Ryder Cup Finger Pointing Begins – Who’s REALLY to Blame?

All right, so Keegan Bradley has come out talking about a rule that has to change before the next playing of the RDER Cup. And him approaching this subject right now has a lot of people wondering, is this just sour grapes or does it really hold any water? We’re going to talk about that rule in just a second, as well as Luke Donald’s own reaction to that rule. But more importantly, the question we have is looking back at it playing Monday morning quarterback, what went wrong for the US team? Is it the fact that some really bad decisions were made? Were players, as we all know, not playing up to their capability, or did they just come up against an unstoppable force? One of the best teams we’ve ever witnessed, an absolute wrecking ball of a team that was the European team. So, we can we can decompress this. We can talk about what possibly went wrong. I want to get you some of your own feelings down in the comments below because there’s a lot to get into. And I want to even dive deeper and look at some of that data and see was there stuff that really should not have been missed given the fact that now captains and their vice captains have so much more data than ever before on every single one of their players. Is there no excuse for missing certain things? We’ve got a lot to talk about. Before we get into it all, of course, I want to thank this week’s sponsor, Titus. And guys, Titus is always looking for ways to help you shoot lower scores. And the golf ball you play can make a big difference. And there’s something you should know about. Alignment integrated marking or AIM are alignment lines precisely printed on your titleless golf ball. Aim technology has been found to help golfers be up to 35% more precise in lining up putts. So, AIM can also help with confidence in lining up that target off the tea. So, first there’s AIM Performance, which is a tour inspired 105 degree line available in black, red, blue, or pink, as well as aim enhanced, which is a distinctive threeline alignment design. Both aim performance and aim enhance are available in the Prov1, Prov1X, and Prov1X left dash. And if you play Titleless AVX or Titus Tour to soft golf balls, those are available with AIM 360, a threeline design that wraps all the way around the golf ball. And you really have to see these AIM designs in order to appreciate them. So go to titus.com, check them out. They can massively help with your alignment. So Mike, I mean, we’re watching this, you’re watching the first couple days unfold. I think a lot of us, you and I, you know, included, we’re kind of yelling at our TV screens at times with some of the decisions that were made. We were also there on the grounds on Thursday when we heard the initial pairings. We were actually standing right on the range right behind Bryson Dashambo as he’s hearing them. We’re hearing them and we have some fan reaction. There was a lot that went on. I also want to talk in a minute. We’ve got to address the whole issue of what went down with the fans with Rory because there were to me certain things that again I don’t want to take a single thing away from this European team. This European team just came in and they beat the Americans hands down. But I do think there were some unforced errors on the American side to learn from that caused even more difficulty, including I think from what we witnessed firsthand, what we saw on television, all of that. I think what the fans did in a certain way, whereas it’s supposed to create homefield advantage actually backfired in a number of ways and actually hurt the team rather than helping it. And it’s a tradition and a trend I don’t want to see carried on any further. But what were your initial reactions after seeing those first two days? I mean, we went we’ve been talking about the RDER Cup on this show for like the last month or so and you and I have discussed strength of of team and we even alluded that the Europe looked stronger, but we also at the end of it we concluded that it was going to end up being a close fight and it ended up being close at the end. I mean, it just a couple of points separated it and it and it made for what I thought was uh probably one of the most exciting RDER Cup Sundays in that, you know, I’ve ever witnessed. You know, it was it was just exciting. It gave us something to watch yesterday and root for. I cheered so loud so much yesterday and I can’t believe I was still cheering at 5:00 p.m. after them being down so much. Um, but you know, after seeing the first two days, there were things that I scratched my head on. And it’s been made known. It’s been public. Everyone’s talking about it, so we must all be thinking about the same thing. Was that first thing that was that Keegan pairing of Colin Yeah. and Harris English again in the afternoon. It’s just, you know, you could take steps back and say, should Colin have even have been on the team? You know, you can go that far back and say Keegan should have been playing in Colin’s spot. And I know he’s going to get a lot of fingerpointing at that this week. But to me, that was the first mistake from the