so many people get this wrong which Fairway Woods should you be playing now it is a bit of a confusing Topic in all fairness base around the marketing what people just generally believe about how their bags should be set up but today we’re going to help you answer that question because we’re taking you through a in-depth dive we’re going to be hitting Three Wood fivewood seven wood and 9wood at three different swing speed so 80 mph 90 mph and 100 mph having a deep d into the data taking you through all of the bull speed launch spin the peak height the angle descent and the carry of all of those clubs at each of those different swing speeds and I think a lot of you might be surprised by some of the results that we are about to see especially at those slower swing speeds so let us know what you think about that as always if you enjoy our content please do hit that subscribe button we’re trying our best to bring you good educational informative entertaining content so if you do enjoy our stuff please smash that subscribe button you’ve got any questions post in the comments below we’d be more than happy to get back to each and every one of you right let’s jump into the video so in today’s test we’re going to try and keep all the variables as neutral as possible we’re going to try and deliver a neutral face uh with a neutral path and an angle of attack of around zero uh we’re going to start off in the GT2 15° we’re going to use the T SII 1K blue shaft in a regular flex and we’re going to start off with 80 M hour let’s get some data that felt pretty good yeah that L really good absolutely middled yeah it’s a nice ball not getting more middle than that yeah you struck that well me zero z z well or perfect you’re not getting another donut mate all these Donuts I’ve been sheding out lately come on um I’m going to be skinned um Okay cool so yeah I mean pretty good on the um so we’re trying to aim for 80 miles an hour in this test um the moment you’re 78.9 so pretty good um ball speed 114 efficiency 144 so really good efficiency getting the most out of that that’s basically driver efficiency really it exactly that I mean you’ve you you’ve basically Bulls ey the strike z0 so fantastic job um yeah in terms of the other deliveries so very neutral path very neutral face exactly what we’re aiming for in this test um one upward angle of attack we said anywhere between sort of one up and one down trying to keep it around zero yeah I mean it’s going to be tricky swinging at a speed that obviously isn’t your own but you’re doing a good job there um and then looking now at the launch and spin so launch in at 13 and a half spinning at 25 I mean at this speed that’s that’s pretty low it’s very low yeah I think even at more speed that spin is still very low isn’t it that’s that’s basically driver spin it is yeah it is and obviously as a result ball flight’s going to be very low very shallow um so we can see here descent angle 31.9 Peak height 55 so you know when you’re trying to understand you know where where the Fairway Woods are fitting into your bag and your setup like you know iness you’re just really trying to get like a a really hot running shot off the tea like it’s it’s not particularly versatile like this Loft at this speed is going to be very onedimensional yeah you know and arguably if you hit a pre pretty decent driver like you know probably just hit your driver like why would you ever really be hitting three-w yeah well you say that I mean we get this so often where people go I hit my my driver same as my 3-wood or three-wood same as my driver so well if you look at all the variables there 1 for four efficiency driver 30 and a half launch two five spin driver driver and actually a lot of people at speed the driver and 3 swing speeds would be very similar if not the same so go you got driver numbers and Driver speed it’s a driver almost so a lot of people could almost use a three- win as a driver at that speed in all honesty yeah so a result of those numbers you can see the carry is around 174 um with a total of 197 obviously that’s going to be very dependent on ground conditions so for the purpose of this 174 carry like let’s see if moving to more Loft it’s go up to a fivewood same same speed same delivery see what happens [Music] sounded good yeah not out again was really good yeah zero path zero face 81 swing speed I think it was fractionally faster but again I mean one hour off our Target yeah is I’ll take that yeah so great strike there mate really good kept the uh Club speeding around that 80 mph Mark which is exactly what we want and surprising thing there the efficiency 144 kept up really really well it’s like a driver five is it yes driver efficiency really really good um and yeah everything else in and around that neutral exactly where we want face path angle of attack great I mean I think the thing that stands out is obviously the launch has come up and the spin has come up which is great I mean these numbers we said didn’t we would be close to three would yeah that is almost perfect three isn’t it exactly that yeah sort of 14 launch three spin you can see here on the ball flight definitely a very different ball flight yeah um ball speed couple of Mile hour quicker with a fivewood and to be honest that’s coming mainly from the club head speed difference I mean efficiency is the same at 144 um but you just Swang it a couple of mile an hour quicker and to be honest human variance like I mean a lot of people call you a robot but you’re not a robot quite not quite I mean there’s plenty of variation in in people’s speeds what we see in the bay all the time one to two miles an hour is is pretty common so yeah you’ve got that pretty close thing it wouldn’t even surprise me to see someone swing a fivewood a little bit quicker than a 3w anyway to be honest they’d be more comfortable with the sh length and the Loft so fair enough I was trying my best but you know you were trying mate you were trying you’re doing well um so yeah you can immediately see the difference in launch around half a degree and then obviously the spin as well as well sort of that five five 500 550 revs um and that all equates to a little bit more carry although if we were to say equalize for that speed it’s probably around the same I would say the reality you’re the carry in from the fivewood but if you look at the difference in the ball flight the peak Heights and The Descent angles so with the three-wood we had a peak height of 55 ft and with the fivewood we’ got a peak height of 65 ft yeah that’s considerable if you pair that with the land angle so the land angle of the three-wood was 31.9 and the land angle with the fivewood was 35.9 yeah so around almost four yeah four degrees more and 10 ft higher like that’s going to look very different on the golf course yeah I mean it’s still low isn’t it oh it’s still low still low still don’t think no necessarily think that’s going to Green but I think the interesting thing now is if we move into seven wood how much different that will be like you rightly say I don’t think I think at the same bull speed that’s going to be a very similar carry obviously we are just going to get a little bit more heye yes from award’ be a nicer flight on course it would look like okay you got that up in the air a bit more it stayed in the air a bit more it would look better like I say it’s easier to hit cuz it’s shorter bit easier to hit got bit more LOF going to get a bit more spin which gives us a bit more protection Y and it goes the same distance anyway correct it’s like no downside is there it’s like win win win win win win exactly yeah so um yeah it’d be really interesting moving into the seven to see if we can still maintain sort of that sort of carry number but maybe even get an even more functional flight and like I said really gain some versatility there [Music] tell you what it was pretty good to be fair sounded lovely W it’s gone the same is it has literally