Annual Lights of Jesus planned Dec. 20 in Golf Course Acres

It is time for the annual Lights for Jesus luminary event in Golf Course Acres. The event will be held December 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until 11 p.m.
Five thousand luminaries will line the streets in the Golf Course Acres subdivision. Cars will enter from G Street onto Sabine and follow the lighted pathway through the neighborhood. Golf Course Acres is located behind Happy Valley Motors in the west end of Elizabethton. GPS can be set to Sabine Street, Elizabethton, to enter the subdivision.
A total of 150 homes participate in the annual celebration, for which this is the 47th year. The celebration began as a project to celebrate Jesus’ birthday by the Golf Course Acres Children’s Bible Club. Now, there are four generations of candle lighters, and several of the former Bible Club members and their children take part in the lighting. The residents have been diligent to continue the special event through the years.
The residents make and display the luminaries and decorate their homes for the event. Twelve block leaders take the orders and distribute supplies to the neighbors. The luminary is made with an eight-pound white paper bag, a ten-hour votive and two cups of sand.
The public is invited to drive through the neighborhood to enjoy the Lights for Jesus on Saturday, Dec. 19.