captain. Um, but again, overall, I just think it wasn’t Keegan. I just think US putters didn’t show up and the European team just played so well. It felt like I I the I never saw them miss a putt. It felt like Europeans were under pressure under I kept saying it out loud. This guy doesn’t miss. see those and he drain it. Incredible. And like like you said, Sunday really did thankfully become watchable. Um but again, just like records everywhere, records being broken, records being tied. Even the comeback and the amount of matches that the US team won on Sunday was yet another record. But speaking of records, I thought this was really interesting. I think it was really kind of telling for that overall power of the European team versus how much of this was the mistake of the US team. So very interestingly the Europeans on that Friday session they set a scoring record for the RDER Cup going I think it was 16 under par. So a again an unbeatable force just making as so many birdies and es especially in some of these more difficult formats to do that. Then the US team came back and responded in kind. They exactly tied that record the next day with going 16 under par. I believe 16 was the number, but they tied it and they were beat again by the Europeans who even but bested their record-breaking numbers. So just keep that in mind as we secondguess this. I don’t want to put all the blame on the decisions that were made. However, when you come down to how close it did become on Sunday, every point truly truly matters, which is why we’re going to talk also about that rule change in just a second because even a half a point does matter quite a bit. But we got to talk about Morawa. Morawa, it comes in. He is the number one most questioned guy on the team as a as a captain’s pick. Yes, he was pretty far up in the points, but most of his points had happened earlier on in the season. And everyone knows he was out of form for the second half of the season. And when it comes down to golf, and we’ll see this when we talk about Scotty Sheoffller in just a second, it really does come down to you get streaky sometimes. Sometimes you’re hot, sometimes you’re cold. And the moment we have two two very different stories here. Morawa trending down as far as his his overall form. His moment that was not his moment. Otherw other side of the story you have Tommy Fleetwood who picks up four points for the team by himself. Lights out trending in the other direction. His you know so you just need to I think as a captain part of your job is to see like who is who’s has their game right now versus who doesn’t. That’ll come in for Scotty Sheffler in just a second. But when we saw to take a guy who’s the most probably the most questioned guy to be on the squad and put him out in the first session on Friday, I feel like all the guys who go out in the first session are tone setters. I feel like you got to come out strong and if we learn anything from Rome, you need to come out and get some points. They send him out with with Harris English and I think this is the most important thing. Data Golf had did an interesting breakdown on this and if you look at it out of they they ran all the possible uh force um pairings I’m sorry all the possible pairings that could have been done for forsomes in that match and out of all of them based on data alone the weakest the 132 options the worst possible option was to send Harris English and Morawa out there and that’s exactly what happened and I get it there there’s a lot more to this than data But I think that the European team did an incredible job of using data. They also all played well. But I think that the data was underutilized on the US side and you can play for feel and whatever, but it was a mistake. But then to me, I’m okay with the mistake. You know, you lost a point. Also, arguably going up against Europe’s strongest team in Fleetwood Mackoy. You could almost say it’s a sacrificial lamb position. whoever was going to go out there was gonna take the take the L. You could say that. But then to for Keegan to turn around where this is where to me I can forgive that mistake. The unforgivable mistake for me was to put them back out there again on Saturday in that format, you know, against the same team and lose bad again. And and and I know what he said. You know, Keegan said, you know, these guys want to go out and prove themselves. They want another chance. Okay, but you’re still the captain. I don’t care if you want your chance. We’re not doing that again. That’s first of all. And and secondly, it’s just, you know, Keegan, remember, was not a playing captain because he wanted that full captaincy role where he wanted the full attention where he could go through pairings and stuff like that and not be distracted by his own play. Well, if you’re not going to deviate, he said, “We have a plan. We’re going to stick to it.” If you’re not going to deviate from your plan, you might as well have been a playing captain. Set your plan ahead of time and go out there and play. Right. That’s my my my gripe with that one. Yeah. Um I think uh you know the more power thing I mean obviously everyone was