gone the same that’s a really good example so you’ve kept that speeding around that 80 Mark which is great yeah now launching at 152 so definitely getting that launch up yeah spin again is I think at this speed it’s always going to be hard to get that spin really high but I mean 2 3300 sounds mad but I think that was like it shows a millimeter high on that face I think that might have been like 3 millim High I know people watching it go what are you want about that’s ridiculous but it does make a big it makes a big difference it does make quite big difference spin so I think maybe a couple me lower that would have been 34 maybe 35 touching so yeah yeah so yeah if we add in the um the seven wood now to the fivewood and the three-wood you can see it’s a bit of a pattern arising a little bit more launch uh from the seven wood so again about a degree actually 1.2 degrees in that case of that shot um a little bit more spin importantly not a huge amount more carry it’s nothing is it you just wouldn’t even notice that on course I mean think so all of those 174 176 179 like we just said if You’ have hit 20 shots with each of those yes they’re going to end up the average is going to end up being very very close arguably like said with a three wood most Dames probably would struggle to strike that a lot more so that may even dip under the five and seven I think it would if we jump over and we look at the peak Heights on that last shot so again yeah so Peak height now up at around 70 feet um land angle in around 38 yeah you know compared to where we were with the three-wood and the fivewood it is going to give you a lot more versatility yeah I’m not saying you’re going to hit this into a green and stop it on a dime but if you’re playing long par threes at your course um if you’re playing um long par fours and you’re hitting second shots like you got so much more chance with the seven wood over the three-w and you’re going to get the same carry so you know why would you not I mean like like we said this sort of player type is going to have to be hit in this club probably more than they want if you’re hitting your free word I don’t know 180 190 200 you’re probably only driving it 220 230 so know this club probably is quite important if it’s a 170 carry carry so you want as much height as much spin as much land angle as you can possibly get yes yes at the same car you hit that three with in the summer that’s just it’s just going at least this will have half a chance of stopping quicker and stopping on the green or at least you land it a bit shorter it might not roll all the way through you know you’re giving yourself a better chance 100% so this speed loft is your friend seven Woods nine Woods they’re worth a try should we um yeah say we shall we sh okay let’s do it yeah so we we we had a ninew on the back burner we were going to um and hour about whether we were going to hit it but um yeah let’s let’s hit it let’s just show what it’s going to do yeah [Music] wow certainly gone ahead of a lot higher that that went aerial that’s cool though yeah very cool it’s really Co and that’s pretty much out of the gate that’s that’s a pretty good one to be honest that was good speed stri oh wow that’s a good strike yeah well done mate that’s good um so yeah it’s a good one to take a look at so again you’re keeping that uh swing speed around about that 80 miles hour mark it’s exactly what we wanted really neutral delivery um great numbers you can see how with that extra Loft um and that head head characteristic and style we’ve jumped the launch now to 18 Y and we’ve spaned that at nearly 47 with a good strike so that’s a big difference in it very different ball flight very very different ball flight so if we jump over to the compare page now and add that in start to see we’ve lost a little bit of ball speed which would be expected um but now we’ve massively gained some launch so we’re at 18 4 and a halfish spin and we’re carrying it now 163 with a peak height of 82 ft and a descent angle of 43.6 so different isn’t it it’s a lot better you talking about that coming into a green obviously it is a club a club down but I mean that that that launch and that spin from this kind of this is just this would be such a good club for that sort of player wouldn’t it yeah it would it would and if you if you think about sort of how you’re setting up the bag at this speed um I would say that that seven wood is The Logical um step down from the driver so you’ve obviously got your driver yeah then you’d probably have this seven wood acting as like moal 3-wood yeah so based on those numbers you was talking about off camera sort of 15 launch 32 spin it’s good three-wood very good three-wood numbers especially at this speed yeah yeah exactly that so you’ve effectively then got your seven wood playing as your three-wood this is this is now acting really as like a fivewood right so this is going to give you a lot of Versatility this ninew you can you could definitely hit that into a green yeah you know and from 160 165 170 you know you could probably hit that even into a flag at 175 to 180 if you’ve got a bit of room at the front of the green so you know you’re now starting to play you know those uh gol hes with a bit of aggression you can actually try and take those take those greens on you with that sort of club we speak about this all the time people just keep long l in their bag way way way way too long especially at like lower swing speed people thinking four iron five iron six iron instead of this like not not even like again if we hit a five IR or something at this speed like that it would just be like barely off the deck even a hybrid like this this gt19 would amazing for getting in the air it is it is so an important point to make is we’ve delivered these numbers in this test with a really uh neutral path neutral face neutral delivery yeah uh if you’re somebody who maybe has quite a lot of draw shape on your shots it’s fivewood three-wood probably really not a good idea um if you’re someone who Fades the ball so you kind of have a tendency to open the face a bit at impact and add some Loft maybe fivewood you could get away with it maybe that’s going to look a bit more like the seven wood numberers so again get fit that’s the main thing to do right go to somebody who knows what we’re doing who can walk you through the through the data has the similar technology to be able to capture all of that yeah and get fit I think that’s always our message isn’t it people when people at comments and stuff we’re just like go get fit go get fit it’s so hard for us to actually advise like this is just really it’s a bit of a guide just to open people’s eyes to get them thinking about oh actually you know maybe I shouldn’t have a three-w and a fivewood and a seven wood no maybe I should just go and get it checked out yeah like go get fitted and obviously they can advise from there um let’s step it up to uh 90 mil hour and do the same test [Music] get a little EP Banner don’t we I know we do like a little EP coat that’s the first one B we can’t we can’t use that because I was whispering good girl to pee and then it might sound a bit we’re using that might sound a bit weird we are absolutely using that I’m afraid mate done very very well there strike good club headed speed in and around that 90 mph really good I mean put one off but you’re done all right 0 one off redo it we’ll give you 0.1 uh ball speed 130 145 efficiency so great efficiency I think I think at slower swing speeds it’s easier to generate more efficiency yes I think that you’re probably right true but yeah you’re probably right again it’s not far driving numbers is it and again like super neutral delivery though so um yeah really good job by you mate so and again at this speed looking at the more important numbers down at the bottom here in the bottom left hand corner launch 12.8 3,000 spin so I mean even at this speed that’s quite strong it’s better it’s