The Uvalde Coyotes won top honors in the San Antonio ISD Fall Invitational golf tournament staged Nov. 17 at San Antonio’s Mission Del Lago golf course.

They recorded a team score of 307 to finish far ahead of their nearest opponents, Fox Tech and Sotomayor, in the team standings.

Fox Tech placed second with a 337 team total, while Sotomayor took third place with a 369 total.

“It was a great way to finish the fall golf season,” said Uvalde High School head golf coach Roy Torres. “We are all looking forward to the spring season!”

Uvaldeans Blaze Cantu and Remington Heard won the top two spots in the individual standing. Cantu placed first with a 71 round and Heard took runner-up honors with his total of 72 strokes.

Other Uvaldeans Brett Dreyer, Patton Osina, and Kooper Mello each enjoyed a round of 82.

“The weather conditions were ideal. It’s the first time I have been on that golf course when it was not really windy,” said Coach Torres. “The course was set up to help the kids out. They did not try to make it too hard for them.”

A total of 12 teams took part in the tournament.

Next action for UHS golfers is scheduled for the last week in January.

In junior varsity golf action on Nov. 21 at the Alsatian golf course near Castroville, Uvalde High School fielded two teams.

The UHS Maroon team placed 11th with a 422 total, while the UHS White team finished 12th with a 454 total.

Cooper Arthur led the Maroon team with his low round of 93.

Other scores for the Maroons were Juan Sanchez with his round of 99, Stevie Rodriguez with his score of  111, and Fernando Rangel with a round of 119.

Belisario Fuentes had the low score of 104 for the White team.

Lucas Teague carded a 113, Geronimo Najera totaled 116 strokes, while John Zamora posted a round of 121.

Holy Cross won the team title with a 307 score, followed by San Antonio O’Connor with a 309 total.

Isa Villarreal represented UHS in the girls division of the junior varsity tourney. She finished ninth with her score of 109.