talking about it afterwards, but you can easily say that he was probably afraid to send rookies out in the morning. You said tone setters. How do you send Cam Young out in the morning when he’s never played in a Ryder Cup? Now granted going back if you can reverse time I’m sure he would have now. Um I would have loved to see him. I was in Ben, you know, him and Sam Burns even, even if you don’t do Griffin and Young, two rookies together, you know, I think, you know, in that afternoon, it definitely should have been a different that could have been the turning point, the change that America needed. I mean, I don’t know. At the end of the day, to me, it was two gifted points. Yeah, two points. And those points really mattered. Next one, again, sticking with the plan versus altering it. Scotty Sheffller. Look, we got to talk about it. I mean, he’s the number one golfer in the world, but there’s a lot of things, a lot of question marks. Absolutely terrible showing for him and and I, for me, I, you know, as fans of these guys, I was happy to see the redemption that they had, Morawa included, on Sunday, going out there and and doing what they needed to do in their matches. I believe Morau got a half a point, but still saving some face from it just being a complete wipeout. But whether it was and I heard an interesting analogy on the broadcast talking about guys who are sprinters versus marathon runners, right? And sprinters, it’s like the the guys who were good at that match play. They can go out there and win that match. Then you have your mar marathon players, guys like Scotty Sheffller who get 72 holes just to keep pouring it on. And how many times have Scotty been down on Sunday and we see him come all the way back. Stroke play fits in, but also in things like, you know, forsomes and stuff like that. How much is Scotty taking out of his rhythm? How much is he a rhythm guy and then he’s playing, you know, in an alternate shot and does that distract from it versus how much some guys can just have an off week? No matter what it is, at some point, even if it’s your number one guy on paper, you got to have the guts to bench him. Yeah. And the guts just weren’t there. Again, going back to this data golf, right? Get this stat. Since 1979, 12 players started their RDER Cup by going 0 and2 on day one and got sent back uh and and got sent back out in session three. Uh but all three of them won their match. Now, interestingly enough, you look at this and you look at Scotty and you’re like, why keep sending him out? As you you can tell, I mean, it doesn’t take data, it doesn’t take anything like that to know he’s was off his game. to see Scotty with a wedge in hand and being 30 feet from the pin. To see Scotty just seemingly no confidence with the with the flat stick. Um, you got to to me being a great captain and I don’t want to take anything away from from Keegan because I think there again there’s the the reason that they lost at the end of the day. I think we we have to learn from these mistakes. The reason they lost was the European team was so good. I think the end, but I got to I can’t just roll over and not ask the question, why would you just keep putting Scotty back out there when we saw the way he was playing? Yeah. It’s like, you know, Aaron Judge in game four of the World Series, they lost the first three and he was 0 and 16. You bench him in game four, you know, like he’s number one play in the world and I know Keegan would have faced so much backlash if he did bench him, but Scotty had the weight of the world on his shoulder. He’s the number one. He’s like walk on water material and he couldn’t show up for his team. Sure. So all that weigh on him so heavily. You saw he was crying at one point because it got so emotional for him because he couldn’t do what everybody needed him to do. But that’s where even to me to me it’s vastly different than benching a guy in baseball. Right here we got a a fluid squad right to some extent. Why don’t you take him out just like give him a rest to collect himself? I know they keep wanting to send the guys back out to to write their wrongs or to feel like the bounce back but understand be like Scotty tough session. I know we had you for the second half. I’m going to let you sit, maybe work on the the the putting stroke, whatever you want to do. Just going to give you a breather to collect yourself and then come back out instead of just sending him right back out. I think it took guts from Keegan to do that. And I just something he wanted to avoid because I just think no one in their in their mind in their whole planning strategy for this ever thought to bench Scotty Sher no matter how he was like Scott none of us wanted to believe that Scotty was was playing that way and we thought any minute it’ll turn around, right? That’s a tough part about it. That’s a tough part. So that was another big thing. Again, you guys let us know in the comments. Do what would you have done, you know, Monday morning quarterback all day. Like in the comments, let us know. Would you have sat Scotty or would you just keep sending him out there as was probably the initial plan? I mean, but