like getting close to acceptable but it’s still strong it is still strong so carrying that 209 with a total of 225 the carry on that’s interesting isn’t it basically 210 isn’t it at 9 M hour swing speed we literally just released the driver video how should you hit your driver if you haven’t watched it go and watch it it’s 220 at 9 M hour it is 220 yeah exactly that and again some people say well swing driver quite a bit faster again at this speed some people do some people don’t a lot of people don’t really swing driver much faster than than especially at lower speeds so yeah it wouldn’t be that far off Drive run I think yeah so looking at the ball flight we’ve now got a peak height of 77 and a descent angle of 37.6 so again it is strong but it’s it’s not terrible is it it’s not terrible it’s not terrible if you were looking for a like a second shot off the T Club yeah not too bad not too bad if you’re not particularly good driver with the golf ball you you don’t have much confidence you feel like you’re a bit more confident with the three-w then yeah I could could see a place for that yeah definitely could see a place for that yeah cool so should we do fivewood at this [Music] speed that sounded really good yeah that was pretty damn good yeah tiniest fade ever but I mean that’s you look at the strike that’s yeah I mean that’s that’s pretty damn good yeah that strike’s really good uh swing speed again in and around that 90 milph I mean it’s really really good job from you mate efficiency 1.43 carry 199 total 215 we probably did expect this to drop down a little bit in in yardage 10 yards is a club isn’t it but again it’s still still probably a lot closer than what some people might think because again I would argue that really most Dames you hit 53 wordss and 55 wordss at this speed and there was a 10 yard Gap best best they would probably average out to be extremely similar exactly the same as most AES four and five irons same thing there might be a 10 yard Gap there but actually after you hit 20 shots with each and you miss hit the four IR more average is the same so if we jump over to the compare page you can start to see now the difference in the ball flights um we lost a little bit of ball speed about couple of miles an hour on the on the fivewood which you’d expect to see so definitely launching it a little bit higher which is fantastic 13.6 spinning it now at 38 uh so about 800 revs up from 3,000 which is where you spun the three-wood and again we’re starting to see that sort of yeah like we were saying that sort of six to 10 yard Gap not unexpected if you carried on hitting these and hitting these you know we spoke about this a little bit as well at the lower speed food’s generally going to be an easier Club to hit shorter shaft little bit more Loft a little bit more forgiving potentially coming from that Loft um you know those potentially are going to start to cross over over time but you could argue there’s a little bit more in the in the in the tank from the freet wood let um let’s move over and maybe hit the seven wood um at this 90 M hour and see what [Music] happens that sounded lovely yeah it’s a really good strike how are we for Speed 91 on that which I think is that similar to the B that’s it 1 M hour I mean yeah I’ll give myself one M hour we’ll give you that one um so yeah Club speed 91 ball speeding around that 130 same five wouldn’t it pretty much yeah pretty much pretty much um really good neutral delivery launching now at 14.8 spinning at just under four yeah with a really really good strike just having a quick look at the ball flight peeking at 93 feet and descent angle of 43.3 getting better isn’t it I mean that’s 93 ft at this speed from this distance is is pretty good still 43 is it’s pretty solid isn’t it really good really good so if we jump over and have a look at the comparison page uh We’ve now got the three wood the fivewood and the 7w all at 90 miles an hour so you can see there’s a there’s a minor difference in ball speed but we’re talking a mile an hour or two um so nothing huge by any means um you know just jumping over to the club as well and just showing that so we are keeping that club head speed basically within a mile an hour so uh you’re doing a great job there um launch we’re definitely seeing a progression in launch 12.8 to 3 to 13.6 to 14.8 so slowly launching higher and definitely spinning more as well though not a huge difference between the fivewood and the Seven wood in this case no carry wise we’ve gone from 209 with a three-wood 199 with a fivewood to 2011 with the seven wood if you start to look at the differences as well in Peak height and land angle you know the three-wood was uh 77 ft with a land angle of 37.6 so much more of a kind of a lower flighted landing and chasing flight yeah the fivewood came up to uh 84t with a land angle of 41 and then the seven wood has come up to 93 feet with a land angle of 43.3 yeah so you know if I’m analyzing these um ball flights at this speed I’m thinking okay maybe three wood potentially as a second serve off the T fivewood and seven wood in this test here are basically doing the same thing yeah um for me personally if I was looking at those I’d be saying okay well if we want a bit of Versatility in the bag something we can hit into a green I’m thinking seven would definitely over fivewood in this case I think seven would here is a really good option you know long path threes you know very often now seeing 200 yard path threes on a lot of golf courses long path four second shots yeah uh if you get a really good driveway second shots into par fives like this would be a really functional versatile Club you could even hit it off the T to be honest with you nice firm conditions you’re going to get 200 yards off the te on a short path path four is lovely yeah so really good club I mean like you say it’s just you just wouldn’t have all three in the bag with you a lot no do yes exactly that you can see that yeah like I completely agree with what you said you would just go three-wood seven wood three-wood off the te seven wood into greens like the five and seven wood carry no different exactly that slow swing speed is’s no point in having three five or seven all in the bag you pick one right you go seven with ninew yeah in this 100% I think I maybe caught the seven wood a touch out the toe if I think if I didn’t that spin would have come up a couple hundred rev but I still think the carry would have been very much similar like if anything most a couple yards less so they’re way too close to have both of them in the bag and I’ve always said this about Fairy Woods It’s Just Three Degree difference same with long lons isn’t it three degrees difference yeah for most people it’s going to be way too close yeah and I think to be honest this this kind of like 200 carry shot it’s kind of a bit of a golden number I think in golf it’s like you need a shot that you’re going to carry out their 200 yards you know it’s very hard to hit that with a long iron at these sorts of speeds even hybrids sometimes could be quite hot flighted at these speeds like that seven would to me is like it’s almost a bit of a cheat stick you know if you’ve got 200 yard par 3es second shots into long par fours and you’re a good enough golfer where you want to be trying to take those on and and hit that green and hold it like to me it’s like a no-brainer like why would you not have one in the bag you yeah you 100% should have a at lower swing speeds you 100% should have seven wood probably nine wood as well should we hit the nine wood that took me a few more shots that one so yeah he’s going to say it’s starting to get a bit on in time but um I’d be intrigued to see if that ninew where that potentially would sit against those others and at this speed weather it would almost be like okay maybe we maybe we maybe ninew isn’t really a flight that we would want in the bag so it just be intriguing I think yeah no absolutely