Ireland will take the number-one seed in Flight A at the Men’s European Mid-Amateur Team Championships, while the Irish women will also compete for Gold as number-two seeds in Spain.

Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell, David Reddan of Castleknock, and County Louth’s Gerard Dunne were the three leading scorers on day one for the Irish men, with Reddan’s four-under 67 the best of the bunch as they combined for a nine-under tally. Fota Island’s David Howard struggled on day one, but he made amends on day two, firing a six-under 65 which was later matched by Campbell and Dunne matched his opening 69 with another to bring the team tally to -23 overall, giving them pole position, two shots ahead of Germany.

Campbell finished third place in the individual strokeplay portion on -9, two behind German Cedric Otten and one behind another German in Christopher Dammet.

The quartet will now take on fourth-seeded Spain in tomorrow’s semi-final, with Germany taking on France in the other semi-final.

Reddan and Howard will team up in the opening match, with Campbell and Dunne following in the second paired match, before Campbell leads them out in the singles, followed by Reddan and Dunne.

In the Women’s Championship, Aideen Walsh’s four-under opening round, combined with Jessica Ross’ three-under 68 and Shannon Burke’s level-par round gave the Irish women the overnight lead at -7, but they could only improve by one on day two with Walsh again the frontrunner with a one-under 70 and Burke and Clodagh Coughlan firing rounds of level-par.

Qualification for Flight A was the number-one goal, and they’re safely through in the number-two seed position where they’ll face France, with Germany, who pipped Ireland by a single stroke, taking on fourth-seeded Italy.

Walsh and Coughlan will lead out the ladies in the opening match, with Burke and Ross following, and then it’ll be Walsh, Burke and Ross in that order in the afternoon singles.
