The BEST IRONS In Golf – For EVERY GOLFER!

2025 has been some year for iron releases, but just what are the best irons for every category of golfer. Today we’re here at SGT with Lawrence. How you doing, mate? Great, mate. How are you? See you, Lawrence. I absolutely love coming here. This for me is the best fitting center in the world. I know you do have lots of fitting centers up in Scotland and of course some in Europe. Yeah. But you’ve fitted hundreds if not thousands of sets of irons this year. How many how many do you think you’ve fitted? Well, across the business, we’re well into well over a thousand well over a thousand sets of irons. So, today we’re going to discuss what we think is the best set of irons for all different types of golfer. We’re going to look at different models, different brands, different setups. But one of the things that I absolutely love about this fitting center, if you’ve not seen videos from here before, we have four iron, we have six iron, we have eight iron, we have wedge. So, if you want to come for a fitting here at SGT, it’s not just a case of let’s chuck a shaft in a six iron and go for it. Let’s actually get a proper fitting in and see what we can get. So when I came and got fitted here, we actually fitted different shafts in the long irons to the short irons and different heads because we wanted those ball flights to do different things. So that’s really imperative before we even get started, isn’t it? Yeah. Like for us, it’s, you know, there there’s different aspects of it, but what we’re always trying to find is the function of the golf club, trying to make sure it suits and fits and works for that golfer. Like with you, we put something a little bit lighter to make that longer iron easier because you still want to play a long iron. Loads of golfers still want to play that longer iron. So why not encourage that if that’s what they want? but also make sure it actually works. There’s no point just buying for a wedge for the sake of it if the 4 iron is never going to work for you. So just adapting it either through maybe something lighter or a graphite or maybe a different model, but there’s there’s lots of ways we can make it work for you. Um Right. Right. So the best irons of the year. We’re going to discuss the best hollow bodied iron, which is a really really interesting category. We’re going to discuss the best forged players iron which I know you think you guys are going to love what Lawrence is going to bring to the table here with the best forge iron because it’s a really really interesting one. Then we’re going to talk best kind of forgiving forgiving mid handicap kind of iron but we’re also going to have best obscure iron that nobody probably has ever heard of but loads of people will have heard of because you’re all massive golf fans like I am. Yeah. Proper golf. Do you want to lead us off on to to what you want to start with? I think it’s really hard to you know hollow body. It’s a it’s a product of the moment but I think You can’t go away from what this brings to the table. I think the P790, the speed slot through the long irons as a product this year, it has been a phenomenal thing. There are some new hollow body products out there that are doing some really, really good stuff, but I think you can’t really move away from that too far. It’s such a good allround product. Good players like the look of it. It’s clean. It’s sleek. It addresses the ball well. Not too much offset. It’s quick. And there’s the seven. Have you fitted many 770 short iron, 790 long iron? And and I think the addition of of how they look now, I think they blend really well. The lofts aren’t too strong. They work really really well as a sort of one and the other. Tailor made have been doing this for that long. I think they’re learning time after time to make them incrementally better. Yeah. Very similar to F1 cars, very similar to anything that you could say if it’s not if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But realistically, I think they’re just making them that little bit better feeling sounding, which was a big problem with the first P790s. They felt like crap, and you got the occasional flyer. Whereas now, they’re really starting to make them feel nice. Rain in those flyers a little bit because of the hollow body tech and go. They’ve just learned from from previous iterations, right? They’re more consistent in their distance control acoustically. They just sound so much better than what they used to, especially in those first couple of generations. But can I hit some? Yeah, cool. Right. So, when it comes to shafts, there’s lots and lots of different shafts that you can obviously get fitted for in your irons. Here at SGT, they have like literally everything. We’re going to go in the LA Golf because that’s what you fitted me for. Yeah, I I love the LA Golf. I think it’s absolutely fantastic. You can see again, look like all different length shafts because you’re going to get fitted wedge 864. So, a really really nice arsenal. One thing I’d like to give a nod of the cap to or one club I’d like to give another of the cap to because it could quite easily have been in this section is the T250 because it’s literally like I think title list have redefined what they’re doing with hollow body diamonds because the previous ones I don’t think were very good whereas now they’ve really come to the party with the T-150 and T250. Yeah, definitely. And you know, if you’re going to say that, I think the T250 Star at a 31 degree sixiron is a superb addition to to the golf range. I think more manufacturers need to look at this loft situation and put some more loft on some of the golf clubs that for for us in such a short time frame has been really really good. So many golfers struggle with gaining peak height and land angle. That’s been a great hollow body product. You don’t see as many golfers say, I want to hit it lower anymore, do you? Everyone wants to get the ball up in the air because it essentially makes the game a little bit. Yeah, we’re all starting to realize that good golf lives with the ball stopping where it where it lands. But let’s see the P790, shall we? I absolutely love the P790, especially in in this setup. And one of the things which I think Tailor Made have done really well is help manage