Kristen’s got a powerful, athletic swing – but like many golfers, she couldn’t quite compress her irons. The strike felt a little soft, and her misses were pulling left.
In this live lesson, Andy and Piers uncover the real reason: her swing was actually under plane. Once they helped her get back on plane, her ball striking transformed – straighter shots, crisp compression, and that pure strike every golfer wants.
You’ll learn:
✅ The key difference between being on plane and under plane
✅ How small setup and plane adjustments improve contact instantly
✅ What “compression” really means — and how to achieve it

Okay, Kristen, you’re in the golf industry. You don’t play loads of golf. You like all of us in the golf industry, right? Um what’s the what’s the current bad shot with your iron here? What tell me a little bit about your iron play here? My miss right now with the iron is a hook. Yeah. Um and that’s usually and then eventually if you have enough of those then I’ll get a push right trying to fix it. Yeah. Question for you then. Why do you think it happens? Why do you think you hook it? I think my body moves before my arms and then my arms are behind and coming over the top trying to catch up. Okay. Okay. Lovely. So the the reason I asked that question is that often what we think we are doing is not what’s actually going on. So what I want to do today I think the most important thing for you today Kristen is you go away clear and go oh I know exactly what’s going on and I know one thing that I can do to fix it. And and I think that’s where we’ll start. Let’s get a few shots first. Okay. Let’s see some of these snappers that you’ve hit. Don’t try and hit them. Swing as normal. They come naturally. We’ll look at some of the data. We’ll then dive into the golf swing and then we’ll help you understand first what’s going on. Okay. And then we’ll move into fixing it. Amazing. So, we got seven iron here. Yeah. Seven iron. Y. So, we’re going to just go towards the blue flag. Okay. Into the breeze, which is great. Love hitting into the breeze. It sort of shows up what’s going on. Beautiful. That was a good one, isn’t it? I mean, look at that. It it it shows that you’ve got some like great in there to hit a high draw. Most people watching this would love to be able to do that. Okay. But then we’ll just hit the one that’s just out of control left. Yes. Okay. Give me one more shot. All right. And there we go. There we go. Okay. And it’s that’s a big difference, isn’t it? That’s missing the green. You’ve really got to rely on a lot of short game for that. Okay. All I’m going to do first of all is just I’m going to draw your swing plane lining. Okay. Okay. Now, you mentioned earlier I said, “What do you think that you’re doing wrong?” And you said, “Well, I think I’m potentially coming a little over the top.” Let’s take a look. Now, being a good player and knowing about the industry. Mhm. We look on the way back and it’s close. Mhm. Yeah. We go to the top of the golf swing. Really nice. Yeah. Now, if we just take a look on the way down now, I want you to notice where your club is under in relation to that swing plane. There you go. So, then I flip it. Yep. So, quite a bit inside there. So, this is why you’re a picker. Mhm. So, you’re shallow so there’s not lots of compression, which is still okay. But from here, what we’re going to see is your path be out to the right. So, we’ll see this now. It swings from the inside. Yeah. We strike it nicely. Yeah. But we we’re going to see the club now work above the plane. Uhhuh. And we’re going to see there’s a lot of hands going on here. Look at this. Yeah. So, there’s that sort of flip on the way through. Gotcha. Heads down for a long time. Mhm. Look at that club face. See how much that club face is closed. Yeah. And then we have this nice and we have this lovely finish at the end there. Yeah. So, basically, you’re you’re a little under the plane instead of over the plane. Okay. and that under the plane here, you’re actually in a pretty good position. But we said then sort of stay back and flip. But here’s a crazy thing with this is if you think you’re over the top, you might go, I need to be more inside. Let’s go more inside because it’s going left. Then you go more into the problem. So I also was going to say I thought I had a flat swing path, but my swing path is fine. I’m coming in flatter. Correct. Yeah, the back swing is nice. We shallow too much and then flip. Now, if we take a look at where your ball position is in your stance, what would you say for a seven iron? It’s a little too far forward. Yeah, it’s a little forward now. Now, we couldn’t We’ll move If we move it back, um what would happen if we moved it back? What would the strike do? Strike would be better. It wouldn’t be on the upswing. Yeah. So, we compress it a little bit more. So we we we we could improve the strike, but now we bring the path a little bit more to the right, which is not necessarily a good thing, right? So this is my starting point, though. Okay. Now, we know for you, Kristen, you have a lot of, let’s say, release. So this club face works pretty hard on the