if you take like the Colin Harris English afternoon debacle, not um not benching or resting Scotty. What else did Keegan make a mistake of? He talked about that he takes the blame for the course setup and all that stuff. I will I yeah I will give him the the real benefit that he at the end didn’t duck it. He came out and he said it’s me. You know he’s like I’ll take the blame because I’m the head of this team. Whatever. I think that as far as course setup goes. Look, they set that course up to make a lot of birdies. And at the end of the day, the US team just didn’t do it. At least on the first day. The European team took advantage of it and they really went after it. They couldn’t put the USA couldn’t putt, right? And I think that it came down so much to execution, but I think there were just a couple of little things and and I think if if it hadn’t become so close again on Sunday, we wouldn’t be secondg guessing these few decisions here or there because Morau going back out, Scotty continuing to go back out. You know, that could have turned the tide to precious one or two points now actually matters. If they hadn’t come back so strong on Sunday, then we probably would have been like, well, it’s just a matter that they played terrible and this this wouldn’t carry as much weight. But it carries weight. So again, it comes a learning experience. You got another RDER Cup in two years. How do you learn from this? The other thing that I think needs to be learned from is again these unforced errors. I think one of the biggest one was the paytoplay. Mhm. At the end of the day, I think the decision that was made to pay the US players was an was an unforced error for the ages. I think the benefit to the players of an extra $200,000 versus the additional pressure and grief that it caused them was undeniably, you know, mismatched. Yeah. We were there. We were standing in the crowd. I I can only explain to you here like I can tell you that everywhere I turned that’s what I heard spectators talking about. These guys are getting paid. He’s like, “Oh, the US team’s getting paid.” I hear guys explaining it to other guys. It’s always chatter everywhere. These guys are getting paid, getting paid, getting paid. So that becomes that. On top of that, by giving these guys anything, and we did a whole episode, we talked about this last week. We talked about we thought it was going to be a mistake. You you’re handing an already very gelled team that is the European team. You’re handing them gifting them a rally rallying cry that we play for pride. They play for money. Even though it’s money that is insignificant, it is pocket change to a guy like Scotty Sheffller. He makes more, you know what I mean? Just showing up than than that does any other week. Y but the reality was, like I said, it wasn’t enough money to change their lives in anything but for the worse. Yeah. And I think that was a huge mistake. Yeah. I mean, they were all definitely asked about it. I mean, a lot of them nipped him pretty quickly. Even Scotty was saying he’s going to, you know, build give back to the community and all that stuff. And that should have ended it right for that guy. But they still were forced to answer that question. Exactly. they were still that question was still brought in front of them and uh who knows if that was something that you know caused them to not be as passionate. I think if anything like I said it gave more fuel to the fire of the European team to say this is evidence that we play for pride. Yeah. I mean the Ryder Cup I feel is like it’s it’s chess out there what they’re doing. This that’s the thing the small when the smallest things can make difference 100%. Why give any edge and that to me was handing an edge Yeah. for no reason whatsoever. Mhm. The other mistake that I think was made, you cannot blame the US team for this, but again, it’s a lesson to be learned, is that I think what especially on Saturday, what the home American fans did was went way too far. And again, instead of like you’re supposed to be homefield advantage, it’s supposed to be like the, you know, the 13th man, so to speak. It’s supposed to it’s supposed to lift the US team. It’s supposed to make the you know give you that home field advantage other than setting up the course is the is the energy of the crowd and when the what the crowd did especially to Rory and Lowry on Saturday was I think worked against it. It worked against them. We heard reports that even guys like Justin Thomas and some others on the US team were having to turn to their counterparts and apologize to them for what they were hearing from the crowd. That should never happen. That is a a distraction that your own team does not need. On top of that, having to send out the police, state troopers to walk and and and form lines. This is not what the RDER Cup should be. You know, I’ve also heard people talking about be like this isn’t, you know, the waste management we saw becoming this party and carrying on further and further and further to the point where it reached a tipping point, right? Same thing like do is this what we have to do some soularching as as as golf fans. Is