The 5 WORST Chipping MISTAKES and How To FIX Them

not bad but today we’re talking about the five most common and worst chipping mistakes that you can make more importantly so chipping around the greens please whatever you do don’t try to hit down on the golf ball again advice that maybe you’ve been given in the past you know hands forward ball back we need a descending blow i don’t see that helping i see that giving so many more issues so what we never want to be doing is feeling like we’re driving the handle or the club head down towards the ground because what’s going to happen is in most cases i mean that was extreme super extreme but we’re just going to thump the ground before the ball and when that happens obviously we get a terrible result it doesn’t therefore take you that long to figure out that you don’t be hitting the ground and we have the opposite kind of reaction arms pull in and we just thin it across we want a slight descending blow we want the club to be working a little bit down as it hits the golf ball but we do that through our setup we do that through how we address the ball and the relationships that we create and actually through the shot it’s more common to see good chippers actually moving up and away from the ground the lead shoulder is moving up away from the ground the grip is moving up and away from the ground they’re starting to take some of the flexes in their legs their body and they’re starting to remove it so i’m not trying to hit down if i want a little bit more of a steeper approach angle i can change my setup and i can do it here but never in the swing so often we see this kind of driving motion with a handle and it never really ends well so what i actually love you to do and this one’s a you know tricky chip here i’ve got a little bit of a raise so i’ve got my 60 degree so i’m going to take my address i’m going to have a little bit of shaft lean but all i’m actually going to do is worry about the sole of the golf club colliding with the ground and actually pivoting through and gaining a little bit of height and if i do that it’s far more likely to give me the striker that i want and that one’s a pretty good result there so don’t try and hit down just create the good setups and actually work on pivoting your body through to give you those quality strikes around the greens so you see i’ve got an alignment stick in the ground here we’ll come to that in a moment but a really common problem i see is the club being taken too much on the inside in the back swing so what do i mean by that i mean we might have a really nice setup we might have the right club but the club head moves too much to the inside in the backswing the reason that’s problematic is because when the club moves inside if you’ll see from that face on camera the club head doesn’t tend to move a huge amount upwards it tends to stay quite low to the ground if i take the club straighter back you’ll notice that the club head moves more up so when we have that club moving too much inside it’s really really easy to scuff it hit the ground before the ball and it only takes you a few shots of hitting the ground before the wall you realize that’s not what you want to do and we end up then sort of flexing the arms like this to miss the ground and guess what we get that ball shooting across the green so we have to have a really nice attack angle when we’re hitting these shots we don’t really want to be hitting down intentionally we want to create a setup and a motion which has some downward in there so you can see that i’ve got this alignment stick in the ground fairly shallow angle and you can see from that angle it’s pretty much pointing down towards my flag if i set my golf ball just over the width of a club head away from the alignment stick take my setup and then i can just work from here the more i take it inside clearly i’m going to get some feedback from that stick so it really helps me move the club on a better motion back and through how do i do this well it’s how i move my shoulders i don’t want to be rotating my shoulders i want to feel like there’s a little bit of tilt in the shoulders right shoulder is going more up lead shoulders going more down that’s what controls that club head and that’s what gives me that nice attack angle once i can do that it should help me with strike and i nearly hold that one i just need to hit it a little bit harder so don’t take it on the inside try and take it straight to back it’s going to help you with your chipping right using too much loft i see this all the time i’ve been on the course so many times with students and they’ve just dived in there for the 60 of the 56 and it’s often not the best club yes of course i can stand there with the highest lotted club in my bag and i can hit a shot and get it close but more often than not it’s going to be more difficult to get it close with that club put those high lofted clubs away when there’s nothing between you and the flag as you can see here it will depend on the situation but something like an iron a seven iron you know even a six iron is going to be a better option give me a hundred balls with the highest lofted club and an eight iron on average you’re gonna be much closer with that a time yes i have to judge you know how much it’s going to roll and my pace control needs a little bit of work but effectively i’m trying to hit this nice low shuttle on the ground it’s safer to play the ball along the ground than it is through the air so when chipping try and put those high lofted clubs away use something with less loft like an eight iron and i’d almost guarantee you’re gonna get better results so another really common issue that i see is just people taking normal setups it should when you’re over the golf ball look like you’re gonna hit a short shot i should be able to tell the type of shot you’re gonna hit just by looking at your setup that shot there that setup i’ve got myself a nine on here which i think is the right club for the shot but i just set myself up as if i was gonna hit a full shot with a nine-nine nice wide stance distance from the ball when we’re chipping we have to stand differently we have to really narrow that stance but a club width apart would be ideal from this angle we have to then shuffle and get nice and close to the golf ball we have to raise the heel up a little bit we have to have the hand a little forward we have to look like we’re hitting a really nice finesse shot around the green not that first shot that we saw there so we don’t set up like we would for a full shot we make this very very different setup weight on the left stirred in front of the ball and then from there it’s gonna be much easier to hit those little chip shots around the greens and had i read that correctly i might be even closer i’ve got to chip that ball again because it’s gone over the back of the green so this would be uh you know i’ve had to pick one this would be the most common mistake i see just loads of wrist action and what we see when we see that is because that tends to move the club a fair distance there’s no need to move the body at all so the golfers out there who too tend to use the wrist too much have very little body pivot and when we have this motion it’s very difficult to be consistent and actually if we do strike the ball we get these super high shots that don’t really go any distance so a chip shot yeah there might be a little bit of risk in there depending on the shot you’re trying to hit but it’s very much a body controlled movement so try this little exercise you’re going to take an alignment stick or something similar and you’re just going to hold it alongside the club that’s in your hand i got myself a 56 degree wedge here now it’s obviously going to feel a little bit strange to take your grips you have to do the kind of best you can but when i take a setup that alignment stick is going to run up the left-hand side of my body and it’s in contact with me now as i make a little backswing movement the stick might start to leave my side a little bit absolutely fine what i want to try and avoid is the feeling or the sensation of that stick hitting me in or around contact if it’s hitting me that means i’m trying to accelerate the club to the ball with my wrists what i’m actually looking to do is start with a little bit of contact against my lead side so if we can get this to be in place a bit more securely and then through the motion it never actually touched me again it’s still away from my side here the reason for that is because i’m using my body pivot you’ll notice that you know on a shot that’s no more than let’s call that 20 yards i’ve still got a body pivot i’ve still got the heel in the air still got my body extending and i’ve still got my arm structure my wrists have been a little bit more passive it’s going to give me a lower ball flight it’s going to be more consistent now this might be well this is certainly wanted in practice and it’s not easy to hit shots here because the club tends to feel a little different but we should be able to hit some nice little shots a little bit too strong to think but the technique was good and the strike was good and there’s my end position so it’s a great way to practice many of you will have these line mistakes in your bag or you’ll have something similar that you could use and if you can just practice hitting your shots without it making contact with you it’s amazing how much better your technique is going to get and how much better those shots can be so a little bit of restriction is fine too much is very very difficult to work with and i see that as probably the biggest mistake that golfers make when chipping around the greens