way through. Yes. The more the ball is forward, what’s likely to happen? It’s going to be more shut. It’s going to be more closed. So for you, my my thinking of this, and we’ll start with this, is if we move the ball further back, it doesn’t need to be loads, but let’s say just ahead of center. Mhm. My thinking of this is the face is going to be a little bit more to the right. Yes. The path will be a little bit more to the right, but all I want to do is I’m going I want to get rid of that left one. Yeah. This won’t be the only thing that we do. I want to work on the swing as well. But if we move the ball back first, what I’d like to see is the attack angle be a little steeper. Okay. And I want to see what it does to your direction. Yeah. Yeah. My goal for us is go I want that left. I don’t want to see go left. Yeah. And that’s going to be the priority. But let’s start with the simple wins at setup that can hopefully improve strike and then take that out. And then we’ll work on a bit of the golf swing and just get yourself set to that ball for me. So all I’m going to do for this one. Does that feel back compared to normal? A maybe a little bit. Okay. So I need to do more of that. Yeah, that may be a little too far. So maybe there. That’s I like that there. So that’s just just slightly ahead of center. That should feel a little further back compared to normal. Be a little ahead of center or should be middle. Seven iron. I like just ahead. Okay. That’s okay. It’s going to even the change like this just throws you off. Yeah. Yeah. I might just add one thing in your setup actually. Okay. Can you just favor the your left leg? Let’s say I’d like to see with an iron press with that or no. Not necessarily forward press, but more let’s say 60% of the weight on your front leg. Does that look maybe 55? There you go. Oh, I can feel like almost Okay. Now that you’ve told me like I can feel it. Yeah. Isn’t it interesting though that we can think that we’re doing one thing, you know, you thought you were sort of over the top and closing the face. It was the opposite. The face was closed. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Okay. Nice. Look at the path now. The path is 7° to the right. Uhhuh. Which is high. Yeah. It was four, right? Yeah. So, we’ve crept that up, which is which is okay at the moment. Face on that one was really nice. It was only two and a half. That’s good. Mhm. This is a little too high. Okay. We are going to work at this now. Yeah. But it’s exactly what you expected. Yeah. Because the ball now you’re hitting the the club hitting the ball earlier in the arc, but we’re a little on the high side now. But let’s That’s good. That’s good. We’ll keep going. How often would you shake the golf ball intentionally on the golf course? Not very often. Okay. Okay. I’m going to get you to try and hit me a fade. Okay. And I’m going to tell you it’s going to be hard. Okay. So, what I want you to do, I want the ball to start here. Okay. And then curve back. All right. Currently, your good shots start here and curve back slightly. Mhm. The bad ones start here and miss this one. Okay. Lovely. Yeah, that was nice. Yeah. Yeah. I think that was left. Okay. Look at your club path. Whoa. Okay. It’s still to the right. Mhm. But less. But it’s half of where you were. Mhm. Your club face there was still a fraction close to the path, but a lot less. Exactly. A lot less. Okay. Lovely. Lovely. Now, here’s the thing with that one. That was a really nice shot. Yeah. Yeah. Now, I’m saying to you, hit a fade. And that was like a tiny baby draw, but look at this. Look at your Look at your path there. Still think really, but your face was really nice. It was half of it. Okay. And that’s you working really hard to try and curve it the other way. Mhm. So, that’s keeping my face. That’s what I’m thinking. I got you. Okay. I want this ball curving to the right on this one. Okay. Lovely. That one. Yeah. Okay. I like that. Okay. So, that’s now developing some awareness of the face as well. Mhm. Okay. Let’s get into Okay. the swing then. So, let me grab a club. So, now it’s about giving you something to practice to rehearse and just feel that’s different to yours. Now, your move has been this. Let’s I’ll exaggerate this just for just for so you can sort of see it clearly. We would swing down a little underneath. Mhm. Yeah. We would then flip past here like this. Yes. So, what we’re going to do is we’re going to do the opposite. I’m going to get you to feel that the club first of all on the way through is going to be working a little bit more left and with the body. And with the body. And look at the club face. Yeah. So, we’re going to feel, again, this is the the word feel, that this club face is going to be doing more of this and the path is going to be swinging a little bit more left. So, let’s jump in. Okay, let’s explore some of these things. So, this is you. So, you know, you’ll hear heads down for a long time, club face is closed. Okay. So, all I want you to do with me now is as we swing through, I want you to just allow your whole body to work through with me. Where does that club feel like