yeah let’s do it [Music] see that’s very close sounded really good maybe a Groove low but it’s pretty damn good yeah strike’s pretty good mate delivery fantastic really nice and neutral nice nice angle of attack yeah great so if we add the nine wood into the data we start to see that the ball speed has dropped slightly which we would expect to see a little bit more Dynamic loft is going to create a little bit less ball speed yeah um launch has come up to 17 8 and Back Spin at 5’5 and if we look at the uh the peak height in The Descent angle for that shot was actually 105 feet high and 47.9 Toc yeah so no struggle stopping that on a green no that’s probably steeper than a lot of people seven irons at this speed at this speed yeah at this speed it would be 100 the comparable speed for their seven iron definitely yes so for a 180 carry if you wanted this coming into greens if you played in Sunny climates warm conditions it’s not that windy that often the greens are very firm again this is a 180 carry Club be perfect in all fairness I think I struck that you click onto the club data page I do think I struck that a couple A M lower in the head yeah just a just a GRE low that been two mil higher I think that spin would have come down a fraction toward at 55 to probably like 51 52 and that probably would have carried like 183 184 it probably still is the club underneath the seven wood I think so 180 to 185 carry Club but that ball flight yeah I mean this as an option as a as a club that just goes skyh high and land super soft is unbelievable so let’s move on to [Music] 100 that sounded flushed that was good yeah yeah yeah perfect oh missed the Fairway pretty much sums up my game that does mate Miss Fairways no that’s really good so uh great attempt to you mate 100 miles an hour we’ll give you a mile an hour no problem at all good efficiency 142 143 for three was pretty good about right yeah pretty good uh neutral path neutral delivery um really great numbers so launching at 12 and a half spinning at 36 that was 5 mil low again you know I say that this a lot but that probably if that would have been 5 mil higher in the face that probably would have been like three three it would have been per perfect like even that it’s pretty damn good I mean it’s 98% in it you know really really good really really good so jumping over to the ball flight that was 103 feet Peak height with a descent angle of 42.9 so you can really start to see now how speed Club Ed speed and then turning into ball speed is getting that Peak height and that descend angle up it’s not a bad ball FL really is it like I said couple of M low so that added a couple hundred R to spin which makes it climb a little bit more but yeah around that 100 Peak height you know 41 42 de to be pretty solid freeway numbers yeah so carry wise we’re getting 231 so we’d expect at this speed to get somewhere around the sort of 230 carry Mark you know someone swinging three-wood at this speed is probably going to be swinging driver maybe low 100s 102 103 104 105 somewhere in that region so they’re going to be carrying it like 250 255 so it’s a nice gapping from a driver’s speed around that sort of low 100 so that’s good absolutely mate P agrees don’t you yeah yes right so fivewood [Music] was hit really well and it’s dead straight we’re using that one because that’s we made a lot of shots today yeah yeah about as good as I’m git that yeah that’s um that’s really good swing speed in a really good place um full speed it’s not too dissimilar is it really to the three-wood little bit less efficiency but again an hour yeah you’d expect a little bit less efficiency what 1.43 with the three wood to 1.41 yeah yeah really uh really neutral path and delivery um great job from you mate great strike launcher now a little bit higher 13.9 spinning a fraction more 39 yeah so it’s kind of what we’d expect to see carrying at 224 yeah yeah all the things we’d expect to see yeah it’s pretty good five numbers to be fair so jumping over to the ball flight so descent angle 45 Peak height 110 so again like a now we’re getting quite a steep yeah angle of descent quite a high peak height again with speed is going to bring that you sort of at this speed you’re not really worrying so much about Peak height descent no because you’re getting a lot of that from the speed and the ball speed so yeah so jumping over into the compare page you can start to see the difference now in the ball flights it’s very minute really actually they’re probably quite close probably a little bit closer than maybe some would expect um ball speed is a couple of miles an hour in it uh launch definitely launching a little bit higher definitely spinning a bit more couple hundred revs but you’re talking 231 to 224 carry there’s not a lot it’s not a lot in it I didn’t expect there to be like it’s less than a club and again In fairness you could probably say that the 3w was a couple Mill low in the head so if I have not Struck it a little bit low in the head it probably would have brought the spin down to 33 so he might have got 234 235 out of that still only maximum is going to be probably 10 yards in it again for me at this end of the bag where stuff needs to probably be stretched out a little bit more to giveit gapping down into irons again those they’re probably going to be way too close to have them both in the bag let’s say unless maybe you’ve got the three-wood as a backup tea Club so you got on a little te hit up a little bit more on it you might get a bit more out there aged then the fivewood as a you know I mean that you said 110 Peak 45 descent at like a 220 225 carry so youve got a very functional flight from a 220 window to land land it soft on the green again it’s a fantastic option isn’t it so should we jump over to seven wood [Music] sounded lovely yeah it was a good strike to be fair y how’s the speed 99.8 we’ll give you that that’s that’s pretty damn good we’ll give you that and the strike was not bad either so yeah 99.8 uh 218 carry yeah uh very neutral path very neutral face so again launching a little bit higher which we expect 15.1 spinning at 42 again come up a bit in spin which we’d expect it’s really good golf shot yeah and even I did it a fraction more down on that to be fair but again it’s kind of like giving us the numbers in comparison to FIV that we pretty much expect expect to see yes up in that launch a bit up in that spin a bit um but again Carry’s pretty close is it very close yeah very close so that’s uh 116 Peak height out of 46.8 eight descent angle so again like really steep W you high drop it stop it exactly why every tour pro is playing a seven wood in exactly well firm conditions it’s a really good point you know they’re playing long golf courses they need to hit High shots into tight pins they’re attacking the par fives you know maybe you could argue for them like three-w fivewood maybe maybe those flights are just a little bit hot on the greens they play so you know they hit long drives the second shots in are very rarely more than 225 230 240 in on a long long hole yeah so yeah so for them like that’s the perfect flight isn’t it seven yeah absolutely uh cool so if we jump over to the compare page and just take a look at how they all compare tell you what we need to compare my spine from the beginning to now so if we add the seven wood into the data we can start to see the ball speed has dropped a couple of miles an hour which is exactly what we’d expect to see we’ve seen that throughout the whole test as we’ve gone uh up in Dynamic Loft and we can also see the launch coming up 15.1 in this case uh spinning around that sort of 42 uh to 4250 mark uh carrying in around that 218 so if you compare that to the fivewood at 224 the 3-wood at 231 there are some gaps there but you could argue again that even having all three of these in the bag potentially is not optimal right so I think you’ve got to start to look at okay how do you want to set up