Throwing a Dart and Playing Golf Where it Lands: TEXAS
Earlier this year, I threw a dart at a map of the US and played golf where it landed. Before I even got home, I knew I wanted to do it again. And I thought, could this be a series? And apparently, a lot of you had the same idea. So, I got to thinking, what if I played golf in every state? What if I threw a dart at a map of every state one by one until I’ve played them all? Well, today is the start of that journey, and we’re playing in my home state of Texas. And after that, well, that’s for you to decide. I can’t believe that this has happened twice in a row. We’ve thrown a dart and it ended up in like a literal hidden gem. What did I got myself into? About sundown tonight, there’s going to be an electricity around here. I have no idea how I keep getting so lucky. One of the coolest communities of all time. This is Blind Approach and today we’re in Texas. Oh, is it time? Today’s the day. So, I was born around here in Houston, Texas, in a little place called Baytown. I currently live here in Austin, Texas. This is about 3 hours away. We got you something. You got me something? Yeah, we got you something. Oh, shoot. Wa. And so, we’re going to leave right after this. Yeah, I think we just get in the car. I think no planning. I’m down. Like, no idea where we stay. Just like last time. All right. Wherever we land, I’m going to get coordinates from these good people here, and I’m going to plug it into my GPS, and I’m just going to start driving here. There it is. Oh my god, that’s such good. Is it? Like, you have no idea. Shoot. So, we’re on Highway 183 heading north out of Austin. I still have no idea where we’re going. Last time we did this when I flew to Chicago, it was really annoying being on the airplane and not having any idea when I was going to land. I’m starting to have that same feeling right now where I don’t know how long I’m going to be sitting in this front seat. Not having any control, not having any knowledge of what’s happening is it’s concerning to say the least. I don’t know who I’m about to meet. I don’t know what golf course it’s going to be. I don’t know if it’s going to be good content. In all likelihood, I’m going to a place that I’ve never been before. And it’s just due to the sheer land mass of where I live. It would be really cool if we went to El Paso. You know, Teringa would be sick. I would love to play Litus. I don’t know, man. There’s so many options and that’s the that’s the whole point of this. We make our first pit stop in Briggs, Texas, about 30 minutes from the city limits of Austin. So, where are you boys heading? I literally have no idea. your own have a stop sign in your back. Wait, why do you have a stop sign? I don’t know. I just bought the vehicle, so it was part of it. It was already in there. Yeah. Oh, yeah. We aren’t 30 minutes into the trip and we are in the middle of nowhere. I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re not even close to our final destination. All right, we are currently in Bangs, Texas. We stopped at the Alups gas station. I picked up a pair of sunglasses I thought were cool. You know, that’s the thing about me. I’m I’m a huge fan of buying things I don’t need from gas stations. I can’t tell you how many gas station shirts that I’ve bought. You know, the company like the tractor company Caterpillar. I bought a CAT shirt like 2 weeks ago. It looks like we’re going west. I don’t know if we’re about to head back north after that, but uh you know, could be right down the road. I have no idea. Turns out it isn’t right down the road. We drive through the Texas plains for hours. I just need to remind myself that this is a good mindfulness exercise in letting go of control and going with the flow. We drive past miles of wind turbines and pump jacks through a canyon with a really cool name. And finally, just when I think we’re going to run out of Texas, I’m told we’re only a few minutes away. All right, we made it. This doesn’t feel like my perception of Texas. It’s just so foreign to me. So, it seems that we’re just east of Leach, Texas, which is home of the uh Texas Tech Raiders. And yeah, I mean, we made it. We made it right up to the panhandle. All right. Well, there’s only one thing to do now, and that’s to find the nearest golf course. Okay. So, I’m going to go ahead and search golf course. Oh, there’s actually one right here. Lorenzo Country Club. Oh man. Yeah, it looks like it’s in a bit of disrepair. Okay, Lorenzo Country Club. It’s 6 minutes away. It’s literally right down the