Dude was hitting his 1961 driver that was 43.5 inches further than I hit my 2025 45 inch school bus.

Definitely a different game. He goes from a pw to a 58° “sw” with nothing in between. I’m sure his pw is close to 50° based on the yardages, but it’s still such a big difference between modern 4 and 5 wedge setups.

Need a tournament where the players use this kind of equipment. I’d pay to watch.

Was that at oakmont, by any chance? Anyone recall?

Tbf, there was virtually no technological advancement in golf clubs over those 28 years. Persimmons and forged blades all around.

This is cool as hell. Is there a good place to find all these old magazine articles

It looks crazy to see 1945, but they would have only been 27 year old irons at that point.

I would happily play a set of Ping Eye from the 80s now and they would be older than that.

That’s really cool. I would love to see a tournament where each day is equipment from a certain decade.
    Day 1 – 1970’s
    Day 2 – 1960’s
    Day 3 – 1950’s
    Day 4 – 1940’s

    Or something like that.

The thing to keep in mind is today’s lofts are way different. His 7I has the loft of today’s 9I.

His woods and long irons were all older than him. For reference he was born in 1947

This is the type of posts we need more of here, very interesting indeed!

Miller said the biggest mistake he made was using new clubs because of an endorsement deal. He also felt he got muscle-bound (this was an actual belief in baseball and golf) after an off-season of doing a bunch of outdoors work. Neither one of those explain his case of yips.

I’ve played with old stuff like this quite a bit for fun. I still do on occasion. The most impressive thing about shooting 63 in an open with this gear is the golf ball he used.

D9 swing weight in the driver is crazyyyy

Regarding those irons, years ago Miller had Chi Chi in the booth and during the broadcast relayed how kind Chi Chi was to him as a young pro (vs the rest of the tour). You could tell that Rodriguez meant a lot to him. So much so that he pulled out those exact irons and gifted them to him on air. I’m not generally a big Miller fan but it was a really touching moment.
