Butch Harmon on Golf Channel’s Academy Live Living Room Lesson. Classic clip from Butch Harmon trying to fix a golfers tendency to hit fat golf shots. Butch explains how to correct the golf swing flaw with two simple tips. These tips will help any golf swing.
Generally hitting the golf ball fat means your swing arc is bottoming out before the golf ball. That is the problem 100% of the time. But how do you fix that problem? You need to bring that bottom of your swing arc after the golf ball and towards the target.
Butch explains why you may be hitting the ground before the ball. It is likely one of two problems. See video for details.

Jeff in Ohio tell us your swing trouble sir hi Peter hi Butch I have a problem with my um leaving at divots um hitting about two or three inches behind the ball about 20% of the time and I’m not sure how to control that the divots are nice and square but I just about about 20% of the time I hit behind the ball well there’s two things that happen when you hit the ball fat number one is you could be losing the club at the top in your grip and as you start down you grab the club again as you grab it you end up throwing it this car cuses you to reach the bottom of your Arc sooner an easy way to check that out is just see if you’re wearing out a spot in the Palm on your glove right here that tells you that you’re letting go of this club and as you start down you’re grabbing it the other reason you hit the ball fat is because of a lack of a weight transfer in other words a feeling of your weight staying back here which causes you to throw the club from the top so what I would have you do is I’d check your your grip pressure if you’re losing this club and once again you’ll know from this we worn out spot get your cup in your hands a little better where you’ve got a hold of it and then really let your weight transfer to your left side don’t feel like you’re staying behind the ball actually feel like you’re moving ahead of the ball or you’re letting your head rotate early like a David dealer and that’ll really help you when you talk about the release what are you releasing and what where are you releasing it to well people get confused with the release they think that our hands work that way and in reality our wrist just hinge this way if we think about it we go to the top we hit the ball and we come back this way what you want to feel for a right-handed player is a right forearm releasing over the left forearm let the elbows bend a good drill is to let these elbows re hinge themselves feel like you’re letting your elbows re hinge we saw that in our living room lesson with Ed where he tended to be too much out here when you hit balls just feel like both your elbows re hinge themselves that’ll give you good release
