Many in New Orleans remember John Meechum because he was the first owner of the Saints paying $8.5 million in expansion fees to get the franchise off the ground in 1967. However, John Meechum should not be the person getting credit for bringing professional football to the state of Louisiana. That credit should go to a local sports entrepreneur by the name of Dave Dixon, who had been lobbying the NFL for 5 years prior to the Saints arriving in New Orleans to have a professional football team in the city to the point he even convinced the NFL to host exhibition games in the city. And when those games had record turnouts, one week after the AFL NFL merger in 1967, NFL Commissioner Pete Rosselle then announced that the city of New Orleans would be getting an expansion franchise. However, Dave Dixon is the one who talked to the commissioner and he asked him not to make the announcement on the new team in New Orleans until November 1st because November 1st, that was All Saints Day. And he had a vision of nicknaming this team the New Orleans Saints. And the team has only changed hands one time in its franchise’s history. That was in 1985 to Tom Benson who paid7.2 2 million for the franchise.
