(NewsNation) — Divorce can be expensive, but particularly so if you’re a celebrity.
With Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding possibly happening next year, there has been a lot of chatter on if they will sign a prenuptial agreement since she is, after all, worth $1.6 billion.
Conversations about prenups, which are legal contracts signed before a couple gets married, can be awkward, but often necessary to protect money and assets, as well as other important issues in a relationship, like infidelity.
“Don’t be afraid to put it all in writing to refer back to as a living, breathing document,” Handel Group co-president and life coach Laurie Gerber told Business Insider. “And plan to have meetings about how you are running your marriage and family just as you would for your company or any other project you care about profoundly.”

Prenuptial agreements are recognized in every state, but each state offers different levels of protection.
California, for example, has a community property law where a 50/50 split is standard for a couple’s marital estate.
While some celebrities and influential figures have not signed prenups (see Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott), others have, with some former spouses walking away with substantial sums.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s shocking split in September left many fans wondering what led to the couple splitting after 19 years together.
The pair got married in June 2006, and their prenup stipulated that if Urban, who has been open about his past drug and alcohol abuse, started drinking and taking drugs again, he would go to rehab.
The pair waived spousal and child support and will retain their own assets. By the time Kidman filed for divorce, a custody agreement was already worked out, including a parenting plan, a child support worksheet as well as taking co-parenting classes.

Rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian wed in 2014, but not before signing a prenup that kept their assets separate, according to Business Insider.
A divorce agreement was reached between the two in 2022, where West was ordered to pay the SKIMS founder $200,000 a month in child support.
Kardashian and West share four kids together: North, 12; Saint, 10; Chicago, 7; and Psalm, 6.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez finally got married in 2022, 20 years after they ended their engagement.
The “All I Have” singer and the “Argo” director did not sign a prenup, according to People magazine. After two years of marriage, “Bennifer” separated.

Despite the lack of a prenup, the famous exes kept their respective assets and income they earned during the marriage.
They both waived spousal support, the Associated Press reported.

Months after a cheating scandal rocked Tiger Woods’ marriage and career, he and his then-wife Elin Nordegren decided to end their marriage after six years together.
Nordegren walked away with $100 million, which was reportedly tens of millions more than she would have earned if not for them negotiating their prenup after news broke that Woods was having multiple affairs, according to ABA Journal.

Their divorce was finalized in 2024, but not before Baumgartner challenged the prenup, alleging she did not understand what was in it, according to TMZ.
A judge validated the prenuptial agreement, with Baumgartner receiving nearly $1.5 million.
