Penrith based business delivers a major boost for grassroots sport in Cumbria, Over the last year Penrith Golf Hub has successfully delivered introductory golf sessions to over 1,600 primary school children across the area, from as far West as Keswick, throughout Penrith and across to Appleby. This initiative, teeing off at 25 local schools, is part of a concerted effort to grow the game of golf and make it more accessible to young people.
Following the delivery of the schools sessions, Penrith Golf Hub then delivered two Open Days at the Hub offering children the chance to experience golf in a golf environment.
The introductory golf initiative has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship and support from Atkinson Building Contactors, Atkinson Homes, and Hutton John Estate, whose community development sponsorship helped remove financial and logistical barriers for schools to take up Penrith Golf Hub’s introductory golf sessions.
The sessions have been delivered by Penrith Golf Hub’s professional PGA team, led by Ellie Broome, along with Jamie Sowerby and Rory Bushnell. The trio brought enthusiasm, expertise, and a passion for the sport to every school they visited, offering children their first hands-on experience with golf in a fun and engaging environment.
“This project is all about opportunity,” said Ellie Broome, PGA Professional at Penrith Golf Hub. “We want every child — regardless of background — to feel that golf is a sport they can access, enjoy, and potentially excel in.”
The initiative has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers, parents, and pupils alike. Many schools have already expressed interest in continuing their involvement with golf through after-school clubs or taster sessions at the hub.
Penrith Golf Hub’s grassroots outreach programme is helping to make golf more inclusive and appealing to the next generation of players. With continued community and sponsor support, the Hub plans to expand the programme even further in the coming years.
