ADAIRSVILLE, GA  — Barnsley Resort is excited to announce the debut of The Merger, a new 18-hole Himalayas putting course designed by Bergin Golf Designs of Atlanta. Located adjacent to the resort’sacclaimed Jim Fazio-designed course, this exhilarating format adds an accessible and playful new dimension to Barnsley’s celebrated golf offerings.

Inspired by the legendary St Andrew’s Ladies Putting Club, The Merger embraces the game’s social and laid-back side. Positioned between the pool area and the lake in front of the Woodlands Clubhouse, the long, narrow layoutnaturally lends itself to an “out and back” routing of holes. With its artful contours and flexible setup, the course offers endless configurations for golfers and non-golfers alike.

“I suggested the name The Merger because this course is all about bringing people together,” said Bill Bergin, Principal Architect of Bergin Golf Designs. “It’s a natural gathering place—whether for weddings, businessoutings, or simply friends spending time before or after a round of golf. Barnsley itself fosters connection, andthis course simply extends that spirit.”

The Himalayas-style putting course is designed to be approachable and fun for players of all levels, from seasonedgolfers to first-timers. Its expansive greens and playful undulations make it a welcoming and inclusive space.

“Golf can feel intimidating if you don’t already play, and it’s a hard game to just pick up,” added Bergin. “That’s why we created a space where both golfers and non-golfers can laugh, play, and have fun without pressure. It’s a place where anyone—especially kids and beginners—can have a quality experience, build confidence, and leave saying, ‘I want to do that again’.’”

Since acquiring Barnsley Resort in 2022, South Street Partners – the team behind some of the most esteemed and thoughtfully developed private residential club and resort communities in the United States, including Palmetto Bluff and Kiawah Island – has embarked on an ambitious renovation plan for the 140-room property, investing $16M over the past year to elevate and redefine the guest experience. Among the most notable enhancements have been the Fall 2025 opening of Jules, the property’s new signature restaurant helmed by celebrated Chef Shaun Doty; thecomplete remodel of the 85 cottage suites by Charlotte Lucas Design; the addition of a second family pool with lazy river; six new pickleball courts; the introduction of the open-air Biergarten; extensive upgrades to the Beretta Shooting Grounds; and a complete renovation of the saltwater resort pool.

These investments also build on Barnsley’s long-standing reputation as a premier golf destination, anchored by its Jim Fazio-designed course, which boasts 378 acres of championship golf surrounded by breathtaking mountainscenery. The addition of The Merger reflects a growing trend in resort golf nationwide, offering more accessible, social, and flexible golf experiences for players of all levels. Increasingly popular at top golf destinations, putting courses invite guests to enjoy the game in a more casual and inclusive way, whether as a warm-up to a full round or simply a fun, shared activity for families and groups.

“We are thrilled about these exciting projects, which will propel the resort to an entirely new level,” said David Friederich, President of Barnsley Resort. “Barnsley Resort is known for many things; a renowned Fazio golf course, the Beretta Shooting Grounds, elevated Southern cuisine, and adventure around every turn, but mostimportantly, as a destination to enjoy with loved ones and create cherished memories. These enhancements create new experiences for resort members and guests, while introducing Barnsley to a new generation of travelers.”

The addition of The Merger further strengthens Barnsley Resort’s reputation as a destination where recreation and relaxation intersect seamlessly—and where the game of golf can be enjoyed by everyone.
