President Donald Trump announced Saturday that golf icon Jack Nicklaus will take the lead on restoring two golf courses at Joint Base Andrews, the military installation just outside Washington, D.C.
According to the White House, Trump and Nicklaus, whose company Nicklaus Design ranks among the world’s largest in golf course design and construction, toured the base from the air before discussing the upcoming projects.
Ahead of the visit, Trump told reporters that Nicklaus would play a central role in revamping the base’s golf courses and recreational facilities, which the president described as “in very bad shape.”
“We can — for very little money — fix it up,” he said.
Trump explained that Nicklaus, known as “The Golden Bear” during his outstanding career, will be acting as both architect and designer for the project.
“We’re gonna try and reinstitute the golf courses. I’m meeting with the greatest, Jack Nicklaus,” Trump said outside the White House before boarding Marine One.
Andrews, located in Maryland, roughly 20 miles from the White House and home to Air Force One, has long carried the nickname the “president’s golf course.” The Andrews website states that the facility features two 18-hole championship golf courses — the East and South courses — each designed as a par-72 layout.
In April 2019, President Trump shared a picture on his social media standing next to Nicklaus, who won 117 professional tournaments during his career. They were joined by another golf legend. “Great morning at Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods,” he wrote.
This latest plan at Andrews adds to Trump’s extensive list of construction initiatives. The potential redesign comes on the heels of a major White House project. Crews recently demolished the East Wing to make way for a $300 million ballroom commissioned by Trump.
