[Applause] Hit the lights. Texas. Texas. Texas. Texas. Legacy just means being part of something that’s really special, and that’s Texas athletics. The many Texas Longhorns, part of that long legacy of Texas golfers that we’ve seen stretches all the way back to Ben Crunchaw, Tom Kite. We’re a leader in college golf. We take on that responsibility. Jordan Spe of course starred there in college. So did Scotty Sheffller. This new breed of powerhouse is quite something. They want to leave their mark on this game. Top to bottom, we have the most depth that we’ve ever had. And we’re going to be right there at the end. God willing. I’m hoping that we’re holding that trophy at the end. [Applause] Hook them on three. 1 2 3. Howdy. I started August 1st, 1997. I can remember being interviewed for this job at Barton Creek and downtown and they put us up in a really nice hotel downtown and my wife opened up the curtains and looked out over Lake Austin and she said, “You may not want to come here, but I’m coming. There’s no two ways about it if they offer you the job.” And they did. and I’ve been here 29 years now. That’ll work. Feels like it’s right, but it’s fine. We’ve been in a constant build of our program. We’ve been in the business of building a facility, the University of Texas Golf Club. That happened in 2003. As of today, Texas Golf is 99 years old. In that time, there’s been 112 victories on the PGA Tour. There is 12 majors with six different major champions. And since we opened the doors at UT Golf Club, there’s been 38 victories on the PGA Tour by five different guys. So, Texas Golf, I don’t know that there’s anything else like it to be quite honest with you. Jordan Spa, Scotty Sheffler, Tom Kite. Those four names in itself are great. The coach that comes to mind is John Fields. And he’s been here a long time. Probably going to go down as one of the best college golf coaches of all time. He’s had a crazy long legacy at University of Texas and he’s done an amazing job with this program and he’s gotten players to a place where I want to be. you can trust his opinion. Like he’s brought up some great players. He’s won a couple national championships. He cares so much about the program and each of us. He’s invested so much time in us and he wants to to see us succeed. We don’t want to just get you the PJ tour. We want you to have a career. Everything we do, morning, all day long, and when we go to bed, we’re thinking about that. We have three guys in PGA Tour University, top 10 coming out. Christian Moss, Tommy Morrison, and Luke Potter. That’s a big responsibility for those guys. Christian Moss is just born a golfer. I He’s got incredible god-given ability, talent, got great hands, got a great feel for the game, and he’s really good with trouble shots. There’s one of those things where you just don’t know where it came from. When he’s in trouble, he kind of reminds me a little bit of Sevy because his creativity is so strong and his ability to pull off shots is amazing. Tommy has been 6’9 almost as long as I’ve known him since 8th grade. Everything kind of added up that he was going to be a really good player. And now that he’s been here, he definitely has grown as a player. I certainly don’t think he’s hit a zenith. I think he might be the new Big Easy. We’ll see. Luke Potter is like a he’s a unicorn. He transferred from Arizona State, had a great high school career, junior golf career, metriculating into being a really fine player. I’ll compare this guy to to another guy that I know, Ben Krenshaw. In high school, Ben Krenshaw was the cool guy in college. Ben Krenshaw was the cool guy when he was on the PGA Tour. He was the cool guy. Luke Potter is the cool guy. He walks the walk. He has his own incredible mannerisms. And I’m just praying that his talent really manifests itself this year. If it does, we’re going to be really, really hard to beat. PGA Tour University is a gift to college golf. allowing these kids to earn the opportunity to compete either on the PGA tour, the corn ferry tour, or the Americas tour is substantial because it’s a path into success right away. Probably the most important responsibility for them is to stay focused and play one shot at a time because the moment you try to hang on to what you got, that’s when you’re going to lose what you have. Hey, MTV. This is our crib. Come check it out. [Music] I live with Tommy Morrison and Luke Potter. Want a blueberry? No, they’re good, dude. They’re they’re firmer this time. This is the neatest room in the house. I’m more of a clean freak than the other two are. Like, they can leave stuff everywhere and just not have a care in the world. He also claims he’s going to clean last. I will. Life could be worse. You could be cleaning your own dishes. Now you want to be a But Christian does it. Have y’all been up to his loft yet? I mean, they haven’t even been invited up there. I don’t know if it’s like really proper to send them up. Y’all should show the difference in like cleanliness of each room. I keep it clean, dude. I keep it neat. It was just Christian and I for a while. And then when Luke transferred, I think it everyone was kind of full, but we have like a loft in our apartment. It’s not really supposed to be a bedroom, but we made it into a bedroom for him. If you look up there, that’s my room. We’re not going to go up there cuz it’s under construction. He calls it the crow’s nest. Yeah, it’s kind of a disaster up there. Mos, go hit a couple clanks off the mat. Hey, [Laughter] Daniel should hit the chip. Daniel’s the one. Hey. Yeah. We’re going to have chicken chip come. Here we go. First hole right here. Pretty good. [Music] One up. They’ve been great. I’ve known them since junior golf. Christian’s always doing something around the house. Whether it’s cleaning or chipping or watching Tiger Woods or or yelling at me, there’s always something fun going on in Christian’s world. I’ve never laughed so much in my life living with those two of all the