⛳ Are DTC Irons Worth It?

In today’s video, we’re going to be reviewing the Haywood PD1 power distance irons, and we’ve got the set four to pitch. So, looking forward to this one because I’ve not seen many reviews on the entire set. Let’s get stuck in. >> So, we’ve got Mr. James Robinson with us today. How are you? Loves a good bargain. >> I do. I am very, very tight fisted in Yorkshire. >> So, we’ve got a DTOC brand. Obviously, Haywood is a family business. I >> I don’t know. You know a lot more about these than I do. And I must admit, I do like the look of these. They’re very They’re very P770s, aren’t they? I’m actually going to borrow them for a video if I can because I feel like these could be a really good rival for the likes of like Tacoma and Cali and brands like that. Even Ram and Lynx and all these DC brands that have now come back in the market. >> I mean, I’ll just show you a little look at the profile of club. So, from the top, it’s kind of like a midsize profile. If we just have a look at that top line. Um, a little bit of offset, but I think from like you’ve just said, it’s like a power distance iron, is it? It’s >> I think you’re How much are these? >> I think off the top of my head, they’re in the region about 549. >> So, you’re looking at either a brand new set of these, of which you’ve got good shafts and good components in, or you’re looking at secondhand set of like tailormaids or pings, aren’t you? >> And what I would say with price, it does vary based on where you are. So that’s why I don’t like to kind of include price too much, but I’ve built these for myself. Uh there’s not many upgrades on here apart from really fereral which I’ve kind of got yellow. It’s very Watford. >> Well, I wanted it to match the shaft bands. So I’ve got the dynamic. >> You know what? I’ll >> I’ll concede that. Yeah, that’s good. That >> so you can build them to spec, but I follow Josh on Instagram and I think it’s really nice to see what’s going on behind the scenes with these brands. You don’t get to see that with like >> is that Josh Haywood? Is it >> Josh Haywood? Yeah. And if you are a bit of a golf geek like us, I’m doing a minieries on these irons where we’re going to get in depth with the numbers and play some N matches. So, I’m going to be comparing all the different profiles or iron. >> Yeah. >> Um and talking about them cuz it’s probably not an I’ve not thought about buying a power distance iron, but I think it’s good to test them. >> I think a lot of people in the market will benefit from them. As long as you got okay spin rates and you can control the distance and get consistent distance, I think we’re good to go. Am I going or do you want to get teed off? >> What um what iron have you got? >> I’ve got the four iron. Try and play like a nice mid-flighted one. Little bit of offset so I can maybe even get it moving right to left which would be nice. That was a safe flight. >> That felt absolutely delightful. That and that, you know what? If you bring that in, I didn’t realize, but that was a little bit towy. If you look at the >> Yeah, it were a really nice sort of power draw, weren’t it? The four iron. >> Yeah, that was a four iron. Yeah. And that for a distance from me on this hole is pretty perfect if you can see where it is. >> I think I’m going to join you on four. >> I’m going to clean it for you cuz I feel bad. >> Thank you. >> I’m going to aim a similar line to James. I’d expect four iron to be carrying sort of 185 plus. Let’s see what this feels like. >> Oh, that’s solid. >> Wow. >> That’s carried 209 yards. So, a hell of a lot further than I were expecting. Uh, >> so I think one of the things I really do like about Haywood is that they’ve got quite a good offering, you know, on the custom fit side of things. >> Yeah. >> Um, you can obviously get their stock product at a really good price, but you can also upgrade components and, you know, really spec them up if you want to. >> Yeah. >> Which I think is fantastic from a a DTOC. Is that like a an online fitting kind of thing where you you questionnaire it, you pick almost what you want and then and then go for it from there? >> Yeah, you can go down that route or you can obviously just, you know, like we’ve done in past, >> speck it up as as you want it. >> Speck them up, get a bit spicy with shafts and grips and like I’ve done with huzzles. >> Yeah. >> Um, you know, to make the clubs look good. >> How far you got, James? 120 left in >> 120 >> which for a four iron off the tea this time of year I think is quite good. I’m going to chip a nine iron because it’s a bit windy. >> That was the last one. >> That was the last one. I I want that’s only n ir really. >> Right. >> Do you know what? I’m not sure if you’ve got too much club here. >> Yeah. But so what I like to test with irons like this is can we kind of control the flight a bit. >> All right. >> Cuz we all know I could we could hit a wedge that distance if you want to. I’m glad we’ve got you here cuz I’m not that good at hitting half shots. This would be a good uh test for the iron. >> Hopefully that’s about the right distance, >> which it is. You can see that even even having pulled it a little bit, we’ve still got pretty good distance. >> Right. So, I’ve got the same distance as James. I’m going to go with pitching wedge. What I like about this is that it shows quite a bit of loft. So, it’s not just jacked for some sort of power distance. Very jacked in loft. This looks really inviting to it. Oh, bit behind it. User error. >> See what it’s like around the greens. >> They can’t save that one. Due to your oncourse testing, you get to try them from all the different lies. And it didn’t do bad to say it was such a bad strike. It’s not that short. What’s it going to feel like just around green? Oh, nice. That felt soft. Oh, I love