those spin rates as well. So, we’re not necessarily going to get like 6,000 spin like you might get in a bladed iron, but you’re going to get something much more controllable and of course manageable. And at least it’s always consistent with it as well. Straight off the bat, that felt absolutely fantastic. Look at that. 180 carry. Bang on the nose. Exactly where I would want a sixiron. What are your thoughts on blending the sets then, Lawrence? Because I know we mentioned earlier about 770, 790. I think so many golfers could do really, really well in a five. I’m not going to say four because I think if using 790s, maybe some kind of hybrid fee, four iron would be beneficial. But five, six, seven in these and then 8 n wedge in 770 would be a good shout. Definitely. It’s all all player dependent as well, right? What you’re trying to achieve with each individual golf club. But I think what you’ve described there is is Bob on, right? The player who’s playing the P790 probably doesn’t want that sort of four iron option. They’re probably looking at a hybrid and maybe want to take a little bit of the heat out of the short clubs. Yeah. So 770 would work really well. And again, just weakening those off a little bit would subtle down that that offset profile. It would make them match in better with the 770s, like a 790 star. Yeah, you’d love that, wouldn’t you? I would love that. That would be great. So, next up, we’re going to talk forged players iron because I feel like this is a category that’s wide open. I think Titus have smashed it with the T-150. I think there’s lots and lots of different to be honest I’m I’m a bit I feel like ping could be in this category but I don’t know where because I feel like they’re almost at sixes and sevens with the amount of clubs they’ve got out at the moment ping and irons the driver range is phenomenal but I don’t know where the irons sit within the ping like if I look down here at them you can see we’ve got i530 we’ve got blueprint s we’ve also got blueprint t down here but the even the i240s really really good range but almost a bit too much as to where do you Well, yeah. I think when we’re talking forge product in a player’s eye, I think there’s some really, really good stuff out there. But for me, I think it’s definitely between these two. The XForge very, very new and current. So, we’ve not tried it massively through fittings. Probably only had them for about a month, but the ZXI7 this year has been a phenomenal product. Feels great. Great through the turf, especially off the grass. Still tech in there as well with the tungsten weighting and a few other bits. Phenomenal product. How many people do you find who come for a fitting who are dead set on maybe I’m the big three brands but leave with a Shrixen’s or something like that just because of the performance element? Um I think everyone who tries it is always shocked like it feels great. It sounds beautiful. How it performs is always it bats well above its sort of brand name weight right. It really really does perform against everything else. And I think no one gives it enough credit for how forgiving it is as a product as well. It’s definitely, you know, well up there for me as one of the best irons of the year overall. So, okay, we’ll give that a hit. Oh, can’t wait. I don’t hit many Shrixens and I should do because we do test them. We have them on the channel. They’re a fantastic brand. And I feel like again, maybe do they have too many? We have i4, we have i7, we have i5. i5. There’s another one. I Is that it? That’s it. Just the three heads at the moment. Oh, you got the Z Forge as well. The blade. Yeah. But looking down at it, this looks absolutely fantastic. A lovely blade length and not too much offset either. So, a great product to blend with the ZX i5 as well. Yeah, certainly a softer feeling product than the hollow body that we’ve just tested. And like looking at numbers here for this, I would anticipate a little bit shorter, but I would hope for more consistency. Yeah. So you see the spin’s gone up, carry a little bit shorter, peak height’s higher, land angle’s a little bit steeper as well. Yeah. So overall, it’s done it as you’d expect it to do. A, it’s a little bit weaker in loft than the P790 is standard, but the profile of head is also built to do more of that flight. So it’s doing exactly what you want it to do. And one of the things that we could say about the hollow body market as a whole is that element of consistency. Yes, you’re gonna get, but it’s still not going to be as consistent as a pure fjord. Pure fjords. Absolutely not. No. And I think what good players are always looking for or players who like to play a forge product is they want to see if you are going to miss it, you want to know that that miss that you feel in the head actually happens. Whereas sometimes I think with sort of these game improvement bigger cavity back products where you miss it out the toe, it’s still gone. And actually sometimes that’s not good for your golf. Yeah. You hit it too far offline. You hit it too far into the rubbish. Whereas if you have that sort of dead profile off the face, it can be more beneficial for some golfers. So I would hope there for around another 175. Yeah, at 122 ball speed probably bob on. Right. Yeah. 180. I like this as well. It doesn’t overly spin as a head. I found the friction range this year not be a massive spinner. So really, really good. Right. Very good. Right. So we’ve talked for we’ve talked forge. We’ve talked hollow bodied. What about a game improver? Game improver. It’s It’s a tricky one. The game improver. I think there’s there sort of different categories within that is because you could have 790 in there quite easily. Yeah. And T250. You’ve got sort of like your hot metals. Um your AIS from Callaway, your Cobras have got some really good ones as well. I think for me like a really really good one. Um, I really like the loft of the Hot Metal um, high launches this year. Again, nice big easy forgiving product just with that little bit more loft. Um, I think some of the best irons of the year are these ones. I think JKX Forged that it was a stroke of genius putting them in that black finish. I think they look so good and perform really really well as well. They don’t because you look at them and you