To prove it could compete at the highest level in Florida.

The Trojans placed fifth in the team standings and senior Bryce Matthews tied for fourth in the individual field over the two-day event at Mission Resort + Club at Howey-in-the-Hills near Orlando Nov. 18-19.

“Our team put together a phenomenal performance against the best competition in the state,” Lincoln coach Mike Zatoris said. “While we aimed for the top, earning a fifth-place finish proves that we can compete at the highest level.

“I couldn’t be prouder of how they battled all season.”

Lincoln’s state showing paced by senior Bryce Matthews

The Trojans’ performance was paced by Matthews, who finished 1-over par with rounds of 70-75 at the El Campeon course known for its significant elevation changes.

Chase Fleischer (76-79), Will Young (79-73), Brandon Hawks (83-83) and Ethan LaFuria (88-87) rounded out the team’s scores.

Lincoln advanced to the State Championships for the second consecutive year with a second-place finish in the regional behind winner Fleming Island.

The Trojans placed sixth in the team standings in 2024 – their first state appearance since 2002.

Matthews, who placed 16th last season, said he focused on patience and trusting his game during the 36-hole competition.

“The big thing was committing to every shot and not getting rattled when things didn’t go perfectly,” Matthews said.

“Once I found a rhythm, I felt like I could just play my game.”

Matthews also pointed to the team’s determination over the season and how players rallied behind each other.

“What I am most proud of is how we competed together.” Matthews said.

“The way we closed this out says a lot about the group. This season has been incredible. Just the growth, the chemistry, and the belief we built each match with each other. We’ve been through highs and lows, but it brought us closer.

“To finish the way we did make it all feel really special.”
