One of the strongest fields in recent memory has gathered in Brisbane as the Australian PGA Championship gets underway at Royal Queensland this Thursday.

Australian superstars Cameron Smith, Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee are all confirmed starters for a shot at winning another Australian PGA title, and they will be joined in the field by the likes of defending champion Elvis Smylie, two-time PGA Tour winner Ryan Fox of New Zealand and LIV Golf stars Joaquin Niemann and Abraham Ancer.

LIV Golf’s Marc Leishman and two-time PGA Tour winner Cam Davis will also bolster the Australian charge, but the internationals are to set to put a mighty with the likes of England’s Marco Penge and Denmark’s Rasmus Neergard-Petersen making the trip down under after earning PGA Tour cards after stellar seasons on the DP World Tour.

The Australian PGA is co-sanctioned between the formerly named European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia, with the event serving as the opener to the new season for the former.

Royal Queensland will also host the golf competition for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, so there is no doubt that some players will have a long term vision in mind as they navigate that course that will play host for the fifth year in a row.

Rory McIlroy will not be in Brisbane this week, however, with the Masters champion only locked in for next week’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne.

WEATHER FORECAST

Last year’s Australian PGA was shortened to 54 holes because of wild Brisbane weather, and the Queensland capital was once again battered with heavy rains at the start of the week with the wild storm leaving almost 100,000 people without power.

There was damage inflicted to temporary facilities at Royal Queensland, but the course remained open for practice rounds despite the 17th hole being shut because of repair works.

Unfortunately, there is more rain to come, but it is unlikely to be enough to cause a repeat of 12 months ago – although, Wednesday’s pro-am day is set to be spoiled by downpours and the tournament might start in soggy conditions.

Brisbane forecast via the Bureau of Meterology

Thursday – min 24, max 36, 0-7 mm of rain

Friday – min 25, max 34, no rain

Saturday – min 23, max 34, 0-10 mm of rain

Sunday – min 23, max 32, 0-2 mm of rain
