To me, it’s a game that’s been destroyed is my opinion. You know, the technology, the forgiveness of the drivers. Yeah. The heel, it still goes 280, 300 or whatever. I mean, you hit a Pimminard, it went 200, 220. Well, we’re just looking at our story then Billy said my story looks like Sevy’s garage really, but the all these clubs and everything, but the ball doesn’t move like it used to do. I mean, one of the best ball strikers I’ve ever come across was Ian Wen, but you know, it’ be a back right pin and needed it middle of the green with a five iron with a 10 yard cut and cut a shot in there to like two for it with golf on another level. The trajectory of the ball and everything was fantastic. The shot making skills were great and and now all these lads now just all bomb 300 to 350. Don’t they just tear it up, leather it, don’t move. It’s just, you know, drive a five iron, sit your cutting shots in and now drive wedges. He sees but out still

This makes me want to pick up a set of woodies and ping eye 2s and get rid of my new clubs. I don't want to be apart of the yuppies with new technology now. Lol
Old washed up players always hate on the evolution of a sport
Just make the tour courses longer then
Make the tour pros play with persimmons, then. Stop trying to screw things up for the rest of us.
Is this bloke shooting 65 each round with his new sticks is he
Billy knows golf, modern technology is ridiculous.
It's not the clubs folks, it's the ball. Bring back the Balata and see how far it goes….
I am 76 yrs old, the new equipment is great. Its only the top 30 in each tournament are shooting 5 under or better. I dont care if shooting 18 under wins it. High school kids break 4 min mile now. World record is 3.:43 now. Nobody screaming. Let tech rip. Like Jordan Spieth said,"Go Hard".
lol this sounds like my grandpa who says basketball got worse when they started to let them dunk
He’s probably correct about the top pros but the forgiveness etc has probably been massively beneficial for most normal players and brought/kept players in the game.
The scores haven't come down for average golfers though . Their short game hasn't improved. And to be fair the tour pros are playing courses of 7500 yards plus with thick rough left and right . The ball makes the biggest difference now as Billy says .
For club golfers handicaps haven't really come down because our short game and putting hasn't improved, modern pros play target golf the finesse has gone but they play the game they have to with the equipment that is allowed it's not their fault.
If i had the technology of the past i may well have given up before i started, its brought new blood into the game, making golf courses more financially competent and figure positive. Golf was dying and now it’s booming.
Everyone benefits, from players/businesses/golf pros.
I’m obsessed with golf, love playing it. But watching it on tv, my god it’s mind numbingly tedious
Couldn't agree more…..billion dollar industry has destroyed golf. Used to be everyone could win with talent…not anymore. Pro golf is shit, just boring shit. Want to make it better again, ban 90% of clubs and make pros play blades and maxs 360cc heads
Jack won 18 majors and came second in more and mostly used Persimmon woods.
I play with Persimmin woods , if you get it we'll on a low trajectory it runs out well.
He's right. It's turned into a long drive contest.
Think he has persimmons in the bag? He must after this nonsense, right? What do modern golfers do after bombing it? Do they not ever hit it to 2 feet?
I definitely see his point, but the game is still plenty difficult for most of us. Maybe there’s adjustments they can make to the pro game to make it more difficult.
But the brands love the pros playing clubs that they sell to all of us. So limiting club performance isn’t really an option. Ball is another idea, but I imagine similar issues with manufacturers.
I agree completely! To hit the ball close you HAD to be able to hit fades and draws, low spinners and high floaters, etc. I miss 'that' golf. The ball is #1 and overly forgiving/trampoline drivers(and fairway woods) are #2.
Rick getting a bonk on over him saying his store room looks like seves garage.
It's a shortsighted view. Yes, the club technology has made a massive difference, but our understanding of biomechanics and being able to reliably teach an optimized swing, along with instant videos, feedback and launch monitors have a huge amount to do with it.
Combine that with modern gym and training methods and it's a different game.
I remember Sam Torrence walking around the course with a beer and a cigar. John Daly was arguably the most talented natural golfer ever, but didn't have the attitude needed for the modern game… there's a reason you don't see pros doing that now, but hitting the gym instead.
If you could go back in time and give Nicklaus or Palmer a modern driver they're not suddenly going to be hitting massive 340 yard drives.
It's not the plane, Mav, it's the pilot.
Give a pro a season with persimmon woods and all the modern training aids and they'll still be bombing it 300+ yards.
An amateur? Not so much.
Well said billy !!!!
So true and the ball is the key
Give em all a bag of Walmarts finest clubs and a box of top flites. Even the playing field. That would bring the spirit and skill back
It’s more the ball then the clubs, for your average golfer they need the technology the game is very difficult, but at the top pro game they need to roll back the ball
💯
Utter balls . The game is just as difficult and everyone has the same access to the same equipment. I've been playing for 40 years and I've been the same 5 handicap for 35 of them . The pros are monsters now and we love it .😊
Absolutely Billy
It's lost its charm and finesse completely.
🥱🥱 boring. All men his age say "My favourite sports been running because…." its boring. The games moved on. Also golfers have moved on. The training, the sports science. You give a pro an old bag, let them get used to it. Im sure they'd still be out driving rhe old pros.
There is truth in what he is saying ! Just a social golfer so not in the fold and so should not be too dogmatic – but I sense he is on to something ?
Agree with everything that Billy says and have been saying this on my Golf talks for years!(Usually to agreement and applause!)
Am even more “old school “ than my pal Billy, caddying on tour since 1972 when the average drive was 260 yards!
To me,the golf ball has more to answer for but the demise of Persimmon did make a massive difference!
Also agree about “Woosie” ball striker!
Breaking News: Old man thinks things were better "back in his day" 🥱
Agreed. That's why Miller, Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Seve, Watson were ALL better than golfers today. They had to use finesse, guile, to adapt. I play with golfers more powerful than me they off the tee 260+ yards, they win, I lose. No competition anymore.
so what im hearing is he wants less of us everyday people playing golf because modern clubs make it to "easy"
I've never bombed it 350, greatest drive I've hit was 290 with roll out and down hill lol
