked at more closely.

  11. This is brilliant. But not sure it can ever be said “there really is no barrier to entry for golf”. It still has one of the highest barriers of any sport due to the amount of (expensive) kit involved