road. I pretty much landed a dart on a golf course. I don’t know how they’re going to react when we roll in with cameras, but uh I guess we’ll find out. Lorenzo Country Club, your friends play here, one mile south. Oo, it’s getting close. What is this? Last time we said Alaska Golf Club was the most random golf course in the United States. I was wrong. It is Lorenzo Country Club in Lorenzo, Texas. What is happening here? The clubhouse seems to not really exist. This is obviously a an abandoned building. So, I imagine at one point this was, you know, like they were trying to make this a like a true country club with some amenities, a general membership, but it seems to have fallen into a bit of disrepair. What have I got myself into? How’s it going? Hey, how’s it going? Good. How’s it going? My name’s Keer. Walking into a clubhouse in the middle of nowhere with cameras is more stressful than you’d imagine. I awkwardly introduce myself to the only person in the building and do my best to explain why we are there. I’m out here with Albert. He is uh one of the owners of this golf club as a member. It’s a member owned organization. Member owned. Yes, that’s correct. Yeah, we’ve got 100 members. Tomorrow we have a scramble. We get about 60 players. 60. 60. Oh, wa. Yeah. When tomorrow? Tomorrow. Yeah. You should have come tomorrow. I’m curious. We have three people here. Yep. You’re more than welcome. Really? Yeah. We can sign you up. Okay. You want to go see the course? Yeah. Yeah, I would love to do that. I can go I can go grab my clubs and we can uh let me get some keys and we’ll get some golf carts. Okay, sounds good. This could have gone a lot of ways and I’m not even remotely disappointed. I’m actually pretty psyched. To my relief, he’s happy to show us around and agrees to tell us a little bit about Lorenzo Country Club. So, when when did you start golfing? I started when I was about 50. I had a golf course back then and my son was in college and they were he took golf in college. He took me one day said, “You want to go with us, Dad?” My three sons went after about three or four holes. Said, “You want to hit one, Dad?” And that was it. I hit one. I nailed it. I said, “Oh, this game’s for me.” That got me hooked after that. They couldn’t keep me out of the golf course. I got significantly outdriven. I mean, Albert’s got a little bit of speed on him. He does. He does have some speed. Oh, good shot. Thank you. That’s my normal shot. That’s my normal shot. This guy, this guy played some golf. It turns out Lorenzo CC is a 9hole memberowned course. I’m told they’ve recently undergone several improvements, including a new well provided by a guy named Greg, but we’ll meet him soon enough. They seem to be doing a pretty good job. The course is in much better condition than the Google Maps images would lead me to believe. After playing one hole, we decide we’d rather save the rest of the course for the following day when we attend the scramble. Yeah, it’s really nice. I love playing out here. It’s really quick from my house. I live in Idaloop. It’s like 10 minutes away from here, so it’s super convenient. How often are you playing out here? Uh, I play about like three times a week out here. Four time three to four times a week. What grade are you in? I’m a freshman. Freshman in high school. Yes, sir. Nice. Oh, wow. Yeah, that’s a hell of a golf swing. Thank you. Before we leave, Senior tells us about the goat run. It’s a onehole contest that happens after the scramble. You pay $10 and you tee off on one and anybody has a loan score where nobody will tie him, they win that pot. I think it’s already up to 2,500. You’re saying like like so many weeks have gone by where everybody’s tied the whole so I need $70 to participate, right? If you want to win the whole thing. I want to win the whole thing. There you go. Hunter, what do you think about the place? I love it. This is kind of like the dream setup. You know, this is a real hidden gem. You can’t get an actual hidden gem unless you take an actual dart and throw it nowhere. And then you find a golf course no one’s actually ever heard of because this doesn’t exist on the internet. You can’t be hidden gem unless you’re willing to legitimately get lost. So, we’ve accomplished two of the goals that we’ve set out so far. We got to our point and found the nearest golf club. Uh we found somebody to play with tomorrow. Random golf club. Random golf club. Yeah. Just look it up. Okay. Anywhere you find it. The next goal that we have is to find somewhere to stay tonight. It looks