Max Greyserman reflects on his bogey-free 67 in tough, windy conditions at the new Baycurrent Classic venue in Yokohama. The American praises the creative Pinehurst-style setup, the respectful Japanese fans, and recalls the heartbreak of last year’s near-miss against Nico Echavarria. Now, back in Japan, Greyserman is chasing redemption and his first PGA TOUR win — “Maybe this time, I can get it done.”
All right, Max. Um, Bogey 367 out there. Can you just assess your round today? It was solid round. Very, very, very difficult conditions. Very windy. Uh, front’s pretty getable. Back nine’s a lot tougher, especially the finishing holes. I think overall I played played nice, played pretty good. So, just keep doing what I’m doing. Very happy with how today went. Obviously could have always been better, but in those difficult conditions, I’ll take that any day. And it’s a new course this year. Um, so conditions are different. Do you just I know it’s the first compet competitive round out there. So, anything that you’re seeing out there that you really like? Yeah. Yeah. I I really like the golf course. It’s different than last year’s golf course. Last year would be it it was more straightforward test. Can you kind of narrow? Can you put the ball in play? Can you put on the green? Kind of flat greens. And this this golf course is very much like maybe northeast golf. A lot of slope uh on the golf course around the greens on the greens. So, a lot lot of runoffs. A lot of runoffs. bunkers, fairway fairway runoffs. So, I enjoy playing that style of golf. Maybe like a pinehurst number two type of golf where everything’s shaved around the greens. So, I think it’s more maybe more fun to play. There’s more creativity. It’s kind of like link sea golf around the greens a little bit. Um, so yeah, it’s a fun test. It’s a different test. I think it’s might be one of the best courses we play all year to be honest. And with that, you finished runner up last year. Obviously, a different course, but what about playing in Japan? Seems to fit your game. Yeah, I love playing in Japan. It’s a great culture. Uh, respectful people, respectful fans. Um, you know, in the US, I don’t usually get claps when I get to 30 feet. And here I do. I feel like they maybe look at golf more of like an art form where they’re trying to learn, especially when I’m on the range and stuff. I see people trying to imitate my swing and stuff like that, whereas in the US it’s more of like an entertainment product. Yeah. So, it’s it’s fun being over here. Good food, too. I’m not going to complain about that. Awesome. any any specific memories from the final round Sunday last year battling with Nico and Justin? Yeah. Yeah. Um we we all battled really hard. We were all close. I remember my biggest memories I remember being in the lead and Nico burning 16 and 18. So I didn’t like that too much but fun good memories like very competitive. Um, felt like felt like I was maybe going to win that one, but Nico Nico got it done that week, so maybe I can get it done this week. Thank you, Matt. Thank you.
