Make 1 CHANGE & Hit The Golf Ball STRAIGHTER

we’re all going to hit golf shots especially with the drive which go offline in this video i’m going to explain to you what is the biggest and the main cause of those offline golf shots and then of course more importantly how you can fix it now the good news is it’s not down to your swing shape if you’re someone who cuts massively across the golf ball there will be unfortunately plenty of you out there that’s not the cause if you’re offline golf shots if you swing the club way out to the right that isn’t the cause of your online golf shots just have a look at the shot that’s on the screen there look at the club path hugely out to wheeling double figures that’s a massive out to win swing but look where the ball went ended up right in the middle of the fairway the reason it ended up in the middle of the fairway is because on that shot the club face was controlled for every single club path that is out there there is a club face position which will allow you to hit the fairway so if you’re not hitting the fairway it’s all to do with club face position and not having control of that club face and that’s what we’re gonna fix we’re gonna run you through some steps that you can take to control that club face and hit more fairways so number one if we’re looking to control the club face we have to take a look at the address position we have to start with the club aiming where you want the ball to go how do you do that well we’re going to talk about an intermediate target so we do that in our pre-shot routine we start from behind the golf ball we pick where we want our ball to go and then we look for something that’s within the first few feet of that golf ball that the club needs to aim at and the ball needs to go over i’ve got a little blemish down here what i then do is when i’m taking my address to the golf ball i make sure that i’m taking my time in a line in the club phase to that intermediate target then i can build my stance on my setup around that but it means that my club face is off to the best possible start and it’s correctly aligned at address the second thing we have to do is control the club face in takeaway this is often what i would call first point of breakdown so when we see the club face start to really get out of position it’s really hard to recover from there so what are we actually looking for well let me take my address and you’ll notice that i’m tilted over the golf ball we all have to be you will be as well and the checkpoint i want you to work on is when that club reaches level with the ground so you can see here that the club shaft is level the ground notice how the leading edge of the club so that top edge is exactly the same as my body angle that is a fantastic reference point for you and that’s a great little drill just simply standing there and learning how to move the club away and maintain the club faces relationship that you set at address so often we see this clubface positioned here and then the golfer rolls the club clubface looking to sky that’s no good or opposite clubface looking too much at the ground possibly a better option but again that’s no good either so just learn how to move the club into this position notice what my right palm is doing it’s just following and mirroring my body rotation there is no independent movement from my hands and arms when that club starts to get open it’s when we start to see too much rolling too much fanning of the club and effectively it’s the hands and the arms getting evolved too early so we need to make sure that club face is controlled at what we call the first checkpoint which when that club shaft is level with the ground top of the swing this is the next point where we’re going to see so many club faces getting out of position and when we look at the top of the golf swing where the club face is there we really relate that to lead wrist okay this is my lead wrist here we’re looking at the difference in the back of the lead wrist and the back of the forearm if at the top of the goal swing i have some shape or what we call cupping in that wrist then the club face is more than likely going to be way way open and trust me if you’re missing fairways there’s a very good chance that your clubface will be open due to this cupped wrist so what we have to do is learn how to get to the top of our golf swing with a flat wrist and all i really want you to do here is take an address and then just think about where the logo on your glove would be pointing a cupped wrist would see that logo pointing more out in front of me possibly more down towards the ground a feeling would be a dusting johnson type move where we feel like the logo points a lot more up towards the sky and you can see how that’s changed completely my wrist position my wrist angle and if i move between what we classed as the good position in the poor position just look at how that is influencing and changing the club face hugely different there you can see this is the open club face this is the more neutral club face so if we can point the club face correctly at address we can ensure that we have it under control at the takeaway and we have a flat wrist at the top of our golf swing guess what you’ve moved from set up to top of the backswing and everything is still in position for you to hit fairways can still go wrong in the downswing that’s what we’re going to cover now now got some bad news for you if your club face is out of position in the downswing it’s harder to fix simply there’s more speed involved there’s less time involved really difficult to actually consciously think of any different swing moves so we can have some ideas we can have some feelings have some concepts and that’s what we’re gonna do here you can see i’ve brought my golf bag in so it’s well just in front of my golf ball here this is a great little exercise featured on the course and we’re specifically looking at those goals have the club face open and that is by far the biggest cause of offline golf shots club face which is open you might well have now got the club into a great position at the top but we can still transition into the downs and have the club face open and that’s really common because there’s so much force going on in this early part the downswing it’s really easy to apply some twists to the golf club we don’t want and we have the club face excessively open here’s where the golf bag comes in i would have you do this on the course obviously away from the tee box maybe over to the side when you’re playing part as a team golf but what you’re effectively going to do is take an address to a golf ball or an imaginary golf ball and just hover the club a little bit more above the ground and the idea would be you’re going to make some little back swings some relatively slow down swings and just get the toe of the club to hit the golf bag and you can see that there if you’re someone who has the club face excessively open here and you’re someone who tends to drag and collapse this lead arm it might feel more natural for you to get the kind of club shaft or the heat of the golf club to hit the golf bag you can probably almost see that club face there indicating it’s way way open so for me to get the toe of the club into the bag i have to do a couple of things i have to feel like i rotate my forearm through the impact area rotating my forearm will as you can see massively change with the club face points but it’s also teaching me and helping me learn when that happens when i do this little exercise i really feel that that process actually has to happen pre-impact and that’s often where golfers get this wrong you know they’re often really trying to rotate the hands over but they’re doing it far too late the ball’s kind of well gone it’s already gone 20 30 yards and the club is a couple of feet past impact so this little exercise teaches you the right move but it also teaches you the timing of when you need to do this when you need to release the golf club remember if we want the club face square at impact we have to begin that squaring process you know this side of the golf ball we have to learn how to time that correctly so if you’re hitting offline golf shots i’d almost guarantee you almost guarantee you that it’s to do with your club face control even if you’ve got what your classes a really ugly looking swing where the club works across the golf well that isn’t causing those offline goal shots controlling the club face will help you hit more fairways they might not be straight shots but they will land in the fairway and that’s the key thing how do we do that we control it through the backswing and we learn how to control the club face down at impact all that’s left to do now is hit a shot and see if we can hit this 12 fairway and that might just hang on to the left side of the fairway but that’s certainly in play and on this 12th hole this time in the morning not many swings under my belt i’d be pretty happy with that one right thanks for watching i hope that helps and hopefully see you back here again for a future video