like the closest place to stay is going to be in LC, which is like 20 minutes away. But we do have a new goal, and that new goal is to win Lorenzo Country Club’s threeman scramble. Can y’all like sign my scorecard or something? Yeah, of course. Yeah, I am like super psyched. I can’t believe that this has happened twice in a row that we that we’ve thrown a dart and it ended up in like a literal hidden gem with like really interesting people. There are so many super boring golf courses out there and I don’t know, we just did it again. You know, this is a very cool spot. We still need to find somewhere to stay with no hotels or Airbnbs in the area. The closest room we’re able to rent is in nearby LEC, Texas. It’s a small city by Texas standards, but it feels like Chicago or New York compared to Lorenzo or Idoloo. Yeah. So, this is the pride and joy of Leic, Texas. No objects thrown cuz you know the thing, right? What? Well, you know what they do at Tech? No. What do they do at Tech? Student tradition at Texas Tech’s home football games is getting heat from the team’s coach. Legend goes that the tra tradition of throwing tortillas onto the football field can be traced back to the 80s or 90s. If you’re throwing tortillas more than once, now it becomes all about you. You came to the game and you love this team and you’re passionate about this team, but yet you’re going to throw another tortilla. On the way out, we notice one of the stadiums gates is open. These opportunities don’t come often, so we take it as an invitation. I can respect the cathedral they’ve built to the game of football here. It really is beautiful. It’s what it must have been like for the peasants looking up at the at the Parthonon in fifth century AD. You know, I bet that was cool. It’s so wild that I ended up here in this stadium. That dart could have landed anywhere else. It could have it could have landed anywhere else and we’re having a different experience. But somehow I am in the Texas Tech football stadium because they left the gate open. This is how you get arrested. We’ll get them out. We’ll get them out. We got to win the tournament tomorrow for sure. as soon as those feet touched her. Seconds of the quarter. Second down. Throw to the end zone. Touchdown Texas Tech. What a drive. Let’s go to the Airbnb. Yeah, let’s go to the Airbnb. We made it to the Airbnb. This used to be an old uh courthouse on an old uh post office. Cool. Built in 1931 right here. Wa! Look at this door. Oh, that’s really cool. This was somebody’s office. No, this the courtroom itself is This is crazy. Oh my four bedrooms. Two bath and a half. I told you it was going to be two. Yeah. Oh, this is awesome. Have you guys seen Harry Potter? Yeah. Okay. But the the walls are nice. Wa. Are these the judges chambers? Chamber of Secret. There he goes. That’s cool. Secret door. Yes. Other than that, you guys enjoy. Hey, I appreciate it. Thank you so much. You guys have good, man. Thank you. Where do you want to go for dinner? Um, uh, there’s a Chims here. You know, we can get a Chim Chunga. I think they call it the Gut Rocket. The taco slam. You get a DP shootout, which is, uh, Dr. Pepper mixed with something and then they give you four straws, but you share it with your boy and you each use two straws. That can’t be real. I’m not lying. This is I’m not making any of this. We’re not going there. We’re not going there. You want to get the gut rocket? They got nachos, too. Like, it’s a It’s a big plate of nachos. We could just share it. We’re not going to like This isn’t going to be one of those things where it cuts to us there, is it? No. Can’t be. After surviving the gut rocket, we’re back at Lorenzo Country Club. This is Greg, who I mentioned earlier. He owns a water well company in the area and is really the driving force behind the improvements that Lorenzo Country Club has seen in the recent years. I got involved in this deal a little over a year ago and uh I was here for a few months and they asked me to be on the board of directors and I thought shoot why not I’m not doing anything else and then I kind of caught the bug, you know, uh I’ve never been a part of a a board of any sort. I’ve never been a part of a country club ever and this was kind of my speed for our country clubs, just good old boys. People can bring a six-pack and uh go golf and drink a beer, you know, and that that’s our clientele, man. And and we we’ve kind of captured that and it’s it’s worked really really well for us. you know, you start thinking of a country club as a business and and that’s what it is, you know, and you got to run it like a business and and uh treat your members like customers and when we started doing that, you know, we went from, you know, 24 25 members a year ago to now over 100, you know, and people love what we’re doing right here within a 30 mile radius, you are uh 95% cotton crop, you know, farmland, you know, you go that way, 45 mi, you are 99% ranch. If you guys are going to be around town tonight, I don’t know if you are, we’re doing a Thursday night scramble, that is our like claim to fame. And this parking lot that you’re looking at will be chalk full. And uh and I’m not exaggerating when I tell you people will bring golf carts and they will bring them in stock trailers. Like like they got the horses out of them this morning. They bring their golf carts here to them tonight. It’s amazing. You know, everybody wants to win a couple thousand bucks. Absolutely. It’s fun. We’re going to enter the goat run tonight. We’re we’re going to be here for the scramble. We Oh, you already got You’re already in the goat run. I I saw your name this morning. That’s right. You’re going to love it. Of course, I know I’m the the brains and and the the looks behind the operation. This is the muscle. This is the muscle, man. I’m here because I enjoy the people that come and play, you know, and I love it. I just live down the road, so, you know, it’s close, you know. Do you play golf yourself? Yeah. He’s a ring and he cheats, you know, cuz he’s on these green. He’s on these greens every day, dude. So, he knows exactly how they roll. He sees them several times a day. You can see the way the slopes are in the morning right before the sun starts coming up. You get up there on top of it and you’ll see all this little I will say y’all’s green complexes are in great shape. Y’all do a y’all do a fantastic job. It just takes a lot of work. It just takes a lot of work. Also, this week we’re dropping our classics lineup for 2026. If you don’t know what the RGC classics are, they’re dayong events at some of the coolest golf courses in the world. We’re going to Cabba Citrus Farms, Tamarak, Landman, The Loop. We’re going back to Northwood in Chambers Bay. It’s super sick. You don’t want to miss out. You can hit the QR square or go to randomgolfclub.com and check it out. Oh, and if you sign up for the newsletter, you’re going to get early access and you don’t have to wait till Wednesday. So, check it out. So, breaking development, another board member, his name’s Dustin Moyers, he wants to like come scoop y’all up and take you somewhere where like we can hit some Dove Dove this afternoon after lunch. Yeah, you guys are up for it. Yeah, absolutely. Okay. No doubt. I should have brought more bullets, but I I’ll go get some. Get one, too. With some time to kill before the scramble and before Dustin takes us out hunting, we head to Pitchforks and Smoke Rings. It’s a twist on authentic Texas barbecue. We put these on around 5:30 this morning. So, we’re at the halfway mark wrapping. So, we got another 6 and 12, 7 more hours to go to this place that’s been in the family 43 years. You turn into that driveway, turn everything off out there. You know, it’s out there. So, give yourself an hour. Come in here, enjoy, listen to some music, chat with some buddies, whatever. Have a beer whenever we have free beer. Give yourself that hour because you you earned it. You deserve it. You know, doing tortillas with barbecue is probably something more people should do. Brisket, some burnt, dude. After we eat way too much barbecue, we head out to meet Dustin. He’s a member at Lorenzo Country Club and he’s agreed to take us out hunting. The golf course is kind of the uh like the cultural meeting place, you know. We built 21 new cart sheds. They’re all full. Um I mean it’s it’s pretty pretty rocking place right now. So we’re on a scramble team. Greg tell you about the goat run. Yeah. Yeah. That every everybody plays the first hole and uh guy won it last week but he only paid for three weeks. So he only ended up with 900 bucks. I think there’s still should be close to two grand in there tonight. Hey, get over here. Oh, get back in here. Come here. Get in. Down. Get again. We need uh a lot more. Not a lot of dove right now. A little too hot. This kid got two right off the bat. So, how old were you when the first time you went hunting? Uh probably seven or eight. Seven, right? Yeah. It was dove hunting or duck hunting? Uh deer hunting. Deer hunting. Yeah. Just my luck. I finally get a shot and the safety’s on. I try again and