think, “Oh, they’re going to be really big and cumbersome and and and forgiving, but actually they look quite sleek down at the ball.” So, if you’re looking for a sleek looking iron that still performs with forgiveness, it could quite easily be them. And I think what what they’ve done really well here and they’ve transcended it through the sort of Sline as well is this sort of three-stage sole. Yeah. Um, so you’ve got that pre-worn leading edge and then that heavy tapering off the back. So, it gets in and out the turf really, really well. Um, let’s hit this one, shall we? Yeah. Loads of tech in the head, right? Lots of forgiveness, really, really clean. And like you said, that black finish on that is incredible feel and sound as well. I think if we were going to go pure forgiveness, I think you are right with the Hotmail HL. Yeah. But I feel like as an as an all round golf club, you get like the best of of all worlds here. You get that element of forgiveness, you get that element of feel, you also look fantastic in the bag. So I think Mizuno Mizuno had a bit of a a strange period, didn’t they? Where I thought they didn’t know if they were coming or going a little bit with the irons. There was too many out again. But maybe now they’re starting to progress on to a set of clubs that yes, there’s something out there for everyone, but really you being pushed towards the JPX rather than S3, for example. Yeah, I think it’s it’s starting to get a lot cleaner now. And I think the Pro range is is very much a core product for them and does really really well. But the JPX is has really started to come come into its own sort of profile. It’s really and I really do think that Hot Metal HL is such a good iron for what it is. So again, here we’re talking nearly 5,000 spin, 180 carry, 190 tow. So it’s they’re good numbers, aren’t they? They’re very, very consistent. I think if you’re looking for that pace and speed off the face like the P790, maybe not quite as fast, but you want that sort of softer feel and sound with a little bit more spin retention, this is a great product. It sort of sits in between that P790 and the ZX i7. So, I’d hope there for another kind of one between 175 180, we’ve got three shots pretty much identical, haven’t we? Yeah, you’re front to back on that. So, almost nothing. Yeah. Brilliant. Right. So, what’s the obscure one? We’ve got some fantastic clubs here, some big names. Where can we go where people maybe haven’t thought too much about? I think if you’re looking, do you get many Sorry to interrupt. Do you get many people who come in going, I just want something different? I don’t want what Brighton’s got. Yeah. I mean, a lot of guys come in and say, I’m completely open, right? You just guide me and tell me what is going to work best for my golf. And I think that’s always a good way to approach a fitting. There’s also that aspect of if there is something that you really aesthetically look well love the look of, let’s make it work its best. But I think for me, if you’re looking at your best overall slightly unique product, I think I’m going to go TC 202. Okay. from Europe. Um, for me, if you’re looking for something that’s playable, has an unbelievable feel, it has some tech in there as well with the with the craftsmanship through the forging in the back. The sole is amazing through the turf as an all round unique golf club that is standalone for me. And I’m I’m new to the Mura arrangement. I’ve not done much mura testing like most people don’t to be fair. But look at some of these here. Like look at that. That is very forgiving for a blade. They even offer their the sort of they have their own hollow bodiodied option as well. Yeah. Like really really really good product. Um it’s always tough like you you have this you have your Epons by Endo. Um we also carry the Proto concept as well with like we’ve got some really good Japanese products here. Yeah. But for me I think that is an unbelievable option. Right. Are we what we’re talking distance-wise? Is this going to go a little bit less? Are we talking maybe 175 average instead of 180 for the six or? Um, yeah, I reckon we’re probably going to lose half a club, maybe a full one just because of the loft on it as well. But be interesting because you’ve probably not hit many if any muras before the feel of this. Oh my lord. But yet the ball speed’s still one two, right? So that’s quite similar to where we were with the stricken, but feelwise, spin and everything, that’ll be very different. Like as a ball, I’m expecting to hit that 175. I’ve hit it 176. And as a ball flight, like there’s not much more I want from a sixiron. It’s launching nice. It’s just fading back. Lovely. We’ve got 57 spin. I like what you’ve done there because your land angle first time in a few well most of the day is a little bit over 45 degrees. So there’s lots of stopping power through the trajectory. Yeah. Right. As a as golfers, we it’s easier to hit it lower than it is to get the ball up in the air. So let’s get the club to get it up. Little bit towy. So we might lose a bit of ball speed on that one. Well, that’s interesting, right? A little bit towy. And this is what I said. Deceptively forgiving 119 ball. Still 171. Yeah, that’s remarkable. And still maintained good spin, touching 45 land, 85 ft. And then I feel like with these I bet I can move that back in the stance and just play a bit more of a you can play it as it’s proper playing golf club. Yeah, that’s absolutely open my eyes a little bit as to look at look at different brands I think. But I think so guys on sorry you No, I I just think people need to be quite open to different stuff like this. the Mura range, Epon, Proto, anything like that is is unique and yes, they do come at more of a premium price point, but if you have your product fitted for you properly, it’s going to last in the bag a long time. Yeah. And they’re going to give you, like you said, that feels so different to anything you probably hit today. Yeah. That’s um I’ve really really enjoy come back for a fitting on these actually. Guys, if you’ve enjoyed that, smash that subscribe button below. If you want to book in the guys at SGT, the link is below. Lawrence, thank you very much for your time. Really, really good. Guys, we’ll see you all at the same time tomorrow. Byebye.

