CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Tar Heel men’s golf and swimming & diving programs recently participated in purchasing items for the “Share Your Holiday” initiative, coordinated by the Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center.

For more than 45 years, Share Your Holiday has supported low-income families, the disabled and elderly during the holidays.

The men’s golf team spent their evening shopping at Target, while the swimming & diving members went to Walmart.

“This was a really fun experience,” senior men’s golfer Keaton Vo said. “We are at a good point in our season where we have a little bit more down time, so us being able to come together and shop for a special someone is pretty amazing. Being able to give back to our community is something really near and dear to our hearts. We are really happy to be here.”

Social workers refer families that need extra support during the holiday season. The organization then works to match individuals and groups that are interested in helping by donating new gifts to those families.

“It means the world to me and my teammates to be able to put a smile on anyone’s face,” Vo added. “We are super happy to do this and hope that whoever gets these gifts are excited.”

“My favorite part about being able to give back to the community with my team is just seeing everyone come together, while giving back to people in our local area,” women’s swimmer Michaela Chokureva said. “I love the fact that we are making someone’s holiday season brighter. Being able for them to wake up and have gifts under the tree is just something that I love to give back for.”