it’s jammed. Got him. We just fle it right here. No. Yeah. These are long drink. They’re They’re It’s a Finnish uh like liquor drink. It’s made with gin. Okay. Yeah. They’re found in Finland, actually. You’ll take a sixack. I was going to say I’ll try one out. There you go. This is a different version of citrus. And this is sugarfree if you prefer that. But they’re all That is real. That is really good. We end the hunt with only three dove. A little disappointing, but not empty-handed. Dustin invites us back to his barn for some drinks. And we learn how the membership works together to make Lorenzo Country Club a reality. A lot of it’s been done by like the members themselves instead of hiring people out and they’re saving more money by doing, you know, it themselves. Yeah. Cuz it is a memberowned organization. Correct. That’s right. Yeah. But I tell you, the person that’s really done the most is Greg. Greg’s Greg’s been the heart and soul behind this whole revamp, bring it back to what it used to be. So, Greg deserves 90% of the credit. He spends a lot of time out there. So, we’re about 28 hours into our journey to Lorenzo, Texas to visit Lorenzo Country Club. And the thing about Lorenzo Country Club is it’s Bob, the liquor store right down the street. Car’s long drink. I can’t think of a more crisp and refreshing beverage for a Thursday in the West Texas heat. So, I’m drinking the citrus flavor. It’s my favorite flavor. But if you want something on the lighter side, there is the sugar-free variety pack with citrus, pineapple, and peach flavors backed by popular demand. So, all you have to do to find the closest long drink to you is head over to longdink.com/rgc, punch your zip code in, and fill up your cooler. Back to the video. I’m kind of in charge of the third night out scramble, so I put y’all with me. Nice. Okay. Right on. I’m John Shuff. John. Good to meet you, man. Hey, good to meet you. Greg, you met him this morning. Greg Maddox. I’m playing with Greg. And so we’ll all nine play together. Nice. Okay. Yeah. Fun little group. Yeah, man. Well, y’all come up to the clubhouse and we’ll uh I got a bunch of watermelons I brought up here. Y’all, you like watermelons? Yeah, absolutely. Man, we’ll come on up. Pour some Everclear in there. Do the watermelon crawl. You know about that? The watermelon crawls. They pour ever clear and split watermelons and you get so drunk eating it you can’t walk. So, you have to do the watermelon crawl. There’s a song by Tracy Bird that goes by the same name. We we farm right over there. My dad’s house is right on the other side of that house and we got a little watermelon patch. We just we grow them to eat, not to sell or anything. We just But we got thousands of them out there. We can’t eat them. They They get They go wasted if we didn’t eat them. So, yeah. What do you got going here? You got the logo on yours? Yeah, that’s my little Lorenza Country Club [ __ ] stamp. I’m I’m riding deep with folk teens, but they clean though. Got my sound bar we ain’t turned on yet. This is my 16-year-old daughter, Mey. Say hi. Thank you. Let’s Let’s do it. I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen it. That’s a good touch. The magnets. Oh. Oh, yeah. Here’s here’s the deal, guys. They’ll do it full. And I will tell you from experience, 75 mi down the highway, they’ll hold a beer just like that. You get home, you’re like, “Oh my god.” Yeah. It’s not open container if it’s on the outside. Oh my god. Terrifying. Really? Terrifying. Really? So, we wound up with a flat tire. Freddy is fixing us up. He’s going to patch this hole real quick and then we’ll be off to the races. Yeah. And that’s one thing about these memor clubs is that you have they have to do all all of the things themselves. And uh you know, like Jojo just bought a hat and Dustin was the one who rang him up, the guy we were hanging out earlier at his farm. And you know, it’s it’s really cool to see. Hey, how’s it going? Terry Kirk. Hey, good to meet you. Are you the president of the club here? I am. When I got on, they had 24 members. I think we got 104. Man, y’all really turned this place around. Brought the right people with me tonight. Absolutely. Greg got us a well, donated, and put in new pumps. Just got the right people. You know what was incredible is these guys kept it going for years with no money, right? You know, and when they got me involved, I just said, “Man, I need some help.” So, I started going around getting other people and everybody just jumped on board. It’s been crazy. Yeah. We’re going to