BIRDI Golf closed its doors without warning Monday, ending a six-year run as one of Woodbury’s indoor golf destinations.

The abrupt shutdown at Valley Creek Mall was announced in a message from their website, which said “A difficult decision has been made to shut down the business effective immediately.” BIRDI Golf, which opened in October of 2019, served “over 15,000 golfers” and became a gathering spot for leagues, parties and families, according to a statement made on social media.

The owners cited a crowded entertainment-golf market, including new competition only minutes away, as a primary factor.

“Over the last few years a lot of competition came into the market with an overbuild out of simulator businesses, which made it easier for people to play closer to home,” they wrote. “Combined with warm and short winters and probably TopGolf among other things, as owners, we couldn’t justify staying open any longer.”

Both Topgolf and ParT Barn opened their new east metro venues in early November, adding two large-scale competitors to an already crowded market.

The owners said they “tried to work with Wellington,” responding to a Facebook comment about the timing of the closure. Wellington Management, which has owned Valley Creek Mall since 1994, oversees the center’s more than 25 retail tenants.

In a longer farewell, owners Matt McBride, Eric Delacy and their team reflected on six years of community ties, noting the business made it through the pandemic and donated “$10,000s to local causes.” They emphasized that their sister business, The Lumberyard Pub in Afton, remains open year-round.

According to information posted on BIRDI’s website:
