GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The University of Florida golf team has their sights set on a potential location for a new golf course.
But some residents are concerned about the new green’s proximity to their homes.
Alachua County’s Growth Management Director Jeffrey Hays says the entrance would be off 122nd Street, next to the Haile Plantation neighborhood.
The course would be built on 580-acres of what the county calls a “strategic ecosystem,” but Hays says the area has been reviewed and approved for development.
Hays said, “This property actually went through a really substantive process back in 2022 and 2023 in what we call a special area study.”
He says the university would have to follow the county’s guidelines for established conservation areas, and permits would have to be approved regarding the population of animals and plants in the area.
The proposal will need to go through a five-step process before the decision can be made. Hays says there will be meetings to hear public comment, and people can also share their opinions with the county commission in the coming year.