your bag is that based on the course you play is it based on sort of the you know the flight that you want to see you know there’s definitely some options here isn’t it even at this speed to me I just look at that and go well obviously fivewood is too close to Freewood again realistically if you’re looking for a club as as a backup te option there going to be a three-wood in this this setup I’d go three-wood seven wood yes me too yeah that would make a lot of sense wouldn’t it yeah absolutely probably going to be there as a a 7w as a 250 to 220 carry in that region and then a 3w that’s a 230 to maybe 235 carry I mean even the gaps are a bit at least acceptable no it’s good I think this test has really shown that there’s quite a wide variety even at different speeds of of different options at this level we’re not going to hit the 9wood at this speed because probably going to hit it into orbit I would yeah would go very very high so and at this sort of speed you’ve got the speed maybe to be using longer irons and maybe even hybrids um as options so at this speed ninew unless you had a you know particularly funky delivery it’s probably not going to be an option yeah um so yeah so really if we kind of like back up and and do a little synopsis you know at slower swing speeds like loft is your friend like loft is helping out so much so ditch the three-wood potentially ditch the fivewood look at the higher lofted s and n Wards they’re going to probably fit your bag and your gapping a lot better at 100 milph you probably have a little bit more option because actually it’s going to come down maybe a little bit to how you deliver the club um but again definitely not saying you need all three um you know it’s going to be do you want a fivewood do you want a three-w do you want a seven it’s all going to be based on the courses you play and the flight that you want to see yeah um you know the type of holes you have maybe on your golf course you play um and again at higher speeds it’s uh it’s starting to get a lot more interesting maybe three wood is a really good club um you know as a second serve off the te very very long very powerful club and then maybe you want something you can hit really high and floaty into those occasions when you need to hit that kind of 230 240 shot uh and and actually still land it pretty softly yeah the takeaway for me was I did do this video a very very very long time ago nowhere near to this depth but the takeaway is the same it’s like they’re just way too close they’re so much closer than most people think especially it’s lower speeds yeah there was sort of like the lower speed there was basically no different it’s really between 3 five and seven yes then you start to see as we get add speed you you start to see a bit more separation but again even at this speed Which is areu higher than average for sure in a fairy wood you’re still seeing I mean Max between your seven and three wood is going to be 20 Ys Max which is like still very close right closer than people would imagine so yeah make sure you get the right Club to fit the right Gap and the right window like we said for what what you want to do really yeah and I think you know one of the things when people come into EP for fear would fits I think one of the key questions that we discuss and we ask them and we discuss the you know is what are you really using your Fairway words for like if you’re predominantly using your Fairways as an off the tea Club then we can fit to that you know we can look at that delivery we can optimize to that if you’re someone who’s going to be hitting into greens then we can optimize for that if you want some if you actually want to do both you want a bit of Versatility we can fit to that but ultimately like you know you you kind of need to have an idea I think to some extent what you want your fair rewards to do they’re that part of the bag where in my opinion every Club in the bag should have a job if it doesn’t have a job if you just put a three-word in there because you got an extra place for a club and you thought I’ll just put a three word in there and it’s got no job to me that’s kind of like a wasted Club really you better off just either not having one or having a gap for something else that could have a specific job so I think we really want clubs at this end of the bag that fit a job they hit a ball flight you want maybe maybe you suit it to the courses you play but you should really be trying to dial that in yeah and I think it comes back to Old School mentality where a lot of people just go well I have a three-w so well why do you have a three why a fivewood three-wood you know it’s like why CU it’s a three-wood and you need a three-wood right no not not really you know so yeah absolutely right yeah delving into that asking those questions you know having a good discussion with your fitter I think that’s so key so again the message as always is you need to get fit absolutely you need to understand what it is that you’re buying and why you’re buying it if you’re if you’re going to invest in a new club um so hopefully this data today will help you make that decision and it will certainly give you a bit of information and a bit of data to be able to uh sort of consume and hopefully understand a little bit more about this end of the bag so well done Ross great great hitting mate thanks mate all right how far is that green so we’re gonna have a little bit of fun now so Ross uh set himself a challenge and he wants to try and no Donuts no Donuts on play here to be yeah this is this is a 20 donut challenge right so he’s going to try and hit the green which is currently at 293 two7 well it’s 274 front edge yeah so you got your three-wood I’ve got the three-wood not my three I never ever game Freewood got the Freewood he got the Freewood from the test um GT2 and he’s going to try and knock it on this green I think we give him three tries if he doesn’t do it in three tries I’m going home three goes yeah three goes right goes trying it a bit of a big Slinger okay oh too much that’s too much a Slinger that would have been good if I didn’t move the line yeah that would definitely too much of a Slinger should have kept it where it was oh I tell you what that’s dead straight I did it too straight necked it a bit as well yeah that one hasn’t got quite got the juice either is it you might be getting front edge might get front edge You’ be getting front edge with that one yeah got one more try it I’m being brutal one more try I tell you what that is oh we’ve had the CH go everywhere that’s how hard it knocked all the sh that’s actually going to be close get up no don’t get up what am I talking about oh no yes no get down there look at that 10 ft am I buying the donuts again you absolutely are look at that God oh that’s a great shot to be fair mate well done 290 and you did do it in three tries and it was on the third try you under pressure to a good shot there mate fair play 12 fre from 293 we’ll take it so there we go hope you enjoyed the video I hope you learned a thing or two and as always we’re just trying to kind of get you thinking a little bit more about your bag setup and push you towards coming to Someone Like Us and get fitted and get it checked out properly because you don’t know until you do that today we’ll be using a very neutral delivery neutral face neutral path neutral angle of attack if you’ve got a delivery that’s massively in to out massively out to in like it will change the characteristics of the bull flight so much this is kind of giving you a bit of an idea and maybe just making you think a little bit more about the bag set but as always please do go and get fitted but as always thank you so much for watching we hope you enjoyed it if you did please smash that subscribe button we’re really trying hard to grow we need your support to do so so thank you in advance and yeah hopefully you’ll stay tuned and hopefully I’ll see you in the next one

