“The Faial golf course will not affect any infrastructure; it will be built in the riverside area, which is a non-building zone, but it is an area with great potential for the development of a high-quality course,” said Miguel Albuquerque, in statements to journalists.

The official added that this area will be used to build “a course with an excellent climate” and with “multiplier effects in terms of qualified employment, new residents and economic dynamism” for the municipality of Santana.

Miguel Albuquerque said, however, that there are still no defined deadlines for this project.

Porto Santo

Regarding golf in Porto Santo, which already has one course, he highlighted that it is “strategic for breaking the island’s seasonality,” noting that a second structure will be built, the public tender for the first phase of which was launched on Monday, with a base value of 6.1 million euros.

“The golf course is justified because Porto Santo, without the golf course, would have no activity in the winter, and without activity, its economy would be killed,” he argued.

“Therefore, if there are so many complaints about the reduction of seasonality, one of the effects already empirically demonstrated is that the golf course is an anchor for the development of Porto Santo, whether people like it or not,” reinforced the president of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP).

Expansion

Currently, the archipelago has one golf course in Porto Santo and two in Madeira, and a new infrastructure for the practice of this sport is also being built in Ponta do Pargo, in the municipality of Calheta. Albuquerque indicated that the Santo da Serra golf course will be expanded, adding nine more holes, and the Palheiro Ferreiro course will also undergo improvements, especially in terms of irrigation, with support from European funds.

The governor also highlighted that “one of the most beautiful courses in Europe is nearing completion,” referring to the infrastructure at Ponta do Pargo, in the municipality of Calheta, which “will create a new central hub in the west of the island.”
