Did Rory McIlroy Hit the Wrong Ball? ⛳️😳 | Sports Illustrated
https://www.youtube.com/@SportsIllustrated
Oh my god. Pretty interesting situation for Rory on the 11th. It’s never happened to me before. He hits his T-shot into the rough and as he’s playing his second shot, somehow a second ball pops up. Yeah, it was very strange. After taking a closer look, you can see that he was playing his proper ball, but somewhere underneath that, he unearthed and dislodged a second ball. Something old, still caked with mud. But questions started arising across social media. Should he be penalized for hitting the wrong ball? And the answer is no. Essentially, the way the wrong ball rule is outlined is defined by intention. Meaning, if Rory found a different ball, tried to play it, and it wasn’t his own, well, then that’s a wrong ball. But the fact that Rory found his ball, stepped up to hit his ball, and happened to dislodge and unear a second ball that he was unaware of, doesn’t fall into the wrong ball rule. Now, let’s say hypothetically that ball was in play, like it was, for example, another player’s ball. Even still, as long as his intentions are to play his proper ball, that doesn’t fall into the wrong ball rule. Even though the situation’s weird, especially after all the controversy that Shane Lowry had with his ball last night, Rory’s in the clear and there is no penalty stroke necessary. It could never happen on any other course but a Lynx course as well. you know, when the rough’s all matted down and balls get, you know, so yeah, it was very strange.