  1. Thanks for the interesting information gents, but I’m sorry to tell you that you’ve got the swing speed part of it wrong.
For example , if the average player swings their 3 wood at 90 mph then as the other clubs being tested increase in loft, they also decrease in shaft length, which affects (slows down) the swing speed.
While the gentleman who hit the shots for your video, did a great job of maintaining a constant swing speed for each section of the test (80, 90 and 100 mph), the actual reality of the swing speed would be significantly different for most if not all golfers who start with a base speed with their driver and then lose a couple of miles per hour for each increase in loft and decrease in shaft length..

As an example (that I looked up) someone who swings the driver at 100 mph would swing their 7 iron around 80 to 85 mph

  2. This prompted me to try a 7w and 9w yesterday and I was blown away with how easy the 7w was to use. I can't hit a 3w to save my life so I figured the 7w was going to be similar but I swear it is a cheat club. Descent angle at around 47* (for me) blew my mind.

  3. You stary with the 3-wood angle and a high angle, and put 2 or 3 spaced angles between. I start with a TightLies 15 and have a high of 29, with 2 in 14 degrees between. Then I can swing harder and easier to get distances starting at about 150. Add a 7 and 9 iron for inside that, a putter. The TightLies is my travel driver because it fits in a car width, I don't play a lot or hit big or even try to hit big because I would just be throwing my ball into the woods. Got a Playit Again driver that broke, it had an undersized misfit reshaft, I will reshaft it to the TightLies length so I can bring a driver.