this what we want the RDER Cup to be? You know, there’s a certain degree of this. I’m not saying it has to be the Masters. It doesn’t have to be Augusta, but there’s a reason we love that to a certain extent and upholding that class that comes with it. I’m all for booing a little bit the other team, you know, in in a playful way. Like, you know, the European teams are announcing like boo, you know what I mean, right? It it’s a boo that shows support for the other team more than anything else. But when it switched to personal attacks and on top of that breaking golf etiquette that should never been allowed where they were starting to yell as he’s in his routine, Rory as he’s about to play and all it did again was add fuel for the other guys. And you saw it in the fire that came out of Rory and out of out of Lowry. Do they it it if anything it didn’t help us, it hurt us. Yeah, I agree. I mean, as much as it pains me for I have a lovehate for Rory, but I’m totally on his side here and I think he handled it so well. The stuff he said in the post in the presser like yesterday, last night, he had he made a good point. He said, “Root for your team. Don’t root against.” Like, and and I get the other side of it. There was nothing for the home crowd to root for because America you United States was playing so poorly. So they just switched their tone to say, you know what, I’m going to go after the villain cuz my heroes aren’t performing. I get that, but keep it kind of classy. I say never go after personal attacks. That’s wild. Boo all you want. Let the guy get his pre-shot routine and take a swing. The minute he strikes the ball, boo him to death, right? Go nuts on him. I don’t care. Whatever. Go nuts on him. People cheering like we heard it like saying, “Hey, you don’t need a button to choke, Rory.” like that type of stuff. But again, they were attacking, you know, Lowry for being overweight, Rory’s wife. Come on now. To a certain extent. And and honest that it carries outside of the sport, the sport that we love, sport that we’re trying to protect. It’s funny. I I was earlier that that morning on on Sunday morning before the matches started, I was at my my kids game and I had people I know don’t watch golf regularly. You know, uh other dads and moms were coming up to me and saying like, “That’s embarrassing. You see what’s happening down there? You see what’s happening? like the cops and it so it made its way beyond the Ryder Cup almost to like more of a cultural awareness that it was an embarrassment that the way that the fans were handling this and I I just don’t think that that’s the look you want. More importantly, what I don’t want to see is it become a cultural trend where now we go back to Ireland in two years and now those crowds feel like they need to le like you know retribution and level up what happened there and then it comes back here and just every year it gets worse and worse until we’re playing the RDER Cup with police lining both sides of the thing just to keep everyone that’s not it like it’s it’s not about that and it it it got it went even further and like as a dad like my eight-year-old saw the Rory’s clip of him telling the crowd to shut the f Yeah. And she was like, “Wow, my what just happened?” Like she was so startled by that, you know, cuz I was And I was like, “Yeah, this is not how it should be.” No, it’s not. And like I said, when it got to that point where we’re hearing these reports that it’s now distracting the US guys where they’re apologizing, be like, you know, that’s not right. And them trying to quiet the crowd. Well, to you, yeah, it was going like this, right? It’s too too far. So, I think there were some unforced errors, things like that. But we also have to talk about this rule, potential rule change that Keegan brought up. Uh, we got quotes from Keegan. We got quotes from Luke Donald. But again, is this something that really can be changed? Should it be changed? And is bringing this up just even a distraction? Before I do that, one thing I will say too, I want to say this too. Rory, I thought it was a touch of class as well after everything he got. I don’t know if you saw some of the pictures of him consoling Keegan’s kids. Yes. Yes. Who who were upset with the loss. That was sport. He shifts like the like barometer for me like quite often. He does things I don’t like, but he quickly comes back and like I love this guy. It bounces back and forth. It really does. All right, let’s take a break there. Do a word from our sponsor and I want to talk about this rule change. All right, cool temperatures are here. We know it. But we’re going to be playing golf until it snows. I mean, we don’t we don’t quit. So, FootJoy, they have us covered for any weather condition. They have the thermoseries for that super cold which is coming up. Tempo series for, you know, if we catch a day where the sun pops out, it gets a little warmer. And then we’ve got hydro series and their incredible rain jackets. In fact, we had our DryJoy Select LX rain jacket, which this thing is topnotch. We added it at Beth Page during the practice day, which was the rain day. Yeah, we got the rain. And