MIRAMICHI – The city has donated a combined $17,491 raised from an annual golf tournament in memory of former mayor Gerry Cormier to eight charitable causes.
During Tuesday’s city council meeting, Mayor Adam Lordon presented cheques to the Gerry Cormier Memorial Scholarship Fund, Miramichi Community Food Bank, Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue, Miramichi SPCA, families adopted by city employees Brenda Landry and Craig Somers, and Miramichi Safe Harbour Services — formerly known as the Miramichi Emergency Centre for Women.
Miramichi Housing Solutions also received $2,000 in proceeds from the golf tournament held over the summer at the Miramichi Golf and Country Club, but no one from the organization attended the meeting.
The scholarship fund received $4,491, while the Christmas families each received $500, and the search team, Safe Harbour Services, the housing group, and the SPCA each received $2,000. The food bank got $4,000.
“I want to commend you,” Cormier’s wife, Jackie Cormier, said after accepting the scholarship fund donation. “Not only will this help a lot of students receive a scholarship, but it’s so great to see all of the other recipients of this money. These are all worthwhile causes, and I’m sure Gerry is looking down on us and smiling.”