  4. I have Titleist GT Fairways in 3,4,5,7, took the 3 and 5 out of the bag, my 4 wood is so close to both of them.

  5. So basically if you have an 80 mph swing you should just use woods to get enough height and spin through the bag until you get to wedges

  6. I feel hybrid 5 or 6 (after trying woods) – easier to hit from fairway and tee box. 80 mph golfer. Hybrid is more forgiving. I use super soft balls – get more distances. Thanks.

  7. Excellent video gents! Provided me a lot of insight as a 90 mph swinger. Only non traditional thing I do with my bag is hit stiff shafts instead of regular because of how I swing.

  8. So basically I’m in the lower speed category due to back problems and age. Still can play half decent off 10.5 index. I have a five wood 7 & 9 so basically I’m finding that the 9 wood 24 Deg carries 170 yards at 16 deg height at 65 ft. This is with trackman. This is my best numbers according to trackman. Is there really any point in me keeping the 5 wood? I’m thinking not. The 7 could potentially roll out further however. What do you guys think? Clearly I have dumped the 4 & 5 Iron. I also have fairway wood at 27 Deg & 31 Deg. Fairways have been a game changer for me. No more huffing and puffing with long irons trying to create speed. 🤣

  9. This comment may not be seen now as video is old but I have a 5 wood that goes 215-225 that cost me quite a lot and then I have a 4 hybrid 22 old M6 that goes 200-110 and a 3 wood that goes 240
I also have a Ping I crossover that I have set lofted to hit about 200yrds that I swap round with the hybrid but not sure if really enjoy the club

Any ideas on if I was going to change and I’m stuck with the 5 wood as I will lose too much money due to the shaft fitted what I should do as my hybrid is looking old now and worn and also have a tendency to hook it I was thinking should I get another 4 hybrid or a 7 wood ?

  10. Best video online that I have seen showing the differences between different lofts and different swing speeds with fairway woods

  11. Im a 90mph guy and ditched the 3 wood for a 4 wood. Woulda been interesting to see if at that speed you carry the 4 further than the 3 👀

  12. Interesting test for lower ss players. Lower SS players need as much launch, spin and ball speed as they can get from a combination of deep and low CG, high loft, springy face and light weight.