dumb stuff they’ve done. Oh, no shot. You got that through dumb stuff they want to do. If we want more green, we can build. Yeah, if we want to extend the green, we can When’s the renovation dot? Oh. If you look to your left here, we got the the SEC freshman of the year. National freshman of the year, I’m sorry. Working on his putting per usual. Daniel Bennett, he’s probably had one of the bumpier rides getting to Texas. But when he came here, he became the NCAA Freshman of the Year and first team all-American. He had always said from the beginning that every South African that has come to Texas has been number one amateur in the country. You know, we’ve had Christian Moss now on our team. We had Brandon Stone on our team and we’ve had Dylan Fertelli on our team. All from South Africa. And I told him simply, if I’m going to recruit you, you you need to be the number one amateur in South Africa. You need to be the number one junior. He told me if I was able to do that, then we’d be able to make a plan for me to come. There was obviously a couple fairly big tournaments that I’d won in South Africa. The one event in particular, the South African boys under 19, I’d won by 21 shots and then got to number one amateur in South Africa. And that was the event that basically the night after I’d won, he called and said, “Would you like to come to Texas?” I was kind of shocked, but yeah, I I’d immediately said yes. We’re thrilled that he became the number one junior and number one amateur in South Africa. Come on, Danny. Oh, not even close, Stevie. It’s a home course advantage. Yeah, you’re not a member yet. We almost had four in a row. Daniel Bur almost won Fidian. You’ll get there, kid. And David for Can you give me my trophy, please? No. I’m going to have my moment in the sun. I actually took Potter’s uh trophy from the tournament he won, so I got to give it back. I won a golf tournament. I uh carried Moss, bro. I’m the other only other one that’s underpar on that thing. Nice one. Luke Potter, champion of the hate collegiate. Hook up. Come follow me. We got the boys playing some Mario Kart. Tommy’s probably going to win cuz he’s way better than Christian. Oh my god. Oh, here comes Moss. I’m about to screw this up. Stop it. Oh my god. I missed the thunder cuz I was in the zone. I fell right in the middle of that. Hey, can’t do that. Sorry. Oh, buddy. Take the track and loss. That’s crazy. Feel my heart right now. Feel it. Feel it. That was bigger than the Walker Cup. I’m way more nervous on that. Way more nervous. I’m a part of a service organization on campus called Texas Cowboys. Texas Cowboys give back to the University of Texas and the local Austin community. Scotty Shuffler was cowboy. Bo Hustler. We shoot the cannon at football games. That’s kind of the fun thing that we get to do. Those are my chaps. It’s my cowboy hat. They’re kind of cool. Got my got my initials on it. So, it’s part of our game day fit. Text Cowboys was a perfect way for me to kind of get away from the course and spend some time with my friends off the golf course. Have you been taking down this chocolate at all, dude? My god. Yeah. We got workouts tomorrow, dude. We’re fine. I’ll make it up. Tommy’s been putting in a lot of good work, though. I’ll give him props. I think I got there at 5:50 this morning. As you can probably tell, I probably look tired. I’m pretty tired right now. you on the PJ tour, you you got to get up early and you got to go to the golf course early and get warmed up and go train and it just builds good habits for the future. I think the team goes in there usually 2 days a week. Works out at 6:00 a.m. about an hour long. It’s definitely something you got to do. You lost a lot of weight. I did. Yes, sir. You look good, man. How you doing? You go in our gym, we’ve got banners up of all the Olympians that have came through Texas and represented their country. To share a gym with them is pretty fun, but it’s also pretty intimidating at times. I think Christian and I have done a pretty good job over the last couple years with our bodies getting stronger on and off the course. Starts with more stability and balance. Kind of just rolling around sometimes. Yesterday, just out of the blue, I got a chance to talk to Gary Player. I talked to him about Laccasta. So he won twice there. Sebie had the lead I think in 1978. He said he called me daddy. He said you’re not going to beat me daddy. Not this week. And Gary Player came back. He shot 64 the last round at Lacasta and beat him. Sebie came up to him and he goes, “Last week you played well. This week you were lucky.” Live from the Lacasta Country Club in Laccasta, California. We’re hosting the national championship out at Lacasta. People think I have a screw loose to be what wanting to do that, but it’s good for college golf and somebody’s got to host it. Texas needed to be a leader there, similar to Omaha for baseball and Oklahoma City for women’s softball. We’d like Lacosta to be the permanent site for Division One National Championship for both women and men. It’s a great site. Best weather in the world. At Texas, we talk about national championships because it’s part of our fiber. It’s part of what we are. It’s so important for our fans to believe that we can do it. And I do believe we can do it this year. And I’m hoping that we’re holding that trophy at the end. Hook them on three. 