One of Joe Rogan’s favorite heavyweight boxing fights is George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle on January 24, 1976. It was one of the most epic battles, with two heavy hitters trading punches and knocking each other down multiple times. But Foreman showed greater will to win and knocked out Lyle in the 5th round.

George is biologically very unusual. I mean, he had canned hams for fists, gigantic fists. And boy, you know, one of my favorite alltime heavyweight wars was him and Ron Lyle. That was an insane fight. Insane. All the knockdowns, both guys rocked and hurt. Yep. And Ron Ly is another one of those guys just kind of lost in the the history books, you know, people sort of forgot except for that fight. You know, there’s a few of those guys that like people just kind of forgotten. They attached them to one fight because they didn’t ever have that shining moment again in their career.

  1. Ron Lyle was an insane specimen. He started boxing in prison in his 30s I believe. He got his guts cut out by a guy and almost died on the operating table…..then he had all those fights after that, geezuz

  2. Lyle was in the penitentiary for 8 years – 2nd degree murder – killed at least 2 men (i might be wrong) before turning to boxing.

His brother Michael died in Vietnam and his grandfather from his father's side was a bootlegger but the rest of his grandparents were Church people (Bishops and missionaries)!

He sparred with Cassius before the Fight of the Century (71') and was also trained in Catskills (probably with CuS).

He won the bout with Shavers because Shavers couldn't go the distance but he did get floored by Shavers with a left upper-cut, "I've never been hit like that."

Lyle knocked down George twice in his prime when George was killing guys with his stare.

LiSToN stood up to George and nobody stood up to George.

I always like the fact that all these guys gave Cassius dementia and shut his mouth

  3. Ron Lyle beat Earnie Shavers. Was never dropped by Shavers. Yet Big George dropped Ron and Stopped him. So, I say George hit harder than Lyles. Ron extended his straigh right. That was the only harder punch than George´s.

  4. I'd like to watch George Foreman's fights but really Joe Rogan you got no credibility you've turned into such a dirtbag. I used to think that you were somewhat intelligent now I think you're just a pawn.

  5. He was far better than alo remember. Ali just cheated by holding foreman neck down while never being called for it. Ref was probably bride and the rope were lose to favor ali dodging. Ali couldnt stop foreman to cut the ring and come close at punch range.

  6. IF RON LYLE HAD TRAINED A LITTLE MORE AND A LITTLE HARDER, I KNOW HE WOULD HAVE WON THAT FIGHT.

  7. The 1970’s for the heavyweight division was an era that was filled with absolutely brutal monsters. It’s a testament to the greatness of Muhammad Ali that he dominated that period.

  8. A lot of people forget that Bug George also won an Olympic Gold medal. But yeah , Ron Lyles was indeed a monster! I never knew what became of him?

  9. I like that, Bob Beal beat Pete Rademacher in the 1956 Olympic trials but broke his hand. Thats lost history. Check out Bob's Brutus Beal golden gloves of Illinois

  10. That was a total slugfest with Howard Cosell saying something like "utterly without boxing skill" because neither fighter had a defensive strategy at all, both guys chasing the KO.

  11. Definitely one of my favorite fights and fighters. But when Ron got hit by Shavers he went down like he got hit with a cinder block, then came back to knock out Shavers… WOW!!!!