Would you like to hit straighter golf shots, find more fairways and more greens?

In this video I show you how you can make 1 change and hit the golf ball straighter, and it’s easier than you may think.

Making this 1 change can give you more control over the club face and in turn more control over the golf ball resulting in you hitting the golf ball straighter

  1. Thanks Chris, really enjoying your videos and taking it to the course. This one will be good for me as a bit inconsistent at the moment with driver 👍

  2. You have to have the record for amount of wildlife in your golf videos! Lol! That pheasant was so unbothered with whatever you were doing.

  3. A full body release is how I like to think of it. The way the whole swing stays in sequence throughout the swing with this one magical thought.
    Thanks

  4. Hi Chris, really love your content and simple instructional videos which greatly improved my overall skillset – I am really working hard to hit my driver consistently because this part of my game really kills my HC at the moment (I am hitting the rest of my clubs very well…) Will let you know how I progress with the tips provided. Best wishes from Cape Town (SA)

  5. The bag drill is fantastic Chris. My swing is relatively good, path, plane and face until impact. I leave the face open around 5-6 degrees every time. And with a swing speed of 110, I rob myself of so much distance and I’m always scrambling. Hopefully this helps me!

  6. On the second point: if my wrist is bowed, I get zero (thumb up) wrist cock …zero .. the more cupped ,, the more wrist movement I have .. as I get back down to the hip height area, I uncup the wrist and it automatically extends my thumb starting to release the club shaft .. if there is a way around this.. I would love to know it. Thanks CR.

  7. A great couple of tips. Thank you. At 48, my handicap is now 12, so these simple tips, practiced, will hopefully get me back into single digits. Thanks to Covid and Melbourne’s 6 lockdowns (which meant all courses have been closed for significant amount of times with each) this might just be enough (especially the bag trick, haven’t seen this one before). 👍😎🇦🇺

  8. I have been trying to get more lag in my driver swing but keep slicing or pushing to right. I normally hit it pretty straight. Should I close the face more? I find it easier to close on backswing rather than downswing.

  9. Great video Chris! I have been concentrating on having my right palm facing the ball and flat left wrist to the first check point and then palm down/flat left wrist at impact. It definitely has helped my ball striking and distances. Keep up the good work!

  10. A really quick fix is to play around with a weaker, or stronger grip. That way, you don’t have to change your current swing that much. For instance…. If your ball starts right, and then curves further right, you would benefit from a slightly stronger grip. Or…. If your ball starts left, and continues to hook left, you could obviously benefit from a slightly weaker grip. Your ball flight tells you everything you need to know. But, club face is 80%. Club face is KING. I recommend low to mid hc players to experiment with grip anyways. You’ll figure out the difference movements that it takes to play with each grip. For example…. A really strong grip will require much more hip rotation, and right side bend, to keep you from hitting the ball miles left(Dustin Johnson). A really weak grip will have you stalling your rotation, and forcing you to use your arms, and hands more, to keep you from hitting it miles to the right(usually mid to high hc players who are just figuring out how to hit it straighter). Experiment with the “extremes” in golf. You’ll figure it out.

  11. Excellent exercise using a golf bag! That’s been my struggle of when to release the club before impact.

  12. I have the exact opposite problem. I tend to hook the ball. I believe it is from flipping my hands at the ball which I’m unaware that I’m actually doing or how to stop

  13. I’m an old golfer (59) playing since more than 30 years and I can tell you this video is one of the very best we can find on the net!! All is said for a logical way to reach consistency and… pleasure!!

  14. Outstanding video Chris… Applied these drills at the Range today and the improvement was great.. Keep up the good work.