that. Can I just show you loft on that? Cuz you don’t get many pitching wedges in this category that look so lofted. Nice and rounded as well, isn’t it? >> Yeah, >> that’s really nice that beautiful. >> But what I like about that as well, you can see how quickly it stopped. >> Yeah. Let’s have a look at that stopping. >> And again, that’s something which for a club like of this design, it’s showing it’s going to be generating okay spin rate for it to >> It wasn’t high, was it? >> No. That were a bit of a knockdown shot. So, you weren’t expecting to spin back, but it stopped like within six feet, aren’t you? >> Yeah. which I think you’re more than happy with realistically. Stay up. Stay up. >> Tell you what, that had a bit of swing on it, didn’t it? >> A lot, didn’t it? I’m quite pleased that the pace was uh >> Should we take a honorable laugh? I >> think so. I think so. On an iron test. >> So, we’re just at Mulligan’s golf bar and sim, and we’re going to be getting some data on these Haywood irons. I’ve got five iron, seven iron, and pitching wedge. Let’s have a look what they launch. Let’s have a look what they spin like and get some uh numbers. So, a little bit about that at the bottom, but it’s still flowing. It’s still launched. So when I look back at this data, what I couldn’t believe is I was striking everything towards toe. At no point did I feel that with a pitching wedge or the 7. Everything flew straight at the green three times out of three from 120. Tight dispersion as well. Only three yards back to front. And then in the seven I again same dispersion apart from one miss it which I’ll delete. I caught that one a little bit heavy. Three yards back to front dispersion. Spin was a little bit on the lower side. I think that’s something I could fine-tune maybe with a bit softer ball or potentially a little bit more loft on the clubs. Um, and moving into long iron. This is where I probably didn’t get away with as much hitting the toe shots cuz a little bit of offset on the clubs, a little bit more speed. I missed a couple of shots left of the green and uh and two caught the green. But that’s just typically me at the minute. I’m striking everything towards the toe which is dropping that spin a little bit. But overall performance really good. I were happy with them results. I didn’t even feel like I did anything out at toe. Right. So, we’re going to play a chip and run and then we’re going to play a really shortsided chip to see what these are like for control. So, we’ve got the longer one first. How we how you seeing this, James? >> Uh, well, it’s just a low bumper run, isn’t it? So yeah, >> land it kind of a third of the way there and just see how it can kind of release out. It’s checked nicely and released. It came a little bit hot, but >> is that the seven iron? >> That’s the nine iron. >> Nine iron. >> Yeah. >> So try and take a little bit off it. Maybe that’s better. But this is where you do when so when you buy a new set of clubs, >> you learn how to use them around here and you learn how they how they kind of work really. So >> I’ll let you I think once you get used to them, probably not using that much energy around the green and letting the club do the work. >> Just let the club do the work more than anything. >> Not a bad idea. >> Yeah, that’s nice. >> I think I learned a little bit off you there. Hit this one a little bit more positive. Yeah, I mean they’re not sort of rocking off face. It’s a quite a nice soft impact. >> Yeah. >> Let’s play a shorter sided one. >> Well, I’ll let you go first this time. Do with this to claw it back. >> A little bit of a slope to navigate. I’d probably say I’d use a bit more loft than pitchy way. So, it’ll be a test. Let’s see if we can get it stopping. >> Oh, nice. >> Yeah, that was really good. >> I think I’d probably use 56 in this position normally, but See, the fact you can get that amount of control with them though is very impressive. >> Yeah. >> You think >> I think you’ll be good at this one. James got a bit more of a softer touch than me cuz you can open the face up a bit. >> See, for me, they do they do fire off a little bit for me, but it’s just a bit of a learning curve about what loft to use. Even that one’s probably a bit too firm. But with a hollow body club, you’re always going to get that. It’s never going to be It’s never going to be a blade, is it? >> I think that’s the first look at the Haywood PD1s. We’re going to be doing some more testing on these. I say first impressions wise, I’m mega impressed with the profile of the golf club. I think I’m impressed with the versatility of them. You know, we still could shot >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Um and I think obviously price point, it’s massively attractive. >> It’s another contender in that market, isn’t it? And that’s the market, I think, which is making golf a lot more accessible for people. >> Absolutely. Guys, if you’re enjoying the videos, make sure you hit the subscribe button. Make sure you check James Robinson out. He’s going to be doing a review on these irons as well. And if you’ve enjoyed that, you want to see some data, keep an eye out for the minieries because I think that’s going to be a fantastic one. Playing some matches with these irons over 9, g of a longer test and seeing where someone like me, who’s probably not the best sort of single figure at the minute, would actually go, what direction. We’ll see you in a few days time, guys. Bye.

  1. DTC works if you know all the spec you need BUT there’s always the actual feel when it’s in your hands. This is where DTC has a problem. It’s where someone like Sam with his custom fitting venture might be able to carve a niche

  2. I'm enjoying these vlogs with James, the two youtubers I watch the most. This longer match you mentioned will be good.
