What does the correct golf swing feel like? Many golfers like you have tried to answer this crucial question. Today you discover that what you feel in the golf swing is nothing like you’ve been taught.
Back in the early 2000s, Tom Watson revealed what he called “The Secret to the Golf Swing”. It’s also been referred to “Tom Watson’s Secret”. In his secret, he shares what you must do to strike the golf ball well AND how the body works in the correct golf swing.
Watson arrived at his secret after years of struggling to control his ball flight. Eventually after many hours of practice (and probably 1000s of practice balls) he figured out the golf swing. And it revitalized his game as well as his golf ball striking.
Many golfers are familiar with Tom Watson’s drill used in his secret. You see it everywhere – on the first tee, on the driving range, at the supermarket. It’s a popular drill… yet there’s a crucial flaw. Most golfers implement this drill incorrectly. They get the drill part right BUT when it comes to doing it in their swings, it doesn’t work. So most golfers can’t access Tom Watson’s secret no matter how hard they try.
I’ve seen many golfers doing this drill on the range recently and felt compelled to make this video. A video that will help you move your body correctly in the golf swing and finally access Watson’s secret. The moment you do my drill you will experience the secret. No more guessing. The golf swing finally revealed to you.
Hint – the correct golf swing feels nothing like you’d expect it to feel like. Let’s dive in.

go out to any driving range today and I seem to be seeing a lot of people doing this drill, the classic shoulder turn club drill to get you feeling the correct swing. And it reminds me of a video that Tom Watson did many years ago called the secret of the golf swing. And he described that the secret of the golf swing was getting his shoulders to turn in a barrel on a tilted angle to the ground. If you can make your shoulders work this way there on your back swing and then return this on the same plane as this right here, this line right here there like that. That’s the secret to the golf swing. So, you can think about this drill as being probably the most basic but most popular golf swing drill ever taught because you see it everywhere. And it’s really a good drill because to strike the ball well, you need to turn your shoulders in a relationship with the ground. That’s how that’s the only way the club is going to find the ground. That’s how you take a nice crispy divot after the ball. So, there’s a flaw with this drill, and it’s something that never gets talked about, and the flaw is not necessarily the drill, but it is the way golfers are implementing it. So, I’ll see a golfer do this drill correctly. They’ll get over it, they’ll turn their shoulders, and you’ll see this beautiful tilt down towards the ground. You see the front shoulder lower than the trail shoulder. Everything looks good, but then they get a club in their hands and it’s like we’ve lost the drill entirely. So instead of this, I see all sorts of things. This this pick the club up shifting nothing like the drill. And so, while this is a great drill concept, it’s one of the worst implemented in golf history. That’s why today I want to take this drill that is so popular and turn into something useful for you so you can recreate the perfect feeling shoulder turn time and time again. This drill will get you much more consistent contact. It’s going to increase your shoulder turn, get you a bigger back swing, more power, less effort. Your body will be working so much better, just like it does in the drill. This brings me to what a good golf swing feels like. And it feels nothing like you think. So, a lot of golfers when they do this drill, your body is being put into a few different positions. I’m going to put it basic for you, but your spine is going through a process of tilting, turning, and extending all in this move. When a golfer gets a club in their hands, it’s kind of hard to take this feel now. And then I got a club down here. So where’s the There’s nothing across my chest. I can’t just put something across my chest and swing. So now I’m stuck. What do I do next? We have to train the spine to do those moves. And what does that feel like? Well, I’m going to go back to Tom Watson in the barrel example. He feels like he’s turning his shoulders in a barrel on a tilted angle. What does that look like right here? If I have a cylinder, I rotate it. Let’s just say my shoulders are this cylinder. I’m going to rotate them in a circle. Think about your spine as being that cylinder. Where golfers get this wrong is that they think too linear in their swing or they swing just their arms. The correct golf swing feels like you’re rotating a cylinder on a tilted angle. It feels like