Paul Wearing was playing some of the finest golf of his career this time last year. But the last 12 months have been anything but smooth for the Englishman in 2024. We wearing delivered one of his most impressive seasons on the DP World Tour highlighted by a standout victory at the penultimate event of the year, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. That one helped him secure one of the coveted 10 PGA Tour cards available through the race to Dubai rankings, setting the stage for a new chapter in the United States. But his American adventure quickly turned into a struggle. The 40-year-old missed 11 of his 12 PGA Tour cuts, including a streak of 10 consecutive missed weekends across both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to start his 2025 campaign. His season then took an even harsher turn in July when he was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Scottish Open. One week before the Open Championship, effectively ending his year. For the past 5 months, Wearing has been sidelined, dealing with the shoulder issues that derailed his momentum. Now he’s finally ready to return. The Englishman is set to tee it up at this week’s Ned Bank Golf Challenge in South Africa, a limited field no cut event featuring just 66 players. Announcing his return on X, wearing said it felt great to be back and also shared his appreciation for the warm welcome from the DP World Tour. His comeback arrives just a month after he was forced to miss his title defense at the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC championship. Speaking before that event, Wearing opened up about the shoulder problems that kept him out of action. “It’s professional sport. The wear and tear is real.” He told Worldwide Golf. “We play four rounds a week across about 25 events, roughly 100 competitive rounds a year, plus practice, proms, gym work, travel. Injuries happen. Mine came an annoying time, but that’s how it goes. You can’t control it. What has given me is a reset. Mentally, I’ve had time to get some clarity and I’m hungrier to get back. Wearing will begin his return on Thursday morning in group one playing alongside Yoast Louis Tin and Daniel Vanonderander.