it’s going? Left. Left. Look at the face. Don’t square. Square. Perfect. Now, here’s the finish position difference. Okay. Okay. What do you notice about that finish position? I feel left. You feel left. Okay. Good. You feel left? Yeah. In terms of where you’re facing. Yes. Okay. Good. Is that what it’s supposed to be? Exactly. Exactly. Good. Now, let’s do do me a mini back swing and let’s do the same feeling for us. So, just do a little sort of short and then through. Good. Love that. By the way, that should feel different. Yeah. Yeah. I want you to do that golf swing every time. That is perfect. Okay. Okay. Good. Almost. It was like That’s good. You feel Now you’re aware though. Awareness is key though. So, what what I loved about that there, Kristen, is you you went you went, “Oh, okay. Let’s But perfect. Perfect.” Because now you feel that. Okay. Look at the club path that you’re doing this one. Okay. Great. Yeah. Yeah. These numbers are super low. Club path zero face 1.1 left. Yeah. Okay. Yes. Beautiful finish on that one. That was really nice. Better. 2.8. Mhm. Finished on target. That did. Okay. Yes. Good. That was closer. That was nice. Felt good. A lot closer, but still not. So look at the number on this one. Look at this. Okay. Oh, so club path on this was 0.9. Amazing. Um face to path was 2.9. Okay. So path is now really nice here. We’re getting this like two or less. Yes. This is the one. That’s why it’s obviously going left now. We’re going to get it in a moment. So we always talk about this. We’re going to get like a holy moment. Where you hit one and you’re like that’s it. Like path is good, face is good. And then you’ll have that feeling and keep Yes. keep reinforcing it. So, you’re going to do that back swing. Now, on the way down, you’re going to rotate hard. Now, this is the feeling that you’re going to have. That face is obviously miles open, and we’re swinging a lot more left and keeping it open fast. And just Yeah, that face is just going to return a little more open than we used to. There we go. Okay. So, see how we we nailed the practice swing on that one. And you’re like, I’ve got the face on that one. I can see I can see you doing it. Look at this. Club path three face was perfect. Oh. 0.2. That’s the closest it’s been. 0.2. And it was still left. And it was still left. Yeah. And you felt that was like open. Yeah. Yeah. But I could see that. I could see it registering. I saw your practice swing. I’m like do exactly the same. Yes. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. That was straight. Okay. Let’s look at the numbers. Club path 2.7. Mhm. Good face. 2.4. Good. It’s less than. As long as it’s less than the club path at the moment, we’re in good. We’re in good shape. Okay. Beautiful. Very nice. Again, look at the top left number. Yeah. Very close to square. And the path’s halved. Yeah. Three in a row. Okay. Boom. Okay. Four in a row. Oh, solid. Five in a row. Sorry. Probably doesn’t get any better than that one. That was pretty good. Okay, so let’s take a look at the golf swing. Now, this is the improved one. This is you feeling left. Club path or swing plane on the way back. Really nice. Yeah, it’s actually slightly better than it was earlier. It’s almost more upfright. Exactly. Yeah. But what watch what happens now on the way down. You still shallow it. Yeah. But look at this club now. We’re just going to come down. We’re going to come down. Wow. Now look, you can’t even see the shaft. No. Because now it’s completely different. It is right on plane at this point. Look at this. Wow. And down. Down on plane. This was slightly at the toe, but let’s look at the club on the way through. Now it swings through on the plane. Still can’t see the shot. The club. Yeah. And then we swing through here. Look at the club face. Yeah. Square. A lot squarer. Still a lot squarer and up versus flattened out that. And then through here. And look at your finish now. You’re finishing like really cold on the way through. Wow. What a difference. Yeah. What a difference. Good stuff, guys. Hope you enjoyed that. The way her ball flight changed the instant she started covering it with that forward shaft lean was so satisfying to watch.
This is why golf is so hard. You were given a real test here. A high index who slices is pretty much easy to fix. Kirsten has real skill, but 20 yards left is going to see more trouble than 30 high and right. I thought her face looked very shut going back then open coming down. Don't get that.
I wonder if they have ever had a student that, no matter what they did or how hard they practiced, properly, they just couldn't help them. I have had 4 different instructors and none have been able to help me, so I wonder if some students just can't be helped in one way or another.

This is me! And I haven't been able to fix it. 7 deg right to left and a closed club face. I've tried a wide open slice and I'm 2 deg closed. So many videoes on over the top and finally one about being too far from the inside.
Time to practice this.
What I would do for a life changing lesson😭
This lady certainly got a result with your Instruction. Outstanding.
