David Carey’s hopes of winning a PGA Tour card are in tatters after he opened the final stage of Q-School with a demoralising round of 77 in Florida.

Carey lies in a share of 171st place on seven-over. His chances of clinching one of the five PGA Tour cards available suffered a killer blow as he is thirteen shots off the lead and eleven off the top five.

Despite there being no cut, the 29-year-old Dubliner can’t afford any more mistakes if he is to salvage a top-45 finish which would guarantee a full Korn Ferry Tour card.

Carey is eight shots off that mark.

Funnily, he started his opening round at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass well with an early birdie on the 12th as he played the course from back to front.

He dropped shots on 14 and 17 but his chances of reaching the PGA Tour were already all but over when he quadruple bogeyed the 18th after finding the penalty area twice.

He did birdie the par-5 1st, but errors struck again as he double bogeyed the third and bogeyed the sixth to bring the curtain down on a very disappointing day which saw him hit just five fairways and ten greens in regulation.

At the very least by just competing in the final stage, Carey has secured PGA Tour Americas status and a conditional card for the Korn Ferry Tour next year.
