You might recognize this type of golf swing in yourself or someone else. Little bit inside, little bit over the top. Or what I want you to think about today is light then heavy. This is what I mean. The reason I really like this quick tip is because it one, it’s simple, but two, it’s really kind of creates a sort of aha awareness of what you might be doing that’s causing a few problems. And it really is a simple concept to understand to go from heavy to light to light to heavy. The beauty of this, it kind of fixes, if you will, a lot of issues that are plaguing you when you’re out on the golf course. One of the main ones is kind of an over-the-top sort of swing. And that happens because the club gets pulled behind us a little bit too much. And when it gets pulled behind us, we have to compensate. And our instincts make us go that way. We need to tap into an understanding that the swing isn’t just about movements of the body. It’s reactionary or at least we need to make it just a little bit more reactionary than maybe you’re currently doing. And the way I’m trying to show you is if we feel and create awareness of what this club head is doing, you’ll be very surprised at how well you, yes you, your body can adapt and improve its sequence and movements to be just easier. You are better than you think you are. Because when we make it simple, you will not be getting in your own way. This is not about specific positions. This is about you translating the intentions and the cues that I’m going to give you. I want you to toy with it. I want you to play with it and let me know in the comments below what you feel. And you can even get up and grab a club and try this with me and notice if you’re doing it. But the feeling is, and we want you to close your eyes when you’re doing this. Okay? So, the feeling I’m going to have as I swing back, I just want the club incorrectly to feel heavy. I want the club to feel like it’s heavy, that it’s pulling me, that the gravity is sort of winning, that it’s pulling me down and around. It’s feeling heavy. Okay. So, the club feels heavy. I’m sort of laid off. It’s over here. But it’s really more on the takeaway that I want to feel the club feeling heavy. I’m letting it droop. I’m letting it sag down. It’s heavy. So now to make any kind of intention and good contact with the ball, I’ve got to really put effort back in to bring it back towards the target and the ball on that target line here. And I can only do that by the club feeling lighter. It’s lighter in my hands than it was just a moment ago. That’s what I mean when it goes heavy to light. And that really ruins my sequence and everything that I do to make contact with the ball. We have to reverse that. Now I’m doing it with my eyes closed, but I want this club to feel lighter. It’s feeling like I’m supporting it a little bit more. Almost like I’m holding an umbrella. If I was running to hold an umbrella above my head, I wouldn’t be letting it fall that way. I’m feeling the weight of it here. And you notice I just automatically I was closing my eyes to create that awareness and connection. So, I’m feeling like, yeah, I can stay there all the time. That club head feels light because I’m supporting it. Doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m hinging the wrist straight up, but it feels that the club is light. When I do that, the club is light. From here, I want it to feel heavier into impact. I’m not really trying to shallow. I’m not rotating the forearms because the forearms do not want to rotate. We’ll talk about that in another lesson. I am feeling this club head just get a little bit heavier as I start my down swing. This is exaggerating. Okay, we don’t want it doing this much, but with that sort of goal intention of feeling a little bit heavier, I can get into the slot nicely. And then I can release through. And what that does, that creates the plane that we want. And it creates that flow and whoosh that I want. If I do the opposite, it doesn’t have the same effect. It doesn’t have that natural sequence that you can rely on, especially as you get older. Remember, I said this is about you playing with this a little bit, translating it a little bit. When you make your takeaway, don’t worry about specific positions. Just have it feel a little bit lighter. We do not want to just be picking it up on the outside and hinging here and then sort of turning. Okay? It’s just a little bit lighter, supporting it with our body, taking it back with our core. Then we’re feeling heavier. That club head feeling a little bit heavier in the transition and swinging through. It’s that simple. After you’ve done some practice with your eyes closed, creating some awareness, you can use a mirror, but I always prefer things to feel more internal. Create the connections that way rather than external on camera or mirrors. However, what I always will tell you to do is start small. So, I’m just trying to be aware of does that feel lighter? Even at that position here, does it feel heavier as I start to move down? Am I executing what I am trying to accomplish? Once I start building that foundation and that flow, you’ll realize it’s a lot more athletic to feel like it’s just a little tennis shot, whatever it might be. The golf swing can be like that. It’s not about big shallowing. It’s just making it much more natural and responding to the weight of the club head. This can guide you a lot more than you allow it to. You can respond with consistency to what this does if you allow it. I hope that lesson makes sense for you. It’s going to make a big difference, but start small, put it into some practice, and you will start closing the gap of your consistency issues. Now, if you want to make sure that your entire swing is good from tea to green, this lesson that we had on YouTube a little while ago is going to help you a ton. See you next time.