you’re upside down. So when I swing this club, when I get to the top, my body is in an entirely different position. That cylinder makes me feel like this. I feel like I’m down here. My lead shoulder’s touching my lead knee. My chest has then shot up to the sky as a result. And this is how you get your body working. This is really what the drill does for you. The drill is this cylinder. The swing is in a feel dipping the shoulder down changing my spine in this cylinder. So, when you hit golf balls, and this goes out to a lot of my senior players out there, because your body, you might think your body is stuck or it can’t turn. It can’t, you don’t have much range of motion, and that’s because you’re so used to swinging your arms and your shoulders, and nobody showed you how to turn in a cylinder. Nobody showed you how to turn while keeping your tilt to the ground. That’s why I want every golfer out there to change to a crazy feel right now. If you’re watching this video, do this crazy feel. Just do it for fun. Watch what happens to your body. I want you to take your front shoulder, dip it down to the ground, and as if we’re going to the middle of the stance. So, I want to touch this shoulder down here. A few things you’re going to be feeling right now. You’ve got tilting down. Another really cool thing is the hip turn. Look at that. The lower body reacts. Everything’s connected. So, this is that same thing you’re getting with the shoulder turn drill. Dip it down. and try and harness this upside down feeling. Chest is at the sky. Your spine is more extended when you grip a club. Now, do the same thing with me. Get the shoulder down to the ground. This is going to impact some serious change in the way you guys move the club. This is how you turn on a tilted angle. Get that shoulder down. It’s one of the reasons why not only Tom Watson said this is the best key to the golf swing, but it’s why Arnold Palmer said lead shoulder pointing at the ball. The whole idea was keeping your swing on a tilted angle. That’s the golf swing. And to do that, you’re turning in this cylinder that we gradually keep tilting more and more down to the ground. And that’s how the entire body works. When you don’t, if at any point you stop this tilt, you stop feeling upside down, that’s when you get into your old arms only swing that looks like this. It’s the most common position you’ll see a lot of senior players get here because they’re afraid to open up their body. And if you’re a senior player and you’re afraid of this, it’s just because no one’s taught you to get there. But that’s where you need to go. I just taught a guy the other day. I said, “Hey, got to nudge that front shoulder down.” That is entirely different than the old. It’s like you’re trying to get your shoulder to touch the stick on the way down. On the way back, doing a practice motion where you do that. You’re really trying to touch that stick. Yes. Yes. That’s it. What’s that feel like? Um, yeah. Feels different. Very different. Like I’m getting my my chest that direction. Okay. Yeah. It’s like you’re like Yeah. Yeah. Your chest is up in the sky. Dropping that shoulder to here. I’m going to remove the stick once. All right. Nice. That’s better. Way better. Okay. Good strike. Wow. That was really crisp. That was nice. Pretty amazing. Yeah, that felt really good. And uh I haven’t hit a ball like that in a week and a half. Attach an anchor to your front shoulder. What happens? You do that, boom down, and he drops that anchor. You see the hips turn and the whole body responds. And there’s the back swing. It’s the cylinder. Boom. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

Senior golfers concerned about a "lack of flexibility" keep this in mind…
These moves work with your body's normal range of motion. Some of these moves may look new or feel different to you, that's normal at first.
If you watch later in the video around 8:28 you can see a senior golfer implementing these exact same moves with ease. I never want you doing something that causes pain, and, when teaching, I regularly check in with the student and what their feeling. This helps me teach them more effectively and ensure they can perform the move without issue.
In this lesson the student said the new moves "felt different" but they were not painful. His body went through the normal process of learning something new.
In short, you're designed to tilt, turn, and extend!
It's a normal spine move.
Here's the difference – you've been told that you're not flexible enough or that you need to go to the gym for power. This is false!
The average senior golfer can do these moves. Don't fall for limiting beliefs. Break THROUGH the barrier of your old, restrictive swing feels. Once you change, your body feels open and free.
Will you take the first step?

Short answer?: crispy……….