let me tell you something, it kept us dry. It is one of the best, if not the best golf jacket on the market. Uh, just wait till you get your hands on this thing. It’s a great gift to buy someone. Uh, but just treat yourself to it. Roll it up, put it in your golf bag. Uh, I don’t think you’ll ever need another one. So, go check out everything that Fjoy has. They are obsessed with golf. Uh, they’ve been doing this for over a hundred years. So, why trust your golf gear to anyone else? Go check out the latest and greatest from Fjoy at Footjoy.com. All right, so the big headline grabber this morning everyone’s talking about is Keegan Bradley talking about the envelope rule. And where this happened and where this came into play was of course we know Victor Havlin injured could not go in the Sunday session. So the way the envelope rule works and this goes back quite a while. It goes back to 1979 that they’ve been using it since. What happens is each captain it places the name of one player in a sealed envelope uh to be opened only if a player on the opposing team is unable to play during singles due to injury. So one player’s name goes in, it’s sealed. So then that way you know that if somebody on the other team cannot play, that’s the guy who sits out. But more importantly, when the when the player on one team withdraws, they take those two guys, they make that the that’s the matchup and then they split the match. Everybody gets a half a point. Yeah. So Keegan, you know, as it came down to that half a point was consequential. Yeah. You could make the argument if they hadn’t had so much trouble and put themselves into such a deficit in the first two days then a half a point shouldn’t have mattered as much as it did but it did matter. So when Keegan was asked about the rule he said yeah it has to change. I have a few ideas but I’m not going to tell you right now. Of course that being in response to like do you know how it should change? He said I mean the rule has to change. I think it’s obvious to everyone in the sports world, in this uh in the sports world, in this room, nothing against Victor, but that rule needs to change by the next RDER Cup. Yeah. So, he’s saying like like that’s just not how it should be. And and again, he didn’t quite tip his hand as to what he thinks the rule should be. I’ll talk about what they do on the women’s side in the Soul Heim Cup in just a second. But then after that session, Luke Donald comes in and he’s asked the same question and when he was asked like should the rule to change and what’s his feeling on the rule and Luke said the rule is the rule and it’s in and it’s been in place for a long time. He even quoted it was used in like the ’90s. Yeah. So he didn’t quite go so far as to say that he felt it needed to be changed. I wonder if it worked against him. He would have had a different attitude. But, you know, I I was in the camp like I got back to my house uh at noon before everything kicked off and I saw 125. I instantly Googled, “How did Europe get a half a point? The match didn’t start.” And then I read that and I instantly went on our Discord and I I just shouted to the guys. I I wrote like, “What do you guys think of this? This makes no sense. If a match is forfeited, why not just lose the full point?” You think about it. Um Harris English versus an injured Victor Havlin would have probably got a point. Well, yeah. I mean, nobody should ever play injured. No one should ever play injured, but if he wasn’t 100% and he just like had like a little like what Harrison Singers could have won that point. It could have been it was 15 13 it could have been 144 maybe things would change. I don’t know. Yeah. And look there was a lot to me the chatter where it went the wrong way as a little conspiracy theorist like we’re saying like hey if they had a lead that was so close they only needed like two points. Could they have just had four guys sit out and take half points? But that’s not really how the rule works. This one guy’s name goes in an envelope. And I also truly believe you guys see what this ma means to these guys. I don’t think anyone wants to win by sitting out. I don’t think anyone wants to lose. They don’t want to sit out. They It’s just not in these guys DNA. I mean, he had an MRI that morning. It was serious. So, it’s serious. It’s not in their DNA to just Yeah, precisely. So, but does the rule make sense and should it be changed? And I think it should. I think that if you forfeit a match, you should you should lose the point. I mean, remember back in Madina, wasn’t Rory almost he was almost late his alarm clock and he would have forfeited the match. I don’t think there would have been a half point. No, no, that would have been a fair but so this is almost like a forfeit due to injury. Seems like the same thing. I think it’s because the injury is kind of outside of these guys control. I think it’s because we don’t have guys like subs. But to a certain extent, you don’t want to have something as damaging as a full point against a guy that’s outside of his control, which is an injury that happens there. It happened, you know, while he was playing the other