tear that mess down in that pool. Yeah. We’re going to get 20 people and we’re going to build a son of a gun. Big nice place that you could gather with more sheds. There’s a lot of good people involved. Freddy works his butt off keeping everything mowed and if it breaks he fixes it. Yeah. He just fixed flatten this golf cart right right before we came. But I’m talking bearings, gears, drive shafts, whatever. We don’t have to, you know, he takes care of all that. I heard y’all are playing tonight. You’re going to love it. Yeah, we’re excited to play. You can’t imagine the electricity involved. And then you heard about the goat run. We did. Yeah. And we’re going to we’re going to play in that as well after the after the scramble. Awesome. You know, last week, what was it? 2500 or something. Yeah, somewhere around 2,000. And some guy won it, but he had only paid for 3 weeks, so he only won like 900. So, it’s going to be close to 2,000 tonight. We’re going to play part three. Try to get it done a little bit quicker for sunlight. That way, we can do the goat run and everybody be happy. I picked all these watermelons today. We got thousands of them. Y’all take them home, eat them. I don’t care. I don’t want any more watermelon or cantaloupe. So, y’all take them. All right. Have fun. If you’ve never played in a shotgun start golf event, it’s where each group te’s off at the same time on a different hole. The energy is electric. All right. So, this is the first hole of the scramble. I feel strangely comfortable in this kind of environment. Where y’all been all day? We went out to Dustin’s and did a little dove hunting. Okay. Yeah. Where you going? Go, baby. Bring a bigger purse. Yeah. Get her. Ready? Ready woods. I never saw it. Man, can you follow me everywhere? And then my dumb ass does this. I swing that stuff and I look at it. I don’t know how many movies we had, but here’s the thing. I I don’t care that we’re playing that. I’m having a blast. As the scramble winds down, I take a step back and think about how wild it is that I ended up here. Statistically, there’s a 0001% chance that a dart thrown at a map of Texas lands on Lorenzo Country Club. And somehow it did. This is what we’ve heard about the entire time, more so than the scramble, is the goat run. Every single person has asked us if we’re doing the goat run. Yeah, we’re doing the goat run. 60 people are going to play the same hole. And if you win a skin on this hole with 60 people, you win upwards of two grand. So yeah, we’re going to do it. I’ve seen golf expressed a lot of ways in a community, but nothing quite like this. It’s more than just a golf course. It’s a combination of community center, town hall, and local watering hole. And I feel very lucky to have experienced it firsthand. Yes. Yes. In the goat run, the etiquette is a bit different. After everyone takes a second shot, we then go in order, starting from the person closest to the hole, working our way out. Once two people make a birdie, it’s a draw for the week. and the pot carries over to the next. If only one person makes an eagle or a birdie, however, they win it all. This guy wanted a little too bro. How crazy would it be if we saw someone win like two grand right now? Looks like a player. I think this guy makes it in. I think he wins that thing. Nope. Let’s do it. Keep going. Okay. Good speed. Good speed. Just a little short. Somebody kick it through the hole. Check. This is the last chance. Or this guy behind us wants 1,500 bucks. Hey Chris, I got tickets for film. Yeah, we need some tickets. This thing has been going on for weeks, like 10 weeks, and and they haven’t had anybody win it. This is sick. That guy won the whole thing. I have no idea how I keep getting so lucky. One dart in the middle of nowhere. Another dart in the middle of nowhere. And it ends up being like one of the coolest communities of all time. There you go, big dog. Nice. Congratulations, homeboy. KG out that money. There we go. Oh, lord. That’s amazing. That’s a lot. I’m getting a new purse. Mama. This is my favorite series to make. I really want to do this again. If you enjoy this content, just comment what state we should do next and the top comment I will print out a map of that state and I will throw a dart at it and I will fly there and uh I will go wherever the dart lands. So, if you enjoyed this, like it, subscribe it. I appreciate it. Thank you. And I mean that. Comment what state I should go to next and whichever state has the most comments and the most up votes, I’ll go there next. Thanks for watching.