  1. James, I get a little confused. I understand you loved the TaylorMade P790’s, then why don’t you play them? Why don’t you put those in the bag instead of the Takomo irons?

  2. Strong impression of a golfer expressing preferences, and the fitter trying to agree with the golfer to create a happy buyer.

  3. If you want a stunning looking, wonderful feeling, forged club with forgiveness and playability that is on the rare side of the spectrum, Orka RS10 CB’s! All the Orka clubs are super but I was fitted for the CB’s after over 30 years as a Ping player BEST leap of faith ever!

  4. Something that I have thought about but never done, as I don’t have the luxury of being able to try/use a multitude of brands, is not only a blend of the same manufacturer but a blend of all clubs. It was mentioned early on that TM do the best hollow body but the Titleist 6 iron is great. What would a bag of all lofts look like? A couple of pings a TM and a Titleist amongst Mizuno’s and Wilsons. We buy the full set because of cost and not having somewhere to try every iron from every manufacturer. A little word on buying second hand there as well. The early P790’s are pants, so which ones do you buy from the second hand market?

  5. I watch all these videos of new irons and think yeah the p790 looks cool i might get some but then my current irons the callaway cf19 forged perform so well and i actually preferred the feel compared to the 2024 p790's. So i feel like im stuck with this urge i can't fulfill. 😂

  6. Srixon zxi 5s forged & Wilson dynapower forged irons are the best irons of 2025 😊 &suit all golfers & are overlooked

  7. The JDM world is definitely a place to find unique forged irons but the Miura one piece forged irons are not worth $350 each USD to most golfers when Srixon, Mizuno and many others are 50-70% less per club.

  8. Always enjoy your content James, and particularly like the video from the Asian golf supermarket!

However, did bring a wry smile when you guys were discussing the work TM have done on consistency and fliers etc. then you proceed to hit three shots with the 6 iron with the carry distances of 180, 169 and 191 yards 😂
