He came back with three pars, three bogeys, two doubles and a closing birdie for 41 to win by two shots from Thomas Bertaux, who was out and back in two over par, with a birdie at the 18th, for 74, net 67.

John Shiel birdied the 13th for a level-par back nine and totals of 75, net 69, to take third place in a field of 68 on countback from Steve Robson (h+1), 68, net 69.

Robson covered the front nine in three under par, with birdies at the 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th, and was one over on the back nine.

“I’m really happy and I know I shouldn’t be disappointed, but I had three sixes and a seven on the card so it could have been a stupid score,” Forrester said.

“I won a Midweek Stableford back in July, but this is my first big one. It’s my best round ever and I’ve got my name on an honours board, I can give up golf now!”

Terry Hancock belied his age to score 39 points for his second win in two months in the Men’s Midweek Stableford at the age of 86.

Hancock (h18) scored eight points from the first five holes after a double bogey on the 1st and a no score on the 5th, which cost him the chance to beat his age.

But he bogeyed the 6th and made three successive pars from the 7th to reach the turn with 19 and was seven over par on the back nine, with three, three-points pars for 23 to win by two from Gary Fisher in a field of 49.

Fisher (h25) failed to score on the 7th and 11th but still amassed 18 out and 19 back for second on countback from Henry Mason (h18), who birdied the 5th in an outward haul of 21 points, but blew out on the 10th for 16 back.

Clare Mills overcame her dislike of fairway mats to notch her ninth win in all competitions at Canterbury this year, scoring 31 points for victory by one from Di Florence in Saturday’s Women’s Weekend November Stableford.

The competition was reduced to 17 holes after motorbike vandals tore up the 5th green on Friday night and partially damaged the 14th green, which remained open for play.

Mills covered her front eight in seven over par for 16 points and had 15 coming back from two pars, four bogeys, two doubles and a no score on the 12th.

Florence birdied the 8th for four points in a total of 30 to take second place by one from Mills’ playing partners, Fran Fearn and fourth-placed Lizza Berry.

Kingston double bogeyed the 4th but recovered with birdies on the 7th and 8th for an outward 20 and came back with five pars, three bogeys and a double at the 15th for 17.
