Tasmania’s Mitch Van Noord ended an 11-year wait for a homegrown champion, while Queensland’s Sara Knevitt claimed the biggest win of her career at the 2025 Tasmanian Amateur Championships at Ulverstone Golf Club.

Van Noord, from Launceston GC, edged Queenslander Alfie Ward by one hole in a tense final to become the first Tasmanian champion since 2014. He had only just scraped into match play as the 15th seed, but then upset top qualifier Callum Yates 2&1, swept past Jack Harlen-Robertson 6&5, and held off Jonty Lunson 2&1 to reach the title match. “It wasn’t pretty golf,” he said. “But I did what I had to. Winning the Tassie Amateur — and ending an 11-year wait for a local champion — feels pretty special.”

In the women’s event, Knevitt made her long trip from the Gold Coast count. After qualifying in a tie for second, she edged Lorissa Dobson by one in the quarterfinals, beat Jessie Richmond 3&2 in the semis, and closed out Victoria’s Grace Yang 4&2 in the final. “My drives were straight and my pressure putts were really good,” she said. “I’ve never won a major event, so this feels amazing.”
