SHORT-First‑Putt Ladder Drill: Turn 38‑Foot Putts Into Tap‑Ins-John Hughes Golf

John Hughes 0:00
Let’s eliminate three putts by absolutely understanding distance control
of your first putt. Set up a ladder drill from where you have your average putt length, first
putt length on the course for 20 handicappers, that’s around 38 feet. But let’s hit putts so they
get to the hole and or from different distances. This is a six foot increment here. That was 24
feet. Here’s 30. We need to make sure that the putt gets to the hole and stays within 12 inches
of that so you can eliminate your three putts. I bet you don’t practice these putts enough for
it to make a difference for you you want to improve your putting, you need to do the ladder
drill from your average first putt length.

The quickest way to eliminate three-putts is to control your distances, not obsess over line. In this short video I show you my First Putt Ladder Drill, starting from the real distances you actually face on the course—around 18, 24, 30, 36, and 42 feet—so you can leave more tap-ins and prevent 3-putts.

Instead of grinding on 3-footers, you’ll see how I randomize longer putts, focus only on speed, and train myself to get the ball to the hole without rolling it past the flagstick. If you can consistently finish inside about 12 inches, you’ll tap in all day and immediately lower your scores.
