Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood has spoken glowingly about Dubai as he targets glory at this weekend’s DP World Tour Championship. And victory in the end-of-season tournament would be that much more special after moving his life to the United Arab Emirates.

Fleetwood, 34, and wife Clare, who is 23 years his senior, moved to the United Arab Emirates hotspot in early 2022. And the world No. 4 has enjoyed a string of important wins since then, including a landmark first PGA Tour win some 15 years after first turning professional.

Having played a key role in securing the crown for Team Europe in this year’s Ryder Cup, he has his eyes fixed on individual glory at Jumeirah Golf Estates this weekend. And Fleetwood is well in the hunt for first place at the DP World Tour Championship, where he has twice finished as a runner-up, entering the championship rounds.

“This is the last event I’ll play this year, and it’s been an amazing one,” Fleetwood said ahead of this weekend’s proceedings. “It would be incredible to finish it off with a win. My whole family is here, there are so many familiar faces, and the course is just around the corner from home.

“I’ve had a couple of good chances in this tournament over the years, but I’d like to do better this time — give myself more opportunities. I can picture that winning moment on the 18th green; I know it so well. We’ll give it everything.

“The course has become such an iconic venue for us on Tour. And it’s always nice to be sleeping in my own bed again.”

Tommy and Clare, who is also his long-time manager, moved to Dubai three years ago. The couple share three sons, two of whom are Clare’s from a previous marriage, with each showing a budding interest in the sport that has made Fleetwood a household name.

His star has grown considerably in recent years and came to fruition in the form of a maiden PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship back in August. Fleetwood set a new record for most money accrued in the competition without a title, earning around £26million before he got his hands on a piece of winner’s silverware.

He has since added to that legacy by earning more points than any other player at the Ryder Cup in September, then clinched the DP World India Championship the following month. He has even opened his own academy at Jumeirah Golf Estates and spoke in 2024 about the growing golf connections sprouting in his new home country.

“You have iconic golf courses,” said Fleetwood last year. “People watch tournaments played on these courses year-in, year-out and I think people are very, very passionate about the game.

“I don’t know what the numbers are, but there’s definitely a strong ratio for people playing the game. I think more golf courses will be built. I think more people will take up the game and I think it will keep growing here. So it definitely has a strong place in the world of golf.”

Fleetwood made a strong start to his campaign at the Earth Course this weekend, with Rory McIlroy also showing promise. The pair are competing for their share of a £7.6m prize fund in Dubai, of which around £2.3m will go to the victor.