The only flaw I see is that a person that swings their 43" 3W 80mph won't swing their shorter 42" 5w, 41.5" 7w or 41" 9w. Doing the test using the 5w shaft in all 4 clubs would be a bit more telling. Or choking down the longer clubs.

An 80mph SS player might find some utility in putting a 3w or 5w shaft in a 7w head. Basically what Callaway did with the heavenwood.

  13. The thing that gets me with all these videos is how slow the 80mph swing looks – and the distance Ross gets with it !! I have no idea what my speed is but I don’t get anything like the distances – I must either be really slow or never make contact well???

  14. Great video. Have you also produced a similar video but with hybrids off the deck? If not, I would love to see something like that. I struggle with fairway woods due purely to visuals (trying to hit a flying saucer off the ground). I love the look of an iron or smaller shaped hybrids/driving hybrids like the DHY. Thank you!

  15. Great testing content. I finally went for a fitting and replaced my 2004 driver and 3 wood with a new driver and a 5 wood. I didn’t try a 7 or 9 wood but will look to try them. After that I go to a 5H.

  16. Now fairway woods (metals) are all the rage.e. Everything old circles around to “new”. Been playing Callaway BB B21 fairway woods ( metals) for 6+ years. 5w-9w. Love them. Gave up driver when I went to the woods and just this year I went to hybrid irons. I realize most of these videos are for younger and middle aged golfers, but I wish more videos were directed at mid- high handicappers with slower swing speeds. My days of 80 mph swing speeds are over.

  17. Great video. Very good analysis. Nice to see fairway woods coming back and I agree. I got rid of my 3w because I hit 5w just as good from the tee and on a long Par5 I can hit my 2nd shot from the fairway better with the 5w than the 3w. I can use my 7w or 9w for longer fairway or 1st cut play and often use my 9w from the tee on Par 3s. I have found my swing speeds getting slow so I play from the forward tees and depend on my woods ( metals) a lot from off the tee and longer fairway shots. Went to hybrid irons and really mostly use 9i, PW, GW (sometimes) and then into my 54* or 58*. I have practiced my bump & runs a lot and use that a lot unless I have an obstacle in my path or the course is wet or muddy. I,m toying with the idea of turning my Callaway 1.5 Mini driver into a shorter shafted club using 13* loft setting and making it a poor man’s 2w. Stop laughing, it works for my game.

  18. I have a low-90s driver swing speed and the 80mph data for 5W and 9W is bang on to what I hit a 20* wood and 22* hybrid off the tee. Very helpful to know I've got my gaps covered well between the big stick and irons.

  19. Love this video as a high handicapper and now as I’m 56 so my swing has slowed so really thinking that Driver, 7 wood and 9 wood would be very beneficial for my game. This allows me to take out the 4/5 and possibly 6 irons that I struggle to land on or near greens. Maybe a fitting with yourselves would be good to see what make and shaft combo would be best for me 🤔🤔🤔

  20. I've watched this video multiple time. What an eye opener that everyone should pay attention to when setting up their next bag 👍

  21. Interesting video again guys, enjoyed the comparison. The only thing I’m questioning is that the speed for these clubs would unlikely be the same when someone is swinging 100%, shaft length would have an impact so we’d lose a couple of MPH per club meaning the numbers aren’t quite what you’d expect to see out of a player that swing 100mph on 3 wood.

  22. Senior (74) mid handicap with slow swing speed. Currently using 7 and 9 wood. With approximately 80mph SS my results are consistent with what your showing. At that speed it seems it is not worth investing in a 5 wood or 3 wood as there is little difference in the gap. Not enough to justify the cost of anther club. Helpful video for me. Thanks.

  23. Very interesting video. Thank You for showing the results at 3 swing speeds. I am at 80 – 85 on a good day. Looking for a new fairway wood at the moment. So great to get a better understanding of what to expect at my swing speed 🙂

  24. Why did you make the comment…."if you're someone with a draw shape…maybe the 3-wood/5-wood are not good options"?….are you suggesting irons would make more sense? love the video!

  25. Well done! I've played 45+ years and it's interesting to see the re-emergence of higher woods that used to be considered "ladies clubs" back in the 80s when real men played 2 irons and might not even have a wood below 3W in the bag. Just fitted in low 90s swing speed for G440 LST driver and Max 4W and 7W plus a hybrid to span what was my 4I/5I (or even a 9W) distance. The ability for the 440s to forgive off-center hits and to land the 4W/7W into greens softly AND at longer distance than my old 3W is just amazing! Your conclusion about 5W being generally redundant to 7W was also spot on in my fitting.

  26. Tsi2 4 wood lofted to 18 tensei 1k black 75x 93 club speed 227 carry 237 total. Lighter shaft does not help my speed and the xshaft gives me a tighter dispersion.

  27. Great demo. I carry a 4 wood, 7 wood and 9 wood in my set that I was fitted for me. My swing speed is in the 70 range. What do you think?
