COURSE TOUR: Catalina Island Golf Course

hi I’m syvia the golfer and today we are in Avalon California which is home to Catalina Island we are visiting Catalina Island Golf Course let’s check it out taking the ferry to Catalina Island is a trip that is long overdue one fun fact about me is that I actually lived in Los Angeles for about 10 years before I moved back to my hometown of Nashville Tennessee I always always wanted to go to Catalina Island but I just never made it a real priority so this trip is so overdue in such a long time coming if you’re in Los Angeles there are a few ways to get to Catalina Island I chose the Catalina Express which left out of the port in San Pedro our Ferry left about 7:30 a.m. and took about an hour and 15 minutes to get to Avalon where Catalina Island Golf Course is located the ride on the ferry was such a cool experience and was a great way to start the trip it really added a journey type of vibe to this entire day as we approached Catalina I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was this just made me more eager to get off that boat and check it out [Music] once you’re on the island there are taxis available to take you anywhere you want to go but I opted to walk to the golf course because it wasn’t that far I would say it took about 10 to 15 minutes to walk from the fairy dock to the Pro Shop [Music] first up is the golf pro shop which was packed with everything you would need to play around of golf pool cart rentals golf accessories apparel including golf club rentals I actually rented golf clubs because I didn’t want the hassle of bringing my own I’ve never flown with golf clubs before and I didn’t want to take the chance of losing them [Music] before I play a round of golf I always have to warm up and I generally like to start with my putting first if I can so I walked over to the practice putting green which is located right across the street from the Pro Shop this putting green is a little on the smaller side but it got the job done so no complaints for me [Music] after being on the ferry I noticed that my body started to feel a little bit tight so I wanted to take the opportunity to warm up a little bit more and go and work on my full swing one thing to note is that there isn’t a traditional driving range here they do however have two driving Nets available which to me more than got the job done Catalina Island country club and golf course is the oldest operating course west of the Mississippi and the former home of the Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament you guys the first hole which is right across from the Pro Shop really sets the stage because you are about 50 ft or so above the Fairway you’re literally hitting the ball across the street below I was so nervous oh wait hold on I’m nervous I’m nervous okay hold on it’s a long way that’s a long drive nice oh good was good siia y driving to the Fairway was interesting to say the least I was honestly just happy that my ball made it across the street and onto the Fairway and didn’t hit a car where mine is I have no clue um all right let’s do it yay I don’t know where it went but I just know it’s it’s up there originally built in 1892 as a three hole course this Scenic 2100 yard course now offers nine challenging hes with two sets of te’s for 18 ho play ah it’s up there [Music] though the course was expanded to nine holes in the early 1900s and to an 18 hole Tournament level course in 1929 after World War II in 1945 the course was brought back to its current nine-hole layout featuring five par fours and four par 3s same spot I’ll play it from there o wait bloopers oh that’s too far too much too much Catalina Island Golf Course is a public course that feels like a private Resort so surrounded by Canyons this course felt so tucked away I truly felt like I was playing golf in like a jungle it was so exotic the views were spectacular and got better and better the more I played this is my five wood so who knows whether this is going to work or a playing with rental clubs let’s see if we can it’s a good shot okay I know what I’m doing [Music] sometimes it sounded good it went far too all right get my wedge pitching wedge and bring my putter to all right I got to work on distance control Sylvia distance control I don’t know what that [Laughter] was put it out not bad not bad not bad oh that so close I was robbed I was robbed it’s on the green hit the net but bounced onto the Fairway we are in play ladies and [Music] gentlemen see if this fivewood is going to be on point today nope this [Laughter] way at least it went that way can’t ask much but going straight let’s go he there we go [Laughter] woo nice ho five Par Four I got to work on my follow through okay that one’s straight there we go probably in the bunker too I’ll take it I was doing so good with my wedges yesterday today it’s like it’s like I ain’t never held a a wedge in my life I don’t know what’s happening okay there we go little too hard but what stop stop stop stop all right well we made it over the bunker though so the course is a mixture of Challenge and easy almost kind of alternating which really kept me on my toes the small greens and deep bunkers are enough to challenge any golfer especially a beginner golfer like me one thing I realized while playing is that you don’t need much of a long game to play this course just make sure you bring your short game the course itself felt fairly narrow but the greens were very soft and in good shape the fairways were in decent shape as well straight good heck yeah right in the bunker but no it’s short of the bunker short of the bunker we will take it yes we will take it we will take it the pace of play depends on skill level however the average golfer plays this course in about less than 2 hours which is about the time it took for us to get through this course the course wasn’t busy during our tea time so it felt as though we had the place to ourselves which made our time here even more relaxing this was the perfect course to hone in on my short game that’s for sure it was fun but had a variety of challenges to test my skill set [Music] oh my gosh fourth time today fourth time today ho eight Par Four all right I don’t even know where that [Laughter] went don’t know it went over the hill though so we’ll we’ll go find it oh my hold on okay oh let’s focus hold I got it I got it I got yeah [Laughter] don’t make me laugh I like my these are like the loudest bird or owls whatever this is ah that just rolled the bird owls are trying to take me down they won’t let me be great all I hear is woohoo hooo they keep hooting in my back swing see if we uh can actually hit our wedge properly right now come on baby absolutely not I know what I’m doing when I go back home I’m practicing chipping and putting for like 40 hours cuz I don’t know what the hell is going on today all right ho number nine last one straight in oh no bounce out of the bunker pretty good that was if you’re the kind of golfer that likes to plan ahead this course actually allows you to book your tea time up to one month in advance which for someone like me was perfect because I like to plan and solidify my plans way ahead of time Catalina Island Golf Course is most definitely a hidden gym I’m so happy I got to play on a course that has so much history so if you are an Explorer like me and you love to play golf make sure you check it out you will not regret it Cina Island golf course it’s been real since we were short on time we decided to head back to the fairy dock to grab a quick bite to eat the golf course didn’t have ocean views but the restaurant definitely did and it was just what I needed you can’t be on an island and not try some fresh fish so I opted for the fish tacos and they did not [Music] disappoint good food with a glass of wine on the beach was the perfect way to end a round of golf and that’s it until next time thanks for watching [Music]
