[Music] Welcome back to Fling Golf. As part of ESPN 8, Theo, we’re kicking it off with the Fling Golf Skills Challenge. Let’s take a look at the rules for our first challenge of the day. A timed relay between teams. So, team blue has four minutes to hit as many targets as possible. One player working at a time to hit their designated target before the next teammate can begin. One point is awarded per target hit. And then at the end of those four minutes, team orange will have the same four minutes to score more points than team blue. All right, here we go, guys. Let’s get it started. We ready? All right, Rosie. So, Rosie Flores going for this. Looking good. If it stays in, good. It’s got to sit. Oh. just rolls out. So, she has to go again here. Remember, the next teammate cannot go until that ball reaches the inside of the short ring. That should be good. And the technique is just so interesting for anybody that’s never seen fling golf before. They’re used to seeing a golf club. You only play with one stick. That’s right. So, you got to take every shot with one stick. So, that’s where the nuance of the game comes in. It’s not like you can if you need 10 more yards, you can drop it down a an iron. Um, you got to you got to figure out a way either by your type of shot or um how you actually control it and how much how much swing you put into it to uh to get the right distance. Austin Esol, did he get inside the ring? That’s enough. He did not. He did not. He’ll have to go again. Now, the interesting thing here is this is the quote unquote long shot of the competition, but it’s only 120 yards away. Typically the best players on the World League Tour are flinging it 200 to 250 yards. Yeah. 200 to to you know 220 225 depending on how much roll you’re going to get and then beyond that to 250. Um so yeah, they’re they have to pull something back here. Um especially even on that long one, it’s really not that long. And as you referenced at the top of the show, John, this is traditionally played on a real golf course. That’s right. Exactly. We can we’ve been played on over 2,000 courses um all over the world and and really it’s it’s completely seamless with traditional golf because you can play in the same force and with other golfers no problem whatsoever. That’s it. Sit. Oh, just missed. Austin Eversol is not the longest flinger on the tour, but he does want to be the best at 120 yards and in. That’s the focus of his game because that’s really where you’re going to score. Just like in traditional golf where it’s those it’s those 120 yards in where you’ve got to get dialed in to know exactly at every yardage what you’re doing with that fling stick, what technique you’re using, how hard you’re throwing it. She is locked in. Yeah, she really is. She’s on a roll now. Kyle Stevenson is on the field. He is a fling golf player in his own right. Kyle, what are you seeing down there, man? Well, I got the best view in the house down here. Uh, it’s interesting to see how they’re rolling on the turf. I think they’re adjusting well and uh, yeah, putting point points on the board. You think it’s rolling faster on the turf than on a traditional grass surface? Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, they definitely have to factor that into their shots. Here’s Austin Eversol again. And that is good. There we go. Fourth time through. There is less than a minute to go here. Less than a minute. Keep keep going for the blue team. Rosie, she wasn’t sure if she was done or not. That’s a good fling, though. Watch the ball that was in the way. Heartbreaker there. That should be good. Yeah, almost hit the other ball again. That’s perfect. So, here comes Jake Anderson. He’s got 30 seconds. He has become a master at this mid-range shot here. And that is good. So now Austin Eversol has 24 seconds to hit the long range target. 20 seconds. Showtime, baby. No, he’s good. All done. All right, Rosie, can you get one more? Oh, that’s from Rosie to Flores. And that can the four minutes for the blue team. All right, let’s see if team orange can beat 13. Here we go. And this is Britt Hammond starting it off for team orange. Yeah, she’s got a really good side car. So, I think she’s going to do clean sweep, I should say. I think she’ll get dialed in on this. All right. Now, you referenced some terminology here. break it down for us for the fans at home who have never seen this before. You’re playing with one stick the whole way for all 18 holes if it’s being played on a golf course, but there’s different ways to use the stick, which we’re seeing in this skills competition. Yeah. So, we’ve got names for all of our types of shots, especially when you get beyond just the, you know, throw it overhand and throw it hard as you can. So, what you’ll see on the short ones are, you know, two different styles. side car where you’re really sort of chipping it off to the side and then some do it between the legs and we call that the uh the clean sweep. And if you just saw Gary, he did a uh really a long distance uh clean sweep to that middle target which gets a lot of loft on it. Now Sam Scandal who’s whipping it right now to the long target. He actually won the longest drive competition so to speak earlier on was it last year at the World Fling? Well, yeah, he’s won it actually this year and the year before. He won the LFC belt. And as you see, he’s not a uh he’s not the biggest guy, and he dethroned uh big country Brooks Medford, who uh um they’ve been in a battle for that the last three years, but uh he can just get the the head speed on his on his fling shots so fast that he gets the most distance on tour right now. But the interesting thing is here, he’s got to go at 120 yards. You got to take some off of No, you do. You got to take a lot off of it. Like there’s no full swings out here today. Got it. Gary Callas puts it in. Now back to Sam Scandal whose dream is to be a fulltime fling golfer traveling the world. He’s played in England uh with Team USA, winner of the Britain’s Cup this year. One more time. Yeah, we’ve got a lot of uh a lot of the competitors out there today were on Team USA for uh we did a RDER Cup style event. First international competition we had earlier this summer and uh Team USA was uh was victorious. Stay in there. Oh, and he just rolled out the back of that ring. Oh, there are 90 seconds left here. Team Orange has got to pick it up. They really do. Yeah, they’re having trouble with that long one. It’s been uh very unforgiving. That should be the long one. That should be good. Need a few quick ones here. Yep. That’s going to be good. Perfect. There was a hole that would be in exactly Gary’s looking pretty good. Gary Kowas has just been money with the mid-range shot. He’s he’s dialed in and he’s got the trajectory right because if you go too high with that shot, it’s going to take a too much time on the relay and um it’s sometimes it’s not going to get there. Oh, did that get there? No, it just stopped short. There’s 40 seconds left here for team orange. They’re down five. That’s right on it, baby. Oh, and that hit. Yeah, fortunately only get one point for that. Brit’s going to be good for another now. Gary Callas with 25 seconds. 13-10. Went with a high arcing shot and again puts it right into the ring. Great comeback here for Orange. Making it close. What do you think, Kyle? Going to do trajectory. I think it’s going to be tough if this one hits the flag and stops. Oh, he needed to hit the flag. Y Oh, man. That one is not going to happen. Team blue sneaks out with a twopoint win in the skills challenge of a timed relay. We will keep these scores and continue to accumulate over the course of the competition. Next, we will have another event to tell you about when we return in Rock Hill, South Carolina, featuring Fling Golf as part of ESPN8 Theo Show, presented by Sonic. [Music]