When I do shoulder down my head moves down and forward and I get way too steep, like 9 down with my 7 iron, how do you fix too stacked?
I have a question as I don’t hit really top tier strikes very often.
My best golf shots on the downswing feel like I’m a coiled spring releasing. It just feels like I’m not controlling a lot of the swing and my body just rotates around my axis and the arms have little feeling in them. Another way to describe the feeling is like an elastic band being stretched and then released.
Does this sound familiar and is this what a perfect swing and strike feels like?
Thank you for this, Tom! Can’t wait to try it at the range tomorrow (haven’t played in a week. Yikes)
after having a decent swong then being taken away from the game for over a year, i wanted to throw my clubs innthe trash sunday. im gonna try n get back to basics
Tom, getting shoulder down on backswing was never a problem. The key to making S&T work for me is to concentrate on aiming my right shoulder at the ball and through on the downswing. When I locked in that move, I started to strike the ball much more consistently because I moved left more effectively.
Can you golf 12 months a year where you are?
Thanks Tom. Another simple video. Explained well. Good practice up north well knee deep in snow. 🇨🇦
Finally dressing like the true pro teacher that you are, nice but hem the pants to the correct length as the bottom bags are 5 years out of style.
Must you also focusing on keeping the left hip from moving away from target or just let the rotation spin?
Tom, I think it is essential to keep your elbows together to get this to work. Once you keep the elbows together, you feel the shoulders and arms work together as a unit. It's then a lot easier to feel the shoulder turning in a circle. Your airplane wings drill gets you to feel the shoulder going down, the the elbows together allows you to achieve shoulder down when you are holding a club. Thanks. Dave
Your other video about keeping the right elbow connected to the body helped me break 90 for the first time! Thank you bro 🎉
How do you prevent not then raising your left shoulder too vertically then casting and creating a scooping action .. i am struggling with your videos of turning and presetting weight forward
In person lesson tomorrow?
Well Tom u asked so here it is
I feel the shoulder down on the backswing is not where it all goes to crap for me. I can do that. It’s unwinding that from the top that’s the issue. You showed how so many golfers turn flat.. Why is that? Because they can unwind that from the top in a way that makes sense. It’s wrong, and terribly inconsistent, but from a balance standpoint makes sense to our senses…I can’t count how many times I’ve went shoulder down then flattened it all out on the way down n hit the biggest pull hook on planet earth. I don’t know how to unwind it in a proper sequence. You’re %10000 right, shoulder down is soooooo critical. I just feel unwinding it properly is the true secret… just my opinion. You r by far the best out there.!!!!
Tom, I've been following you since your mutton chop days all the way to the Ron Jeremy era, but I still can't consistently get the lead shoulder DOWN consistently. Are there any other swing-thoughts that might resonate with my lizard brain? And what of the hands and arms? Are they just "along for the ride" after the shoulder goes DOWN properly? Crispily yours.
Tom
I have a question. I understand what you’re saying about the backswing. I tried it today and it felt and looked good. Do you want the right shoulder to go down “ feel wise “ thru impact? When I feel I am going down on the backswing, I could feel myself springing up thru the ball. It felt good. But do I want to feel more right shoulder down thru the ball like I felt left shoulder down on the backswing? Thanks
This video really helps me feel a proper turn in the backswing. Can’t wait to try it on the course! 🏌🏻
Hello Tom,, I hope you get to see my review amongst all you have and I know you are super busy but I had to respond! Absolutely loe your videos!! I am a senior 69 years young golfer and am hitting much better after watching 3 so far of your videos.. Weight foward really helped me just as you had said! Full shoulder turn is a must and we forget to ingrain it during our swing. I am playing about a 13 again,, and I personally wanted to thank you. Although I play only executives at this point in my life it does not matter as your tips apply to any swing and any length!! If you were closer to me in San Diego I would take a few lessons,, but doubt i can afford you,,, LOL,,,, keep up the great work!!! Sincerely, Richard Gonzalez
