Former PGA Tour winner Kevin Chapel has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to retire from professional golf at just 39, officially bringing an into a career that spanned more than 300 PGA Tour starts and over $17 million in earnings. Chapel has battled persistent injuries for several years, most notably undergoing back surgery in late 2018. He revealed in a subpar podcast that the long recovery and the struggle to regain form ultimately pushed him toward retirement. “It was basically a year and a half when I didn’t play a lot of competitive golf, and I really struggled to find any form after that,” said the 2017 President’s Cup player. “During that time, I started to grow as a person, started to grow as a father, and my priorities began to change. I realized my work ethic was going down and my results were going down.” After returning from surgery, Chapel competed in 90 events, but the results were sobering. Nearly half ended in missed cuts and he recorded just one top 10 finish. The turning point came earlier this year at the Zurich Classic. After entering the event as an alternate and partnering with Tom Hogue, Chapel found himself grouped with Rory Mroy and Shane Lowry. And the golf performance was impossible to ignore. I’m watching Shane and Rory play and I might not have ever been Rory, but I certainly was a top 30 player in the world. Chapel said, “I’m thinking the amount of work it’s going to take to get back there and the things I’m going to miss out on, I’m not sure this is worth it.” He spent months reflecting on that moment. A family trip to Europe, where he played in the Italian Open and BMW International Open, helped solidify his decision. I think my priorities have changed, he admitted. Watching the level those guys were playing at and the level I once had, I never played the game just to get a tea time. It was always about competing and winning and the amount of work it would take to get back there. I miss out on too much that I don’t want to miss. Chappelle’s final event was the Barracuda Championship, a co-sanctioned PGA Tour, DP World Tour tournament. After making five starts on the PGA Tour this year under limited status, with his professional chapter now closed, Chapel steps away, focused on family, personal growth, and the next stage of his life, leaving behind a career filled with resilience, achievement, and hard-earned perspective.
