Wayne Gretzky has had a pretty eventful year in the headlines in 2025. After all the hullabaloo at the 4 Nations Face-Off final against the United States in Boston, ‘The Great One’ was essentially public enemy number one in Canada, with fans accusing the NHL legend of disloyalty towards the country after failing to wear their colors.

Gretzky has since gone on record to clear the air from the 4 Nations backlash and also clarified his relationship with President Donald Trump and his family. Clearly, all is well between the pair, as Gretzky was once again spotted with his old friend this week.

Gretzky was spotted golfing with Trump in Florida this week, but he wasn’t the only big name on the course. LIV Golf’s Brooks Koepka was also on the scene.

Trump posted a video of the pair on the social media platform Truth Social, captioning the post: “Winning is always nice!”

Inside Gretzky’s Long History With Donald Trump

Trump made waves earlier this year, suggesting Gretzky could run for “any political office in Canada, and win.”

“Wayne is my friend, and he wants to make me happy, and is therefore somewhat “low key” about Canada remaining a separate country, rather than becoming a cherished and beautiful 51st state, paying much lower taxes, a free and powerful military, NO TARIFFS, and having a booming economy,” Trump wrote in one of his Truth Social posts.

Those comments ruffled more than a few feathers, piling more criticism on Gretzky. In a recent interview on the “100% Hockey” podcast, Gretzky made his thoughts clear on that controversy and the 4 Nations backlash.

“Canadians are proud,” Gretzky started by saying. “But here are the two factors. I don’t know how many people moved to the US, whether it’s business, entertainment, or hockey; I don’t know the exact number. But I would tell you that over 90% of them became American citizens. I never became an American citizen. I’m Canadian. I can’t vote in the US because I live in the US and I’m Canadian.”

Gretzky, who has been living in the United States since 1988, also stressed that he was steering well clear of politics.

“I’m not in politics. So, I can’t stop the prime minister from saying something,” Gretzky said.

“I can’t stop the president from saying something. I’m just a hockey player, simple as that. As I said to the prime minister. He wouldn’t tell me how to play hockey, I’m not going to tell him what to do in politics, simple as that.”

Gretzky has been friends with Trump for years now, and was also pictured at Mar-a-Lago during the election night party with his family.