matches. So, I get that. But my real takeaway here is at the end of the day, both teams know the rule ahead and they’re both playing by the same rule, right? So, I think no matter what is decided, whether it’s a half point, a full point, at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to saying like we know the rules up front. This is what it is. We’re playing by the same rules. No rule is perfect, so live with it. So, for context though, on the women’s side, the Solheim Cup, they do play uh by the uh the idea that a forfeit, you know, based on injury or whatever, the other team is awarded the full point. Mhm. So, I don’t know what Keegan’s going to ultimately suggest. I don’t think it’ll be the idea of having a sub because how could you do that? Like, how how could you have like a bring a 13th guy and have him stay in form and stay warmed up the whole time just be there in case someone gets injured? I I I just don’t see that happening. I know. I I don’t think it’s I think they have to decide whether they want it to be the half point or the full point. And I think really it almost boils down to six in one, half a dozen of the other because they’re both playing by the same rules. I do get though what your point is is is well taken is that if you can’t show up to that match, why do you get even a half a point? That’s a that’s it’s true in a lot of ways. You guys let us know in the comments. What do you think? Half, full point, something else. You’re creative. Let us know. Maybe Keegan will listen. Maybe keep maybe maybe the option is a a a 13th guy who’s just there for the week. That’s what I’m saying like a having fun with the crew going to the party and like hey if I’m tapped I’m tapped if not I’m just living the dream. I don’t know what it’s it is but you you that is a great point. These guys there’s only 12 of them. You can’t control an injury. You can’t. Guy could sleep on his neck wrong at the hotel the night before. What are you going to do? which is why this rule came into effect and why it’s in effect. I just don’t think it’s realistic to have to think that a guy could be there go through everything it takes to be ready to play in the RDER Cup, you know what I mean? And not playing unless someone gets injured. It’s a lot to prepare. It’s a lot. It’s a lot to ask somebody to come along and stuff like that. So, I would do it. There you go. Here’s your volunteer. I’ll be the 13th. You guys let us know what you think about this envelope rule and do you think it will be sorted by the next time or just kind of remain the way it is? Either way, I think it’s a kind of a distraction. I don’t think it’s the main point here. I think the main point and I think the most important takeaway was that we had the privilege of watching what I think what will go down as one of the greatest of all time teams in that European team. I think that they were as as much as the US team valiantly fought back. I think these couple of bad decisions might have put them in a little bit of a hole, but I think that I don’t want any of that to take away from what that European team did. They they every guy on that squad, every single guy played his best golf. And how did you beat that? Yeah. And I think you’ll see the same team again in Ireland. And I think Keegan’s going to play his, you know what, off to get on that team. They’re coming for redemption. I know it’s two years away. We got to wait. But the the the storyline has has now been built, you know, like can we and is Luke Donald going to captain again? He didn’t answer that question, right? You know, everyone keeps asking. He goes and I know he knows the answer to that. The guys want them. They want them. I think the Ryder Cup is becoming something great and um I think ultimately that was a great, you know, result from this. It is. But like I said, that team was it was impressive. It really was. In this episode of The Golf Podcast we’ll break down all the drama and controversy surrounding the latest Ryder Cup and ask the big question — who’s really to blame? Keegan Bradley is already calling for a major rule change after the controversial “envelope rule” cost the U.S. team a crucial half-point, but is this just sour grapes or a legitimate issue the Ryder Cup needs to address before the next match? We’ll also take a hard look at Bradley’s captaincy decisions, from questionable pairings to sticking with struggling players like Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler, and whether those choices ended up gifting Europe momentum. Beyond the captaincy, the fan behavior at Bethpage is also under the microscope after several incidents crossed the line, raising concerns about whether the home crowd actually hurt Team USA instead of helping them. And of course, we’ll discuss the dominance of the European squad — one of the strongest teams ever assembled, with players like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood leading the charge. From data-driven strategy missteps to unforced errors and the ongoing pay-to-play controversy, this episode dives into everything that went wrong for Team USA and what has to change before the next Ryder Cup.

  1. My theory is what ruined the America was Bradley's Trump style dance when winning the opening hole. Karma immediately went into action.

  2. The only time the half-point rule instead of forfeit actually won the cup was for the American side in 1991, so stuff it Bradley. If you feel like changing anything, how about retracting the money payments to the players.

  3. Psychology shows that fear of loss is greater than the joy of winning. So maybe you can get the American ultra-capitalists to perform if they each have to pay a half-million dollar fine for losing.

  4. Dude, you're not even close to the truth.
USA had two 9 hole rounds in 10 days
Europe had 8 rounds in 9 days
    Enough said!
The usa ryder cup committee should be embarrassed. Keegan Bradley should be totally embarrassed.
I could pick the top amateurs in the USA that would have been hungry and ready to show up for the United States of America and out played our primadonna's 😂

I feel sorry for the fans that spent thousands of dollars to come and support our so called team
    I was p*** and embarrassed.
    As a fan
    And as a golfer

  5. Data means nothing – who’d have thought that Hojland would beat Cantlay? Scheffler would play so badly, neither Fleetwood, Mclilroy or Rose would take a point on the last day? Nothing to do with data chaps – get over it, you lost full stop. And putting scotty out on the last day worked didn’t it? He beat Mclilroy?

  6. Harris English versus a fit Victor Hovland – no contest. The Americans would have lost another half point. Sour grapes…

  7. We don’t need finger pointing. Look to the future and address the spectator issues for the next Ryder Cup. Keep it simple folks.

  8. Lets put it this way. I will not be watching the ryder cup again. Not my scene. Love golf but you can forget the ryder cup. Disgusting behaviour.

  9. The new rumor is team USA 🇺🇸 played one practice day for nine holes in the eleven days prior to Ryder Cup at Beth page. I would like a count of how many practice rounds did each USA player play at Beth page.

  10. The Americans are very very talented INDIVIDUALS! The EU TEAM left their egos in Luke Donald's locker, played together as TEAM! THE BEST TEAM WON!
Re FANS, get the real golf fans to snap vid's/pics of the crappy ppl and upload to CRAPPY PPL file. Then use facial recognition and ban those who misbehave. Amen!

  11. The American team i blame partly as they should have supported the Europeans by objecting to those disgusting chants. They could have just stopped playing. Golf is closer to an audience and they should respect the game and the people watching.

  12. Bullshit….AIM360 didn't help US Ryder Cup golfers in their puts. It's just marketing hype.

  13. Ryder Cup 2025 just demonstrate how low US golf have come down to. If the home players can't match and beat their peers get the home supporters to intimidate and bully them. Well sad story..both don't work in your favor. The visitors…they are that good. Their mental strength is awesome.

  14. Just maybe in modern day golf the Americans aren’t as good in team match play unless it’s the meaningless President’s cup. The international team in that are from continents nowhere close to each other so it’s even harder to get a close knit team. The US have no excuses no matter how hard they try to make them.

  15. The Yanks are disgusting people. Way over the top with there vile abuse. If I was Mcolroy I wouldn't play again in America 0:00

  16. From maga. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. The European suck they cheated. Everyone knows say cheated🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  17. Why won’t anyone just point the finger at the US supper star just not play well enough?
Sorry, the top players just need to show up! Nothing else to talk anout

  18. KICK OUT AMERICA YES LETS HAVE OUR OWN WE DO NOT WANT CHEATS LOUTS CONS BEING ANYWHERE NEAR US AND TRUMPS GOLF COURSES SEIZE THEM IN EUROPE , BUT MORE INPORTANTLY ANY PLAYER FROM EUROPE SHOULD UP AND LEAVE THE US , AND ANY COMPS THEREIN PASS ON AND LIKEWISE EUROPE NO AMERICAN SHOULD BE PERMITTED ENTRY INTO OUR COMPS OUR COUNTRIES, WE HAVE ENOUGH GOOD SOON IF NOT NOW GREAT PLAYERS , . OK WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST ??? WELL LIKE MICHELSON HE A WHILE BACK CLAIMED HE NEW HE WOULD INCUR A TWO SHOT PENALTY, FOR PLAYING THE BALL BEFORE AT REST THREE TIMES AND AS IT WAS AMERICA THE USGA PERMITTED HIM TO PLAY THE NEXT DAY AGAIN THEY ARE AT FAULT MICHELSON SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISQUALIFIED, THE CHINESE LADY AS I RECALL DID SOMETHING NOT THAT BAD BUT AS SHE SIGNED HER CARD 7 STROKES WERE ADDED THEN A DISQUALIFICATION.

  19. Paul Azinger developed the POD System and it worked and has not been used since PA was the captain. The PGA Tour of America is the one responsible for allowing the teams to be put together without using the POD system. BTW, the Europeans have recently been using a system to select their team and playing partners similar to the POD System.
