After teaching golf for 25 years, I’ve noticed one thing that literally every golfer is doing wrong. And I mean everybody, no matter what you’re working on at the moment, whether it’s trying to create lag or more turn or speed, if you don’t get this one thing right, there’s no chance you will be able to solve this. But if you follow along and do what I’m going to tell you in a second, you will get all those things for free. The one thing I’m talking about and this is the movement we have to learn today. That’s the movement of the trail arm. Hello Fiona. Welcome back. Thank you. She’s going to assist me today again showing you how to improve your golf game. Thanks for being here. Both arms are important in the golf swing. But the trail arm probably has a little more the more important role and it has to be trained better. And we’re going to talk about this now in three wonderful steps. So step number one, the misconception of the arms in the golf swing. This is a tricky one. When you look at the golf swing, yeah, it looks something like this, right? It looks like if the hands were swinging from the right side as a right-handed golfer to the left side, but actually this is an illusion. It’s not really happening. What is happening is that the arms are actually moving up and down and up again. And the interesting part is they are doing it on a specific place. They’re doing it on the trail side. In my case, on the right side of my body. So the hands go here and here and there. And the thing is when golfers try to swing the club, they are trying to get the arms artificially in here, but actually it’s only the body getting their hands here. So this is actually a good drill people can do at home. Would you just take a set up, please, and do exactly what I just did. Lift your arms. So this is lovely because now you can see the hands are just opposite of your right shoulder. Just the perfect place. You don’t want to be over there when you do this drill. Okay. So, perfect. Lift the arms up a little bit more. And now I want you to keep your head on the same spot more or less. And just turn. Perfect. Now your arms are in a perfect spot. And if you look at the trail arm now, the tr the up arm here is more or less parallel to the ground. So there’s a space between your elbow and the body. And also here, also here. Can you just remove your left hand a little quickly here? Here’s an angle. Look, this is not even 90°. This is like 45. Now, tour players have around 70°. So, this is zero. They have about 70. Most golfers have the tendency to overfold. So, this is a fantastic exercise you can do. Again, just move your trail arm up just with one hand. Perfect. See how it’s parallel to the ground? Turn. And you will feel actually where your arm will be. Now do it with two hands and turn. Wonderful. That’s awesome. Step number two. We have more to learn. So if Fiona, would you please start again? Make a step setup and lift the club up like as we did before. All the way up here. And now turn. Perfect. So now we have the down swing. And the thing is when we in the down swing here, we want to get the club in a nice on a nice plane like this here. See, this looks good, right? You’re happy with that? Mhm. How does that look like? Not good. How does that look like? Not good. Okay. So, we want to get right here. I want you to watch your elbow. What did your elbow do? It just literally went down straight and reconnected close to your hipbone. Right. You didn’t do any crazy stuff like going here or there. Yeah. M. So he was going right here. And this basically folks is the reason or the the way how to get it on plane perfectly every time. Could you do a couple of rehearsals with two hands now where you do the same drill? You go up up here. Lift it. The arm is parallel to the ground. Turn. And now you move the club down. That’s it. And if you do this, you’re going to have it every time. Don’t worry. Perfect. So this is one thing. But there’s a sequence. There’s a sequence to it. And so what you did now is you actually connected the elbow again, right? Yes. The second thing, the second thing which will happen is that this angle here is going to get less. You’re going to get rid of this angle completely. No, not completely. Just a little bit. Mhm. And in the end the third part is the wrists are going to uncook. So the sequence is reconnect then you lose this angle a little bit and then the wrist. Yes. And when you do this when you do this here here this whole sequence and turn you get exactly in that movement pattern. So just can can you just show us maybe? So you go up here, go there and look. Ah, perfect. She did something which many golfers do. She actually moved the club down and lost the angle here. Right. So you want to go here and you want to check that this still stays like this and don’t do this. So don’t go like this and then down. You reconnect. Then you unhinge here. You unhinge here. Just try it again. That’s beautiful. Yes. and then turn. That’s exactly the feeling. Perfect. Well, I think having the idea is wonderful, but I have a much better drill for you which we’re going to try in a second. Take your normal stance and do a split hand grip. So, go here, go down here, and move the club over here. Take a back swing. And the good thing with the split hand drill is that you will also feel a lot of width, a lot of space here already. So, this is what you do. And now you just practice this sequence. You go going down, reconnecting. And after I’ve reconnected, I dynamically move my hands closer. It’s going to be a 10 finger grip. It’s not It’s a drill. It’s not a It’s not a real shot. It’s a a feeling. So you go here, reconnect, get closer here, reconnect, closer, and follow through. This actually will give you a feeling for the real sequence. Okay. Reconnect. Reconnect. Yeah, that’s it. Perfect. And after you’ve done this a couple of times on a driving range, for example, now you could hit a golf ball with the same feeling. Let’s try that. Okay. Well done. So, there’s only one thing missing. One thing missing. I think you need for a perfect strike. And that’s coming up. Now, how do we get this beautiful shaft lean like the pros have? This compression, this wonderful strike. Let me show you something. When you simulate the impact position of a great player, it looks something like this, right? So, you can see my trail hand has still some extension. Now the shaft is leaned forward because of that. If you wouldn’t have that like say the the trail wrist would be straight. I would be here. So the number one reason you have shaft lean is the position of your trail wrist. Keep that in mind. But there’s something else which is important. Let’s go into impact again. Have a look where my belly button is pointing. is pointing over there right to the camera. So that means my hands are actually not on my left side, they’re actually on my right side. In this from this angle here, it looks like my hands are left. From this angle here, it looks like my hands are right, but in reality, they’re on the right side. And I think that’s something really important to remember. So what does that mean in a golf swing? That means when you move your hands up and down, if I don’t do the rotation like this, you will have an increase of drill wrist extension here in the down swing. So, it’s going to go from here to there. It’s going to be from here to here. And then I have this shaft clean. And then the arms will straighten up and go this in this direction here. If I blend those together, it would look like something like this here. And this is what Fiona is going to show us. Now, so would you just go into a impact position, please? In impact position, you’re going to have your weight further forward. You can have your hips turned a little bit. And you want to make sure that the belly button is pointing to in this direction. Turn your belly button a little bit more. That’s it. See, now you get the feeling of a good impact position. Mhm. So, just do a couple of rehearsals where you just go from here to there and try to get the same feeling again. Again, that’s it. And then the hands go up. Perfect. So, I want you to now to try this drill like we did before, like where you lift the arms up and down, but then you add a little bit of trail wrist extension up here. So, do a couple of those without hitting the ball. Just up and down. And now you move it there. See? Mhm. When you go down, go up again. That’s it. Try to hit a shot and try to add this feeling in the shot. But remember, your belly button has to point left of your hands at impact. Just a slow shot. Perfect. So, that’s a drill. Play around with this feeling. You’re going to get a much much better compression. You guys at home, try to improve your trail movement. Even if you don’t get it perfectly, everything you get better with a trail arm will improve your golf game. I promise. Fiona got better. We practiced this actually a couple minutes before we taped this and you had fantastic results doing this. You will at home will have it. And now please watch this video next. Bye-bye. Bye.

Can I use the same drill with my woods ?
Did you use AI for the burning arm stunt in the promo or was that for real?

Nice work on getting an assistant. I think your instruction is top notch! Always appreciate your teaching
Fiona has a smooth swing. Love the dynamic of having an assistant to practice the drills.
Fantastic teacher …provides the details but focus is getting the feel.
Fantastic explanation, and a great assistant too!
Good Explanation Christoph, thank you ☝🏻
Keep up your good work. One day you will be able to make golf more complicated and unplayable.