Are you making any of these 5 worst chipping mistakes?

I have been coaching amateur golfers for over 20 years and these are the most common mistakes that i see time and time again, but luckily they are easily fixed.

If you make any of these mistakes it could be costing you valuable shots around the greens and holding you back from playing better golf, so fix these really common chipping mistakes and you could soon be getting up and down more often

  1. Thanks for another great video Chris. Problem #3 really hit home with me. I tend to default to my 56* wedge for most shots near or around the green. I will try to move away to my 9i or PW instead.

  2. Just coming back from the course and really struggled with the chips today. And you answered all of my questions. Thanks Chris, You are awesome

  3. I’ll use 9i,PW, 52, or 57. It’s according to what the shot requires…. (I can even open the 57 up a little for an extreme, but necessary “flop shot”). This of course takes some practice to feel how far they will roll out. However, keeping the shot as simple as possible really pays off. I’ll even use the “Texas wedge” if possible(putter). Just remember…. You’re goal is leaving yourself a tap in for par. Don’t let ego keep you from doing that. Trust me. It’s gonna feel much sweeter beating your buddy by 4 strokes, as opposed to hitting 1/5 good shots with your 60* from just off the green. lol. On a side note…. I use my 52* for most stock shots. There’s nothing wrong with getting really good with one particular club. However, I don’t recommend it being your 60*. There’s just simply not enough margin for error, with that much loft.

  4. Tip: For the last drill, you can stick the alignment rod down through the hole in the top of the grip for the same affect without having the uncomfortable feeling of holding it along side the grip.

  5. What about setup and the arm structure? Isn't it key to keep the left arm fairly straight without excessive bend and keep connection of arms and body while rotating? Also, avoid rotating the hands and forearms excessively?

  6. The rotation tip at 4:00 is really eye opening. When I hit the ball bad, I can feel there was an awkward part of my swing that caused it but I could never put it into words. Thank you for that!
