Wayne Gretzky isn’t letting widespread criticism from Canadians stop him from cozying up to U.S. President Donald Trump.

With U.S. Thanksgiving taking place last week and Gretzky living in the United States, it seemed like the NHL’s all-time points leader had some big plans for the weekend. Among those plans was playing some golf with a few high-profile figures.

In a social post, Trump shared some photos and videos of himself hitting the green with Gretzky, as well as American golfer Brooks Koepka and Fox News host Bret Baier. The 79-year-old politician was, as usual, wearing his trademark red “Make America Great Again” hat.

The Great One has come under fire about his loyalty to Canada over the past year. This is due to his close ties to Trump, despite the 79-year-old repeatedly threatening to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.

Gretzky has said on multiple occasions that he is not interested in influencing politics on either side of the border, and has maintained his devotion to Canada.

There was also some feathers ruffled at the 4 Nations championship game between Canada and the United States earlier this year. Some Canadians didn’t like that he opted to come through the American entrance to the ice and wasn’t wearing a Canadian jersey when he did the ceremonial face-off. Gretzky addressed those concerns on a podcast earlier this month.

This is far from the first time that Trump and Gretzky have been seen together. The president has name-dropped Gretzky on several occasions throughout his second term, including one bizarre social post that suggested the NHL legend become the next Canadian Prime Minister.

Gretzky was also present at Trump’s presidential victory party last year, as well as his inauguration.

Criticism aside, golfing isn’t anything new for the four-time Stanley Cup champion. Gretzky has been an avid golfer throughout his life, and his daughter, Paulina, is married to American pro golfer Dustin Johnson.

It will be interesting to see how many more public outings Gretzky will make with the sitting U.S. president.
