Brandon Ware and Wal Kalinowski shared five birdies as they scored 42 points to win Sunday’s 17-hole third round to move into contention for the men’s 17-hole Winter League Hallet Cup at Canterbury Golf Club.
Having finished second in the last round, they were out in one-under-par, following one bogey, Kalinowski’s birdie at the seventh and Ware’s at the ninth for 19 points, with the fifth still currently closed for competition to repair the vandalised green.
Canterbury Golf Club’s Wal Kalinowski – proved a winning combination with Brandon Ware
They came back in three-under-par for another 23 after Ware birdied the 10th for four points and the 19th, while Kalinowski made four points from a birdie at the 12th, to win by two from Levi Johnson and Simon Leggatt.
Johnson birdied the second, ninth, 13th, 15th and 18th with four pars and Leggatt scored with eight pars and an opening bogey in a four-under-par gross total of 66 for 40 points and second position in a field of 48 pairs.
Tim Jakob and Simon Clay made 24 points on their opening back nine in a total of 39, for third on countback from five-birdie Kyle Bennett and Dean James and fifth-placed Shaun Pilbeam – who eagled the ninth hole – and Richard Blackburn.
Ware said: “We birdied the par-5 seventh and ninth and Wal lipped out for eagle on the seventh.”
Kalinowski added: “I had a very good drive, played my 4 iron just short of the green and second bounce, my chip went in the hole and came out again.”
Ware said: “On nine, I hit my drive left but managed a 3 wood from a decent lie in the rough to just short of the green and got up and down.
“Then on 10, I drove over the ditch right into the middle of the fairway and made birdie. That was only about the second time I’ve birdied 10. I was maybe 150 out, hit an 8 iron and put it to three feet.”
Kalinowski then birdied the 12th hole and Ware made an up-and-down par on the 13th and added: “Wal made a great clutch par on 17.
“He hit a beautiful fade off the tee and onto the green with a 4 iron and put a breaking putt to two feet and then I birdied 18.
“I pushed my second shot 4 iron into the far-right bunker and played a superb bunker shot to two feet.”
Alan Holcroft was the only player in a field of 45 to beat par with 37 points from 71, net 64, to win Wednesday’s 17-hole men’s Midweek Stableford competition.
He reached the turn in a personal-best two-under-par for 21 points, after following an opening bogey with birdies at the second, fourth and seventh and four pars and birdied the 14th, and 16th and double bogeyed the 10th, 11th and 18th for 16 back to win by three.
Melvyn Curd, 80, net 64, scored 14 out and 20 back from a five-over-par 40, for second position on countback from Aston Wood and fourth-placed Bruce Maguire.
Holcroft said: “My best front nine before was maybe one-under so I’m very happy with that one.”
Alison Mason, left, and Jacqui Mount took the honours in Saturday’s American Greensomes second round of the Women’s Winter League
Alison Mason putted in from off the green on the second and chipped in from the bank on the sixth for four-point birdies as she and Jacqui Mount scored 38 points to win Saturday’s 17-hole American Greensomes second round of the Women’s Winter League by three.
The league will eventually have an individual winner and each player plays each round alongside a different partner.
Saturday’s format saw both players drive on each hole and then hit each other’s tee shots, before deciding which ball to hit alternately, to complete the hole.
Mount and Mason also had four bogeys and a no-return on the fifth before they ended the front nine with two pars for 21.
They covered the back nine in nine-over from two pars, five bogeys and two doubles for 17.
Tina Bird and Louise Fairburn failed to score on the first and fifth, but two pars and five bogeys brought them 16 points on their outward nine.
They scored two pars, six bogeys and double at the 10th for 19 on their inward nine and a total of 35 for second on countback from Clare Mills and Katrina Jordan in a field of 10 pairs.
Mills and Jordan scored one par, 11 bogeys, a double and four blobs for 20 out and 15 back.
Mount said: “Both birdies were down to Alison, she really was the star of the show.
“She putted in from off the green on the end and did it again on the sixth, when she hit a great chip, which hit the flagstick and dropped in. Those two four-pointers made all the difference.”
Caroline Collins carried her flag to two thirds of the way up the 18th fairway to win the Last Woman Standing fun competition, and for the third time this year amid a string of near-misses.
Ali Kingston was second after finishing a foot from the hole on the 17th green and third-placed Emma Richardson ended her round after putting out on the 16th hole.
The field of 22 were given shots of par for the course plus two-thirds of their course handicap and played until all their shots had been used before planting their flag.
Mike Parrott scored a four-point birdie on the 16th for a total of 34 to win Monday’s 17-hole Seniors Stableford event by one.
He three-putted the first and 13th for double bogeys but otherwise also scored four pars and 10 bogeys for 20 points out and 19 back and his second win of the year.
Bernard Disneur tripled the first for an outward 14 points and scored two pars, five bogeys and one double for 19 on his back nine, to take second on countback from Chris Cheeseman, Simon Fowler and fifth-placed Tim Jakob in a field of 65. David Dillon won Division 2 with 32.
Cheeseman had 32 points after 16 but double bogeyed the last, Fowler failed to score on the sixth and 15th, and Jakob doubled the sixth, 12th and 17th holes.