1 2 3. Hook them. I don’t know the last time we went to a workout and didn’t come here after. This is definitely the best part of the morning for sure. Honestly, this might be the best breakfast we can get in Austin. One of our old teammates, Jeffrey Zor, she used to come here and like he introduced us to it and then we’ve been coming ever since. I think it started with Moss and I and then I don’t know, everyone just started coming. It’s the best. Armando’s Kitchen. How would you guys me up? Me? Yeah. If you were had to be nice about me, I would say you’re you don’t lack confidence. He’s confident in what he does. Can’t see in there. He can get up and down from a shoe box. The way our qualifings are set up, it’s not me picking people. It is not them doing anything other than letting their clubs do the talking. And that’s significantly important because I hate drama. We like to have at least three rounds of qualifying. Once in a while, it’ll just be 36 holes. I don’t ever want to put him in a situation where we’re deciding our team over 18 holes. His phrase is let your clubs do the talking and there’s no exception. So if you qualify, you’re going and if you don’t, you’re not. Treats everyone the same. And if you work hard, you’re going to be in the lineup and be playing this great schedule that we have. And I think that’s the way it should be. In the past it was a lot easier I think to qualify. Um now we have nine guys. Last year we had seven. It’s way more competitive. This year I think all nine guys can make the lineup at any given point in time. So it keeps us super competitive at home and I think it’s great preparation for tournaments. Obviously, two guys are already qualified because they’ve either finished top 10 in an event or they were pre-qualified based on another criteria, which is to play in the US amateur. And if they did that and then they win a qualifier, they get to add one. If you finish top 10, you’re in the next tournament. If you win a tournament, you’re in the next three tournaments. We play really tough courses and uh with this Texas win, it bite you in the butt every once in a while. So, you have to be on your game and really stay present uh during each shot in each round. On a normal basis, we have kind of a four course rotation. UT Golf Club, Spanish Oaks, Barton Creek Canyons, and then we have Austin Country Club. It’s a great rotation. They’re Hill Country courses. Even our first qualifier this year, he had to shoot a lot of underpar scores in some windy conditions to qualify for that first event. Nothing’s given to any of us. It’s brutally competitive at home. And that’s I mean, that’s what you want, though. It’s good for us. We’re trying to teach them with this competitive environment how to go about their business. And if you develop those skills here, then you can take those out on the PGA tour and be a lot more comfortable out there to begin with, which is significantly important. [Music] If you’re going to try to be the best that you possibly can be, I do think that it’s time for a conversation about being able to compartmentalize your life. I get a little distracted when it came to practicing. And coach sat me down one day and said, “Hey, listen. When you’re at the golf course, you need to be focused on what you’re doing at the golf course.” He’s like, “When you’re in class, you need to be paying attention in class.” And he’s like, “When you get to do your social stuff, you need to be present where you are. When you’re thinking about what you’re doing, I think that’s when you’re living. You look at the best player in the world right now, it’s Scotty Shuffler, and he was a Longhorn, and there’s, you know, no doubt in my mind that he’s fully present on every shot he hits. And when Coach Fields, you know, reminds us to be present, it’s definitely something to listen to. The best players in the world are doing it. I think the quote was be where your feet are. Golf’s a very mental sport and you may get off to a good start or a bad start, but you got to really catch yourself if you are thinking too far forward. Stay present instead of thinking about what happened yesterday, thinking what could happen tomorrow. Stay you stay here and that’s an important thing on the golf course. If you can do that to a good extent, your head’s not drifting away somewhere thinking of something else. And so we have that conversation with some of our guys when they really expressed the opportunity, identity, talent to be able to win a major championship. You have to be compartmentalized. And the people that I’ve been around that are major championship caliber and have won major championships, they are absolutely that way. Tom Kai is that way. Ben Krenshaw exactly the same way. Justin Leonard exactly the same way. Jordan Speed exactly the same way and Scotty Sheffller for sure is exactly the same way. At that point, it’s not luck that they did what they did. [Applause] [Music] Well, this team, it has a lot of pressure on it. If we want to take that pressure, we don’t need to. Top to bottom, we have the most depth that we’ve ever had. I believe this team can have incredible success, but it’s going to take everybody doing what they’re supposed to do. I think we’ve got an opportunity to do something really cool in college golf. I think everyone’s hungry to get some revenge on the SEC Championship after our performance last year and then, you know, now we’ve got three guys that have played the Costa bunch uh where the national championship is and I’d argue we’re probably one of the more prepared teams for the national championship. We’d obviously love to win a national championship and kind of just got to stay grounded and do what we need to do to get the job done. I think we’ve got an amazing program, amazing team. Each player is so talented. Even guys that may not be traveling that week are just so good at home. We got one more chance. Be amazing to finish it off reaching the finals. And that just kind of puts you in longer history if you get to win a national championship here. What we talk about at the beginning of the year here is that you can enjoy the practice, the preparation, the competition. Some people’s goal is to win a golf tournament or to make a lot of money or whatever. But for us, fun is winning. Watch us celebrate and then you’ll know we’re having fun because those guys are so competitive. We need to enjoy what we’re doing. Don’t let the expectations bring us down. Give us the opportunity to to go out there and have fun, which means you got to take care of business. And that’s what we’ll do.
