This is my home course. It’s supposed to be open for 2026 but after that it’s probably gone. I’m not sure where I’m going to go and how are the public courses in this area going to absorb the thousands of rounds that are played at DH annually.

This is happening in Toronto too, except it’s not a muni but a private course.

    https://toronto.citynews.ca/2025/11/25/city-of-toronto-trca-fighting-against-flemingdon-park-development-in-a-ravine/

I really like the course, it’s close to my place so I can get a quick 9 in before work. The proposal itself is a little suspect cause even the city says it the grade is too steep.

In Toronto we have 5 munis and 3 of them are by ravines so the flood risk is huge. Don’t think they’ll ever close. But I see both sides of the story. As a golfer I like being able to play somewhere close and not have to drive 1 hour. The city is short of housing (as most big cities are) so I do think they should build where they can.

It sucks that we lose a course but needs of the few right?

Here in Midland we lost 3 in the past year!

This isn’t progress, it’s regress. I get it, golf courses can do more to beat their own demons. Better herbicides and pesticides. More greenspace. The biggest war against golf courses is that they’re just taking up housing space, they’re not green enough, and they’re not parks. People don’t understand (especially your average redditor):

Recreation for many is not just video games and the internet
Many friendships, lasting friendships, are built and maintained on the course
Courses, especially watery ones, are vital to the ecosystem of waterfowl
Sure they’re not concrete postmodern eyesores. But they’re a valuable commodity to a community in terms of revenue, recreation, crime reduction, public health, and property values.

Imagine living next to a quiet public golf course for decades and then it gets sold to become a data center. Sounds like hell for the nearby homeowners. I’m surprised they aren’t already suing to block the sale

If there is a better use of the land, raze that course

Here in central pa they’re dropping like flies… lost one towards Gettysburg thus year to farmland and one near harrisburg to a data center after next year. We’ve also had one drop to a 9 hole for development and another to build a hospital… a couple others are in danger too.

    They spelled ‘Profits” wrong.

  10. warneagle

if you want to sell a golf course to build like, housing or a park or something, then sure.

a data center? fuck all the way off.

Staring down at you all from Wisconsin.

Our local muni got sold a few years back and the buyer closed it and then tried to turn the land (which is bordered by several farms and multimillion dollar properties and homes) into an industrial park with special direct interstate access and the zoning board voted him down thanks to the neighbors having the money and power to fight him.

But the course remains closed indefinitely with no plans to reopen as a golf course and last I heard he was looking to subdivide it into lots and make a home development. I’m not sure if that will go better for him either – he really pissed off the neighbors with that last plan.🤦🏻

The big problem was that before Covid most of these courses were in the red for years. Now, if someone makes an offer for a lot of money it’s a no brainer from a business standpoint. It’s sad but it’s reality.

  14. RoostasTowel

The course Canada used for the Canadian open got sold off for condos a few years ago.

In Vancouver they sometimes try and peel away parts of the muni courses. But the parks board always slaps them down.

Now they are trying to end the parks board…

Played here once, conditions were pretty good. I work at a course about 20ish miles from there and I expect a few of those guys will be coming to my course when it closes down. I don’t expect they’ll stay but the options in this area are slowly thinning out. Parline closed awhile ago, Evergreen just shutdown, and the news of DH selling broke before that. I’m worried that as the game grows the courses will continue to close down and we’ll all be packed in like sardines on whatever is left.

So in my area there was a 27 hole layout that they ended up selling, converted it to 18 and sold the remaining land for homes and the course I go to in winter to hit golf balls at for their driving range is due to be converted to more homes at the end of 2026.

  17. aceattorneymvp

Well, all of the “shrink the game” folks should be pleased.

  18. LittleLordFuckleroy1

Tearing down a beloved golf course to make room for AI datacenters is an infuriatingly accurate microcosm of what’s happening at a large scale right now.

  19. SomeSamples

Yeah, land is worth way more than golf revenue. In the not too distant future golf at an actual course will be only a rich person’s activity. Us common folks will have to just go to simulators or the range.
