PGA Tour star Justin Thomas joined the broadcast team during the final round of the RSM Classic on Sunday and provided an update on how he is doing after undergoing back surgery earlier this month.
Thomas announced on Nov. 14 that he had been dealing with pain in his back and hip, which forced him to undergo a microdiscectomy.
He shared where he is at physically on Sunday.
“I’m feeling pretty good, all things considered,” Justin Thomas said. “It’s doing a whole lot of nothing. And happy to hear your guys’ voices again.”
The 32-year-old Thomas was also asked if he has a timeline for when he will return to the course or at least begin swinging a club again.
As this point, it is too early to say when he will be back in action, but he is planning to take his time with the rehab process.
“Not really. I mean, I’m just taking it really slow,” Thomas said. “Jim Furyk once told me nobody’s ever come back too late from an injury. I’m very fortunate. In golf we can play this into our mid-to-late 40s and still be competitive.
“The main reason of doing this is so it doesn’t bother me anymore in my career and in my future. So I’m going to take the rehab and recovery very seriously. When the time is right I’ll get back to it, but I’m just taking it one day at a time right now.”
As Thomas is going through the recovery process, he is watching a ton of golf. He said that he doesn’t mind being away from the competition, at least not yet.
However, he knows that at some point in the rehab process, he will.
“I’d say the Hero [World Challenge] will probably be hard to watch, the Father/Son (PNC Championship), like those events that I was supposed to be a part of and playing, those will probably be a little harder to watch,” Justin Thomas said. “But I’m kind of a freak. I like to watch golf, even when I’m not playing. … Get back to me in a couple of months and my answer might be different, but I’m fine with it now.
